#46 Andrei Kostitsyn 2007-08

overall not a bad deal, but 3.2 a year coming off just the one good season is a bit to much of a raise for me but hopefully he will justify it the talent is surely there

I was thinking the same thing Onzeee; especially considering Plekanec was signed to a two year deal at $1.4M and $1.8M last year.

Gainey must expect a lot more out of Andrei and maybe he had to consider the Russian Team offer too.

Andrei's seem to be more of a goal-scoring forward than Plekanec. Not that Plekanec doesn't have a good shot, or anything, but Plekanec comes off more as the shifty playmaker, and Kostitsyn as a physically powerful goal-scorer. Kostitsyn's value is higher than Plekanec based on that potential alone, I think. I hope we keep both of them for a long, long time! :D

I think that a lot of people would disagree that Kostitsyn's value is higher than Plekanec's. Luckily we got Plekanec signed last year, because he would demand a very high price this year. He has proven himself on a consistent basis over the last year and a half. His on ice vision is one of the best on the team, if not the best. He plays regularly on the PP and PK.

We should not be comparing their value because they are two great young talents, who should get even better. The Habs are very lucky to have both of them.

If free agent signings are any indication Andrei's salary could be mostly due to inflation. Since he's an RFA the threat of an offer sheet also comes into play.

He becomes RFA when the contract expires, he would have been UFA if it was one year longer.

That makes the signing all the more better. If Andrei grows into his potential, when the current contract expires, we'll either resign him, match a bidder's contract, or at the very least get a bunch (four is the max I think and I expect the max from Mr, Andrei K in 3 years time) of 1st round drafts picks in return , which will make potential bidders wary of offering him such a huge contract. :D

Whatever the case, the power is in Mr. Gainey's hand on whether or not Andrei stays a Canadien when his current contract expires.

I for one hope andrei and his brother sergei are canadiens throughout their entire career...those 2 are players everyteam wants because they offer everything....they can skate, shoot, pass, play defense and also hit(sergei will throw some huuge hits this season MMW). those 2 along with price and possibly komi I would sign to very long contracts...10 years if they would except

At this point in time you would like for those players to stay with the Canadiens but lots of things can happen in 3 years time.

And those 10 year contracts are huge financial investments that can cripple a team for a very long time if the investment doesn't pan out. Out of all the players you named, I would only sign Komisarek to a 10 year contract. I'm as much a fan (or more) of the other 3 players but there is just too much risk involved for such long contracts.

(sergei will throw some huuge hits this season MMW).

And hopefully more dirty ones as well now that Laraque is on the team.

IMO, Sergei's hit on Downie in junior was dirty, as was his hit on Krejci (knee to knee), Enstrom, ehhh, I'll give Sergei the benefit of the doubt but I loved all of them hits. I just wish Andrei would sometimes show more, as Carbonneau put it, dog like Sergei.

Getting Andrei signed to a 7-year contract under $4 million would not be a risk at all, given today's market. This is where I feel Gainey is a bit too conservative with his contract terms. Sure, a long contract takes away flexibility, but it will likely give us great savings as the cap rises and player salaries get even more inflated. If Andrei performs well on his current contract, what on earth is his market price going to be in three years? We might have to pay through the nose, where we'd be saving money on a longer-term contract.

Perhaps! :D

However, I'm sure in three years from now the trio of Koivu, Tanguay, and Kovalev may no longer be with the team, and paying the extra cash to re-up Kostitsyn probably won't be a huge issue. Assuming that in 2011-2012 Kostitsyn is a real leader and point getter for this club, I would have no problem giving him $6 million - $7 million.

This was the right move, and you need to give bg credit,,

No offense, but I won't give Gainey a ton of credit for doing something everyone (rightly) expected him to do. It's a GM's job to re-sign his team's talented young assets to reasonable contracts. Andrei wasn't playing hardball, his brother is already here, there was no reason for this contract signing to hit any snags. I don't know about you, but nobody wanders around giving me credit just for doing the job I'm paid to do.

Exceeding his potential with 53 points?

Did you expect him to be on the 1st line this season? Did you expect him to be on our #1PP? Did you think he would get 50points in the season?

I sure didn't. I didn't expect much from him because this is his first complete NHL season.

Potential includes (What he can do on the ice with or without the puck, getting points, and hits)

I believe he surprised everyone this season and he can still exceed what he has done. He can be 100 point man.

Saying "exceeding his potential" means the 53 points is the best he'll do.. ever.
