If a player's attitude changes after one scratch, then he doesn't belong on this team, period. You are a pro, you take the good with the bad, the easy with the hard, you act with class and realize its not all about you. Brisebois took his scratch with class and made no fuss about it, I expect Begin will do the same.

I listened to the clip and he does sound upset but at the same time he isn't sulking.

"I'm going to work harder the next time I get in the lineup so he has no reason to bench me"

Next game he plays I expect to see the old Begin.

Is it Begin getting benched or Koivu? By the media's reaction and some fans, I can't tell the difference. Seriously though, Begin, Murray, Dandenault, Kostopoulos, Latendresse, Chipchura, at this stage in their career, they're all interchangeable, and if Lapierre is called up, he's also in the same boat. You have to expect at least 2 of them to be scratched every game! I like Steve as much as the guy next door, but he's not playing the way he was in past years, whether it's injuries (his back?) or age taking its toll. We need the spark plug back.

Bingo.

Well Begin is surprised he's benched and has no idea what he did wrong.

I just hope management doesn't pull a Rivet situation with him.

If we can get a first-round pick out of Steve Begin, I won't complain. ;)

In all seriousness though, I love Begin, and while I don't think he was playing poor enough to be benched, it's not the end of the world. No disrespect to him.

The biggest thing I noticed this year about Begin is that he isn't chipping the puck out of our end consistently. But you have to take into account he is adjusting to new line mates who don't play an overly aggressive game. At least last year while playing with Max & Lat's he knew that they were going to be aggressive and throw body checks like him. This year so far the fourth & third line have no real identity yet.

I agree. Begin is a good roleplayer, but he really isn't the type of guy you need to keep in the lineup. The constant need to keep mediocre players in our lineup I think was one of the factors that led to the team's demise last season. I'm glad to see Carbo willing to make decisions that some of our veterens may not like for the good of the team. Last season there was the Samsonov and Kovalev situations, but those were more complex - this is just scratching players who really don't justify a guaranteed lineup spot every night.

The thing with these players is that were the NHL not ovelry-watered down (I'm not talking extremem comparing to the original six days (that obviously isn't realistic now) - but even like 24 teams which is pretty reasonable for this league), most these guys would be career AHLers (not Latendresse or Chipchura since they are prospects not lifelong fourth liners).

I'm almost positive the reason behind it has nothing to with Begin's play, Carbo wants to give Murray a chance to play. So the question was does he do it against Florida, or OTTAWA? Begin will be playing against Ottawa you can count on that.

Right. Murray is still below every single player in our lineup in terms of depth, but Carbo wanted to get him in, and Begin both being a role player and playing a similar game to Murray made him the odd man out. This move does not mean Begin has been replaced by Murray permanently or anything, after this game Begin will be back in the lineup and Murray will spend another 3-4 games in the pressbox.

I think the problem here is the way it was done, Begin didn't seem happy with not being told, just coming and seeing it there this morning.

Begin, playing great or not, is a respected vet on this team, and I'm not sure if the guys will be thrilled with the way Carbo is handling this.

Also, weren't you one of Begin's biggest supporters this offseason? ;)

That's a good point too though. I have no problem with scratching Begin, but with a veteren player he probably should have been told ahead of time.

Begin or Murray.... doesn't matter. Both of them not NHL calibre with they way they are playing at the moment...

I happen to believe that they're both NHL caliber... but they're both filling the same role.

Is there a reason my last post in the Begin topic got deleted? maybe you deleted the wrong post?

anyways I bought the journal de montreal at lunchtime and Begin is NOT a happy camper. Would never believe we would be talking about a Begin/Carbo "thing" this early in the season. Begin says "I HAVE QUESTIONS..I BETTER GET ANSWERS". The least Carbo could have done was told him he wasn't playing.

Should Guy have taken him out for dinner and drinks the night before ?

Begin found out the way everyone finds out, and if he has questions, all he has to do is ask.

Guy said he would talk with him about it. "I better get answers ", well he better be prepared, he might just get them !!!

I'm amazed at how invisible Begin was tonight against the Sens considering he had just been benched last game.

I'm pretty much of the opinion the Habs could easily call Lapierre back up to take Begin's place, and it would be an improvement.

another game in which Begin gets a penalty in the dying minutes of the game.. Ife he is supposed to be the defensive responsible player, then i thiink the coach should reconsider playing begin late in games. He is way to spaztic with his stick (like souray was) and as a result he looks like he is slashing players all the time, and hence.. penalties - like the one against toronto last year (I will never forget, je me souviens).

Tiime for steevo to have a seat in th ebox and think about what he needs to do to stop getting penalties.

The penalty that he took might just as saved a goal, when he locked Malkin's stick (I think it was Malkin). Unfortunately, they scored anyway a bit later, but Begin did the right thing at the time. In the old NHL, locking the stick like he did would have been considered a great defensive play, great coverage. It doesn't fly today and that's fine, but it still beats letting the guy score in an open net.

Begin slashed Sidney Crosby's stick who WAS in position to score. Not a bad penalty... I know theres no such thing as a bad penalty but I just can't see how someone can blame Begin for almost losing the game? WE GOT OUR 2 points !!! We won back to back games asgaisnt the CANES and the PENS and you blame Begin for what already???
