Rexdale player glowing over gold at junior hockey championships

Subban a standout on defence with OHL's Belleville Bulls

BY SEAN DURACK

January 10, 2008 05:19 PM

You couldn't script Rexdale native P.K. Subban's budding hockey career any better.

A third year skater with the high-flying OHL Belleville Bulls, where he racked up 15 goals and 41 helpers in 68 games last season, Subban - or Subbanator or Subbz to some - was a sturdy seventh defenceman for the gold medal-winning Canadian junior team.

The team returned to Canada earlier this week after dropping just one game in the Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 World Junior Championship tournament in the Czech Republic.

It marked the fourth successive tournament title for the junior team and the first appearance for Rexdale's Subban, 18, a former Greater Toronto Hockey League Jr. Canadians and Markham Islanders standout.

His dream-come-true tale continues to write itself as he was selected in the second round (43rd overall) in last year's National Hockey League draft to the Montreal Canadiens, a well-respected and long-loved team in the Subban household.

Subban, who is eligible to return to tryout for the national team next year when Canada hosts the tournament in Ottawa, tallied a two-minute penalty and three shots in seven games during this year's World Junior's.

The former Runnymede Collegiate scholar brought a one-man cheering section to the Czech Republic in his father Karl, a principal at Brookfield Middle School. The tournament has always been a part of Christmas celebrations for the Subban family.

"I was just happy to be a part of it," said dad Karl. "The patriotism, it was unbelievable, the Canadian fan support, the parents, there were Canadian flags everywhere, it is something I will never forget and I'm sure P.K. pinched himself everyday just to make sure he was really there."

P.K. - short for Pernell-Karl - was content with his contributions to the national team at the tournament.

"With the ice time I got I just tried to make sure that I performed the best that I could... I was told that I accomplished that, so, I was happy.

"But the most important thing was that we win the gold, and we did that, so that makes it all that more special" said Subban, noting that watching an unstoppable Swedish team come back from a one-goal deficit in the final period of the championship game was almost too much to bare.

He admitted that it likely shaved a couple years off his life. "It was very nerve-wracking," said the five-foot-10, 200-pounder.

George Burnett, who has coached Subban for the three years the junior has been with Belleville, said last season marked P.K.'s breakout year, a big reason why he was chosen to the national junior team and to the storied NHL Canadiens operation.

He recalled his first interaction with Subban several years ago when the youngster arrived at the Bulls' training camp.

"He told me that he was going to make my team (in September 2005), which is very uncommon for a sixth-round pick, at least when you are 16."

Subban made it onto the team that year, notching 12 points.

"He's very talented offensively, but nobody believed a year ago that he could defend. But through some injuries (to the team) he got to play a bit, he played strong for us in the last stretch (of last season) and the post season. I think that that's a big reason why too he became a second round draft pick, because of his ability to defend.

"He's a big personality guy, very upbeat and a very determined young man. He's determined to be a pro hockey player and I don't think that there will be anyone or anything that will stand in his way."

I think that maybe after PK season is done with belleville he will join the bulldogs.

Then i think he and price will play go together and then the will be able to get go chemistry when they are up with the big club together.

I don't think he'll be old enough to leave junior for Hamilton.

You are correct. Unless he makes the big club he will play in Junior. He does not need to be signed until June 2009 so I would not expect him until the fall of 2009 (and probably in Hamilton). :)

The same goes for Weber.

Subban didn't pick up a point in the OHL All-Star game, but its funny at the end of the game he congratulated everybody and had a smile from ear to ear and was interviewed at the end of the game as well by the guys that do the play by play on Sportsnet and Subban said it was great playin with all the best players in the OHL and then right after the interview the rest of the winning team were callin him over to get into the team picture, and the camera was still on him and the announcers were still talkin about him, sayin he is such a treat and sayin that he always has a smile on his face and from the reaction when they took the team picture was the same reaction he had (January 5th) when Canada won the gold medal in OT........After seeing that and of course seeing him at the WJC having so much fun I have to definately say that I am very happy and proud that Subban is a prospect of the Habs and hopefully guys like him and Yannick Weber remain Habs for a long time

I'm not too excited about Subban anymore. It just seems that we have so many defenseman ahead of him on the depth chart. I wonder if he'll ever crack the lineup.

Markov, Komisarek, Hamrlik (all here, hopefully, for plenty of years).

Streit (if he resigns)

McDonagh

O'Byrne

Valentenko

Weber

Fischer

Poor Subban.

Don't forget that we never have too many of those :D There is always a fourth line to play the extra D's

No, seriously, D is our strenght right now and in the future. I expect a young D could be traded. I just hope it's not my boy Valenrhino :D

why wouldn't u be still excited about Subban? He's not doing as good offensively for Belleville as last year but he is having a decent season yet and he is a big reason why the Bulls are first in their conference and the second best overall team in the OHL behind Kitchener, he's a pretty good skater and passes the puck well and has a decent shot, he has a really good attitude, and even though he didn't get that much ice time, Craig Hartsburg and the rest of the coaching staff seen enough good outta the guy that he made the Canadian team at the World Juniors and Subban has a pretty good chance to make it next year again (which is more for what I can say about Americans David Fischer who doesn't have any oppertunities left after missing the World Juniors this past year and Ryan McDonagh who didn't make the American team this past year) and of course Subban played in the OHL All Star game last night and is probably still one of the top ten defenseman in the OHL in my opinion, and he'll continue to play his heart out for Belleville and he'll eventually play out his boyhood dream and play for his favourite team growing up which is of course the Habs..

and also even though as far as depth goes your pretty much right but I disagree with a couple though

Andrei Markov, Mike Komisarek, and Mark Streit (after he gets resigned) will be Habs for a long time but I don't see Hamrlik being with Montreal after his 4 year contract is up because he's going to be 34 April 12th and after his 4 year deal is done he'll be 38 so theres a pretty good chance he'll be ready to retire and if he does play another year or two it wont be with Montreal, and then from the youngsters I think Subban is ahead of Fischer and I can see one of our defensive prospects being dealt and if there is I can see it being (even though they are both decent prospects) David Fischer and even though its unlikely Ryan O'Byrne

Hockey's Future Article - 10 March 2008

Sure, Subban didn’t play a whole lot during Team Canada’s WJC victory, but Timmins was not worried. “In speaking with the coaching staff they were pleased with his demeanor and abilities,” he said. “He should be proud of what he brought on and off the ice as a teammate. And if you look back at Karl Alzner last year, you’ll see he was in the same position.”

The player Timmins referred to as a “wild colt” last year has displayed the consistency for which the club hoped. He showed an ability to take his game to the next level during last year’s OHL playoffs, and this year – despite his overall numbers dropping a bit – he’s displayed a better overall game and leadership. This year, Subban’s seven goals and 34 assists in 54 games is slightly off the pace he set last year when he scored 15 times and added 41 helpers in 68 games.

Empty net, with one second left, I think... Got him on the scoreboard, though.

P.K. had another goal and an assist tonight though it was in a losing cause as Belleville lost 5-4 to Peterborough in OT. Belleville outshot Peterborough 55-38 in the game.

That's 4 pts in his first 2 playoff games. He is a +3 in the two games played as well. :D

He now has 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists) in 3 games.

I was at that game, i live in belleville and have watched him play a lot this year and last year.

When we signed him i was so excited.

This kid has a lot of skills!! Ridiculous shot with tremendous power and he has amazing skating skills, like, absolutley amazing skating skills and his passing skills are good as well. He has the most skill on the ice most of the games he plays but he has one downfall.

He suffers of brain cramps once in a while, he's not the smartest player, either being too risky because he's too cocky or something or just plain stupid. His positioning is not the greatest but still a solid d-man.

Great skill but he needs to stay focused and composed throughout the hockey game.
