flames4eva
Is that a dream you had? a guess? or your dear friend Eklund again? In the form of a question I am questioning it EK is heck of a guy... didn't you know? Smokes can sign with anyone and it wouldn't bother me really. leafs_rock_go_mccabe
Is that a dream you had? a guess? or your dear friend Eklund again? Either way, true or not, it would be nice for Smolinski to get signed. It's been quite some time since free agency started and Smolinski has yet to find a home. I also have to reservations against playing him, either. Our forwards should hopefully know his defensive game and be able to handle him easily if he ends up in the East. johnny_canuck_21
IMO, it looks more and more like Smolinski's situation is similar to Mike Johnson's last year. He will probably not be signed before training camp, but will get an invite from someone.
GreekHockeyCoach
Given our present situation, Smokes might not be a bad acquisition at a reduced salary.

I think Smolinski was playing very poorly for most of last season. He did have one very good post-season round (against Boston), but since cap is not an issue for us right now, I think we would be fine over-spending on someone like Lang who we can ditch at the end of the coming season. Smolinski, whatever the cost, wouldn't provide us the services we need from a 3rd line center. I would rather give the role to Lapierre, and let Chipchura battle him for the ice time. Or, like I had mentioned, go get someone (whatever the cost) and let them leave at the end of next season when Chipchura has experienced some NHL seasoning! I'm not too convinced myself that it would be the right thing to do. I was just throwing the idea out there given the way he played in the playoffs. If he could play like that in the regular season, he wouldn't be bad at a reduced rate. However, like you point out, Laps and Chips could benefit from being put in that role.
