In my opinion, Gainey only offered Higgins at the deadline because he had to. Many GMs inquired about him, and it would have taken nothing less than Higgy to score a star forward like Hossa or Sundin. Gainey was prepared to do that to have a strong Stanley Cup run. At this point, though, with UFAs and little to no trading involved in order to get them/their rights, there's no way Higgins is leaving. Unless Gainey sees a signed player he really really wants to trade for...
Correct. And that signed player (IMO) could only be a top 4 D-man; that's really the only piece missing. That piece of the puzzle may not be filled until the trade deadline. An experienced shut-down checking line centreman, particularly if good at face-offs, would be nice, but I think BG/Carbo are going to go with Lapierre -- he matured quite a bit in the past season.

Hes a die hard habs fan ... Hard to come by, smart kid. He will continue to improve over the years.....

We arent trading him anytime soon

Hope not. Good kid and a good player. And he wants to be a Hab. He and his father have been Hab fans, so for him to get traded would suck big time.

Big pro hockey is primarily a business. So might it be the other way around, clouds-wise? I mean, there's a reason why those 'pools' hockey fans play in and dream up are called "fantasy pools". ;)

Sometime between now and the trading deadline, I think it quite possible that Higgins will be going in a package to acquire a top 4 D-man to complete the Habs Cup-run roster. Acquiring Tanguay has really opened up that possibility. Pro hockey braintrusts, including Gainey, will not spend any time worrying about where Higgins might go ("whether his feelings will be hurt"), other than the usual "not to a another Cup contender". The Leafs won't be contending for the Cup anytime soon (well, ever? :D ).

Umpteen "unconfirmed" reports had Higgins as part of the package going to Atlanta for Hossa at the trade deadline, with Pittsburgh coming in and trumping Gainey with less than 10 minutes to go. With Tanguay on board, Higgins relative contribution value has just taken a hit. The Habs need a top D-man more at this point than they need Higgins as 3rd line left wing.

There were lots of reports stating that Atlanta wanted Higgins at the last minute but were declined which is what allowed Pittsburgh to win the battle for Hossa.

Yeah, maybe that's the way it was. The not-too-detailed story that was reported as reliable was that Montreal had a take-it-or-leave-it deal that Atlanta was going to (have to) accept until Pittsburgh came in with 10 minutes to go and offered "more". We know the Pittsburgh more; we don't know for sure what BG's offer was.

I seriously doubt higgins is going to be traded anytime soon. He is very young, He is on a very inexpensive contract. He has alot of heart, he can play the PK + scoring line + Defensive lines, he went to yale or some really smart school

Hes been a canadiens fan his whole life.

The kid has a lot going for him

Agree, but he was a die hard Habs' fan. Now he's a player, and you can't be both a player and a fan.

Two posts in a few hours to reinforce your point. You must be now a die hard Higgins' fan.

Higgins has received a lot of criticism for not being a goal scorer, even though he had 27 this past year. Now we have acquired Tanguay, and he is being praised immensely. Hopefully some of Higgins's critics will be fair this year, and realize that he contributes a lot to the team, both offensively and defensively.

A brief comparison shows:

Higgins - GP 82; G 27; A 25; Pts 52

Tanguay-GP 78; G 18; A 40; Pts 58

Good point. Here's hoping they both score 30+ goals this coming season! Higgy with another year experience, and Tanguay back with an offensive focus team, and I can see it.

You just listed a whole lot of reasons supporting why another NHL team might be willing to trade a valuable, experienced, expensive top D-man, in order to get their hands on such a great, young, inexpensive two-way forward. ;) For the Habs, at the specific time (such as trade deadline), it may all come down to which of the two they need more for the Cup-run.

That still doesn't justify the ridiculous amount of Venom spit at Higgins, despite as I stated, having very similar numbers to Andrei, Chris is still a darn good player last time I checked.

I don't see venom, I see simple frustration. When a player misses open net after open net, fans are going to get frustrated. He also wears the 'A', so more is expected of him night after night.

I like Higgins myself, and am hoping that this 08-09 season sees him become the scorer he wants to be. Playing on a line with Saku and probably Tanguay, I expect a 65-point season from him at least, and I don't feel that it's an unreasonable expectation.

You're comparing an average season by Chris to Tanguay's worst offensive season in the league. Tanguay isn't a huge goal scorer but he has shown throughout his career that he will consistently produce 70-80 pts. Higgins has not yet shown that. I really think Higgins is capable of more than he's shown us so far and I'm excited to see it.

Actually, Higgins's 52 points are a career high for him, not even average.

Comparing Tanguay and Higgins are we?

One thing that they have in common is that they're both frustrating to watch!

Higgins misses the net on so many "open net" oppurtunities, while Tanguay will pass the puck away even if he has an open net to shoot at!!

I have a few good friends who are Flames fans and they say that Tanguay is by far the most frustrating player that they've had to see play with the Flames in years. He has a bias towards passing the puck when he's in a great position to shoot. They also did say, though, that he is definitely good enough to be a top line left winger.

Were they frustrated the year he put up 81 points for them, despite not seeing any significant power-play time?

Perfect!! Carbo just needs to get them on the same line then! Tanguay will pass up an empty net to pass it over to Higgins, who will then shoot and miss the empty net himself! :D;)

Actually, I'm looking for both of them to do well this year. Easily can be the top three LW trio (with AK46) in the league. It'll be a treat!

I never said that they were frustrated with his production, or the results of his effort. I said he was just frustrating for them to watch because he seems to try and make the pass at times when he should just shoot!

I will say this though.

In the 06-07 season Tanguay piled up 81 points. He scored 21 points on the PP (ranked 3rd among Flames forwards that year), and his average time on the PP per game ranked 3rd among Flames forwards at 4:04 per game. Kovalev had an average of 4:09 PP time per game this year, leading forwards on the Habs. I would say that Tanguay had significant power play time that year.

Also in that season, he only took 107 shots. That's good for 11th on the team. His shot percentage, though was 20.6% (1st on the team).

When a guy has that shot percentage and doesn't take many shots, a fan has to be going insane when he gives up another great oppurtunity to shoot! He does have a good shot!

Tanguay himseld has admitted to overpassing here:
