Guest xe_liam88
http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app/?service...rticleid=341975 IMO he is worth every cent of his deal so far. He likes the city and has played better than he was expected to at the start of the season....I can officially say, "Souray who?" Because even when we had Souray we still were never 30% on the PP! The team looks better than it has in recent years...last year we looked good at the sart but you just had the feeling we were gunna drop sooner or later, not this year. qoutes like this: The guys had a pretty good laugh there just before it was time for me to shoot. What a bunch of jerks,” said Hamrlik with a smile, shaking his head. “That was my first penalty shot since I was a little kid. I wasn’t sure what to do. I tried to lift it over [Martin Biron’s] pad, but I couldn’t get it high enough.” and this: otta say, I’m really starting to like this guy,” smirked Christopher Higgins. “He’s been an awesome addition to our blue line. The guy is just so calm. When he’s out there I can’t help but take more chances offensively, it feels that good to have him back there.” make me happy, the team is really looking good right now! Future is too!
Guest xe_liam88
also, I have a feeling this guy will be grooming a Rookie next year, and I dont think it will be O'Byrne....Mcdonagh has been solid in Wisconsin this year...he could amke the jump after the season! jigger-1
I thought Hamrlik was our best defenseman last night. That hit on Brière to set the tone and draw a retaliation penalty was a 1000 game NHL veteran play. Huge in my opinion because he knew they would want to defend Brière at the slightest hit and also because he knew it would tell Brière that they're watching him. What did they say last night? 7 points in 6 games? Man was he solid overall. He is so much quicker and better in his own end than Souray. He makes us a much better team. fourtrax
I am continually impressed with his composure in the defensive zone, even when there's a forechecker right in his face. He doesn't overpass the puck or blindly fire it along the boards beyond the reach of his D partner. Usually, he'll make a smart, short pass right where it needs to be, allowing Brisebois to clear the zone. And those first passes out of the zone are just super. Guest FlHabsFan
The guys on defense have really picked it up over a year ago. Last year it was us on the wrong side of a 41-20 shot advantage. Having the Hammer on our side has definitly bolstered our D. And the other guys stepping up as well is helping us surprise lots of teams so far this year

Either we're used to the way Souray was kind of tentative in his own zone or Hamrlik is a master at it. I don't recall him making too many mistakes out there this year so far. He is really contributing to making our transition play absolutely lethal when we're skating. Those first passes from him, Markov and Komisarek are really helping our attack. Guest FlHabsFan
When you think of Souray, the first things that comes to mind is slap shot and enforcer role. With Hamrlik, its all about the defense.
Guest Memo Gonzales
His comment of other guys laughing at the bench before his slapshot made me laugh too. A great character and a great hockey player. I'm so happy that we have him under a long-time contract.
Guest WindsorHab#10
Hamrlik said after signing that he was very happy & honoured to be a Montreal Canadien. We as fans are very happy & honoured you're playing for the Habs. Keep it up and rake those Leafs tomorrow.
tmash
I thought that was a great game overall (although i missed some parts), although he got caught on the last goal, Huet should have had it. This guy has turned into exactly the type of defenseman we needed last season. He just solves so many problems of ours: - leadership / experience: we have a young team, and he brings experience and from the sounds of it is a good leader - size / physical play: Montreal isn't the most physical team, he brings a great physical dimension and has replaced Souray in that regard - offense from the back end: He is on pace for around 50 points or so, helps get hte puck into the other teams zone an doverall has been a solid boost offensively - defensive play: Brings solid defensive play which is really helpful - even strenght play: continues to be a + player, showing his contribution even strength When the signing was made I sort of questioned it. On the one hand, I knew we had to sign someone and was glad to get someone better than Souray even strength. But on the other hand, I though we were overpaying and wasn't sure if he'd really help or just be another one of those marginal guys. I don't question the singing now, because so far he has done everything we needed: offense, defense, even strength, special teams, and has been excellent in all situations. He's become our most complete defenseman, and if he keeps this up, I have no problem with his salary and can't think of a better signing last offseason. Guest smoke
That is one thing i am noticing more aswell, He doesnt mind hitting someone, and he seems to hit hard aswell. So we have 2 good bodycheckers out there, komi + him
hockey_gal89
I just want to say this about Roman Hamrlik: Daniel Briere be damned, Roman Hamrlik was a better free agent signing simply because he is a more complete veteran prescence on our back blue line. He provides a stability that only a former 1st rounder can provide. He blocks shots, plays physical, is solid positionally, etc... Montreal's defence was suspect last season...with the addition of Hamrlik, coupled with the keeping of Markov makes our defence one of the tougher ones to play against night in, night out. Guest Handlanger
By far our best D-Man.... outplayed Markov too if you ask me (less mistakes).

Guest habs_fan1160
I really like Hammer, he may not be the worlds greatest player offensivly but he's one hell of a d-man for us. He's solid out there, he's calm and he seems to read the plays very well. Plus I like his attitude. It's nice to know a player is loving Montreal and really wants to be there. Hammer is a class act player and although he may not have super star status, he's been good for us this season.
fourtrax
When we signed Hamrlik, I was happy even though I thought he was very much overpaid. Today, I still think he's overpaid, but in the sense that all d-men of a certain calibre get overpaid because what they bring to the table is coveted by all teams. Right now, I have absolutely no problem with Hamrlik's salary, because he has given this team something it hasn't had in years: rock-solid defensive responsibility, puck movement, and point production on the second pairing, all from one guy. I absolutely agree. I have missed only one game so far (despite living in Germany) and Roman has been one of our best players so far in my point of view. Guest Hab
Hamrlik has been our best free agent signing since...well, I'm not very old, so I can't remember a signing that's been as successful(so far) as this one has. Keep on truckin' Roman!
Guest St. B. Voyageur
There's a reason this guy was drafted 1st overall (ahead of Yashin ). Everything he has brought to the team is positive. We really have a good defence this year guys (from 1-6). With Markov-Hamrlik-Komisarek playing so well, it is no coincidence the team is rolling too. He and Brisebois are a considerable improvement over Souray-Rivet, although I think there are many who wouldn't have predicted this at the beginning of the season (what a difference good passing makes!) 4 years of him and Markov is definitely something to look forward to. Guest habs_fan1160
The difference IMO is that with Souray he claimed super star status in the NHL, he was heard of a lot and a popular player throughout the NHL - he still is. With Hammer, he doesn't have super star status and he's not talked about a lot, nor is he very popular, but he's one heck of a player. Souray gave us a bit of an offensive boost, but lacked on the D. Hammer doesn't give us much of an offensive boost but is smart on the D. They're really opposite players, but like I've said before, leave the scoring to the goal scorers and the defending to the defenseman. If they can net a few, that's great. But I'd rather have guys on our D who can help keep the puck out of the net then notch us a few powerplay goals.

Guest maad
i hated this signing simply because i wanted shelly to stay. i hated it even more when i found out he's gonna wear #44. but i must say, it's all good now, roman is what we needed, he fits just great, he adds stability to our blue line, something that was missing last year
tommyv
Gord Miller: "Pierre of all the summer free agent signings how do you rate the one involving Roman Hamrlik" Pierre Mcguire: "On a scale from one to 5 i'd definitely say a 4! He has brought a second wave of defensive stability to Montreal that they haven't had in years" That about sumed it up for me, He is a machine out there just breaking up every decent scoring chance before it even unveils its ugly face. Once again last night, stick work was impressive, physically dominating his opponents in the corner, and making good, clean, safe passes, I am so impressed by this guy, I can't help but think his work alone is a bigger contributor to our success than has been mentioned. I mean at the end of the day we are looking like a much better team than last year, and he is truely the biggest impact change in the lineup with perhaps the exception of Price. Guest Thevalleyman
Last year Roman was a +22, Souray -36. This year Roman is +6 and Souray is -3. Roman is healthy and playing, Souray is not. Roman has impressed me from game one. As big a fan of Souray as I was, Roman is teice the defemceman. Good job Gainey on this signing and thank you Roman for joining the HABS.
