One thing though, we're way too young now. I think Smokes will at least give us some veteran presence. I'd rather see him on our 3rd or 4th line then Begin.

I'd rather have Begin who gives it his all every shift than someone that just floats around.

i hope its not me, i have been in some smolinski trouble before :( but seriously FACT: he is a nomad, he has been travelling around from team to team his whole career, he is getting up there in age, so he should just see what he has left to give and give it his all.

Really? I'd take Begin any day over Smolinski and his -8, which is second-worst on the team overall and very disturbing for someone who is supposed to be a defensive checker.

I have nothing against Smoke, but he has been a major disappointment to me this year and younger guys like Chipchura are already ahead of him in my mind. He had better elevate his play once he returns to the lineup or he could find himself in the AHL next season because no NHL team has an interest.

Not saying I don't like Smoke, because I do. I think he's a very classy player and has had a very established NHL career, but I don't want to see him come back.

He hasn't been all that outstanding since we got him, I honestly can't think of anything he brings to the team besides expierence, and we have quite a few with expierence out there.

He's a Hab right now, so I support him through and through and I hope he can find a home in where he's needed and can make an impact, I just don't see how that fits in with the Canadiens right now.

With Lapierre out there we have youth, energy, a solid faceoff man, and a kid who's throwing it all on the line for the team right now, he's really fighting for a spot.

With Smoke we have an aged player, who's never had a solid team (more or less a floater), he's unable to create energy, possibly becuase of his age and he's not out there throwing it all on the line.

He does have some uses. Hes a right handed shot and he seemed to help the team score in 5 on 3 situations which was something they struggled with a bit last season. I thought he started the season okay, but slowed down a lot when the team started to slump. He has been an offensive contributer in the past so hopefully he can center Higgens and Ryder effectively if that is where they are putting him.

Here's my two cents. Guys like Smoke and Breezer (the veterans) who have in some people's minds underachieved, just got the best wake up call possible with what's been happening as of late. Think about it, we're winning with 20 year olds because they're hungry for a spot. I for one expect Smokes to come back and work harder than ever before to prove that he belongs, as will the other veterans because no one wants to be outplayed by rookies. This is the best thing that could have happened to this team and our veterans.

I'm with you on this. I think they will come back with a little more drive than they were displaying when then went out.

I still say they should sit out until we hit a rough patch with the youngsters

I heard this on team990 this morning. Seems Smoke said yesterday after practice that he is ready to go on Saturday, but Carbo said he is still a couple of weeks away  . Is this the Habs way of sticking to the youngsters in the lineup? Take it for what it is worth.

i don't see what carbo could possibly know that a team doctor doesn't. If smoke is cleared to go, that means he can play to the best of his abilities. If carbo won't ice him, it means the best of his abilities are not needed here.

HabsInside/Out also has the same story.

"Smolinski says he's ready, but Carbo indicated the veteran would remain on the shelf for two to four weeks."

In hindsight, it's too bad Gainey signed Smolinski to a contract. I don't have any huge problems with Smolinski, but he's been outplayed by both Chipchura AND Lapierre, in my opinion. How he comes back and gets ice time again is anybody's guess, but I certainly hope it's not at the team's expense. Hopefully the veteran understands his role on the team, and can maintain his composure if he stays in the pressbox for awhile.

Difficult to predict that in July though... I think that the Smolinski signing was normal at that time, to replace Bonk. He did have a decent season last year. Off course, hindsight is 20-20.

Look, I was a big supporter of the Smolinski signing to replace Bonk (though I would have preferred keeping Bonk, frankly). I thought he'd add experience, defensive responsibility, faceoff skill, and two-way scoring down the middle -- who could argue with that? This year, however, he's just underperformed, and to make matters worse, kids like Chipchura and Lapierre are outplaying him. Thankfully, it's only a one-year contract. For his own sake, I hope he elevates his play in the second half, because he won't command much on the UFA market with a season like this.

Kind of a off topic question. Seeing how he has been injured for such a long time, i was wondering if his pay for all the games he has missed sill count toward the cap? He is making a decent pay @ 2 million per season. Say he misses 10-15 games, does his salary come off of the cap we have spent this year. Im sort of wondering the same whenever a player is injured for a few games. Like Huet, Begin, Smolinki and so on?

I'm way out of my league when it comes to dicussing the CBA but I'm almost 100% sure that an injury doesn't void a contract unless explicitely specified, and therefore salaries still count towards the cap. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though. One thing I'm not sure of is if a player is injured for a really long time though (as in an entire season or more)....I'm not sure whether a team can place a player on long term IR and avoid his salary counting against the cap.
