Guest 1970 Habs
My last words on this about Burke... Desperate times call for desperate measures. Funny it is the exact same thing I said (and a few others) about Kevin Lowe when he went after Penner.
Guest J Haul
My last words on this about Burke... Desperate times call for desperate measures. What exactly was desperate? I'm not following. Signing a heralded young player to an extension is desperate? I'd say its protecting an asset deemed worth protecting. Burke obviously feels Getzlaf was worth spending the money on, while Penner was not. Furthermore, the situation is completely different. Burke signed his OWN prospect, Lowe signed SOMEONE ELSE'S prospect. Either way, the point is that the way Lowe went about things grossly inflates the market, thus forcing Burke and other Gm's to pay a higher premium to protect such assets. Guest 1970 Habs
I think if the GMs as a whole feel that prices have gotten over inflated for RFAs as a whole they will not play in the bidding game. However the problem is there are probably enough GMs that are stupid enough to pay inflated prices. Unless the Cap Limit increases substantially in the long run GMs paying high prices for RFAs are playing a losing game.

Guest 1970 Habs
If the league stops raising the cap, something's gotta give. No doubt but it make you wonder whether salaries was what the strike was all about. However I am way off topic. Back to Anaheim - Burke really needs to watch his dollars as he is so close to the Cap; especially if Neidemeyer comes out of retirement. It will not leave him much room to move/make changes if he needs to.

If they got Selanne back I'd be insane! They would have almost the exact same team as last year. Except instead of Penner they have Bertuzzi and instead of Dipenta they have Schnider. Guest devils_fury2
I noticed on the score this morning that with Scott Niedermeyer coming back to the Ducks, that they will now be over the salary cap, and it sounds like Brian Burke (once Niedermeyer is ready to play) will make a trade to make room for him, wonder if Montreal would make a pitch to get Matt Schneider or Francois Beauchemin back.....I doubt it but ya never know

He is 27 and is just starting to fit nicely in Anaheim. Schneider (who was picked up to replace the hole left by Niedermeyer) the team may dump but not if he has a no trade clause. Interesting dilemna Burke is in and one many teams may not be eager to help him out of. Is it no wonder he wants to share Cap salaries when a team trades players. Guest habsfan#08
I read in a fantasy article on Yahoo sports that Anaheim will not have to dump Schnider. I wonder how else they would fit Nieds under but hey, I'm not arguing. And on Nhl Numbers it says they have about 6 mill to work with. http://nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=ANA

Guest devils_fury2
Has Niedermayer been getting paid all this time? Yes I think he has been, but with him being retired it didn't go against the Ducks as far as the salary cap goes, but now it will of course
tmash
Yes I think he has been, but with him being retired it didn't go against the Ducks as far as the salary cap goes, but now it will of course There's several problems with this: 1.) Retired players are not paid 2.) Had Nidermier officially retired, he would have to avoid the NHL for one full season 3.) Nidermier was suspended So: Has Niedermayer been getting paid all this time? No, he was suspended and so he didn't recieve salary and it didn't count against the cap. Although it was more formal, essentially he just didn't report to training camp since he never officially retired and was still under contract. Guest JL
DUCKS SIGN, CALL UP ST. JACQUES THE ANAHEIM DUCKS ANNOUNCED ON THEIR WEBSITE TODAY THE SIGNING OF DEFENCEMAN BRUNO ST. JACQUES TO A ONE-YEAR CONTRACT, THEN RECALLED HIM FROM THEIR AHL AFFILIATE IN PORTLAND. Spector's Note: Hat tip to "JPDucks". This move could signal that Ducks GM Brian Burke may be preparing to make that salary-dumping trade that's been anticipated since announcing Scott Niedermayer's anticipated return to the roster. http://www.spectorshockey.net/rumors.html

Guest 1970 Habs
Burke - Oilers picks from Penner in play The Penner deal, meanwhile, could help Anaheim at the trade deadline. The Ducks received Edmonton's first-, second-, and third-round draft pick in 2008 as compensation. The first-rounder could be a high one depending on how the Oilers finish out the season. "I've been asked repeatedly over the last couple of days, is the Edmonton pick in play, and the answer is yes," said Burke. He likely won't deal it for a rental player - a player slated for unrestricted free agency at season's end. "We think there's seven players in this draft and then there's a drop-off," said Burke. "If it looks like it's going to be a top-seven pick, then it's not going for a rental. It could go in a hockey deal, but it's not going for a rental." That pick sets the Ducks apart from other contenders because it's higher than the first-round picks those teams would naturally hold. "If Boston was offering its first-round pick right now, where would that be, 16th or 17th?" Burke said. "Whereas the Edmonton pick .. and again, I'm not putting up bulletin-board material for the Edmonton Oilers, they've managed to win some games, they're playing well despite some real serious injuries and God bless them. But that pick could be a considerably higher pick than 16th or 17th or 18th. "And that's where I think we have an edge if we're willing to deal that pick for a rental - but if it's high enough I'm not dealing it for a rental." Guest habs_fan1160
Selanne has been playing a hell of a game since he came back. He's helped the Ducks turn around their season and is playing IMO some of his personal best hockey too. I'm a huge Selanne fan, so I'm glad to see him come back with such force. Guest 1970 Habs
Thought this should go here as well. According to Darren Dreger on TSN today, Pronger will most likely get a 10 game suspension which means he'll miss the last 9 regular season games and one single playoff game. They also showed Chris Simon multiple times and he's not too pleased with how the league is handling the Pronger situation(or lack of handling). Here's a new TSN article which includes some quotes from different players about this incident. http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=232002&hubname=nhl

Guest Innis_Mor
Burke and the coach probably not too happy with this latest from Pronger: SJS and Dallas going like gangbusters, and now Anaheim is more likely to finish 5th and open on the road in the play-offs against the like of Dallas (not an easy start) plus, now Pronger and his history is rather fresh, in the minds of refs, but more importantly, Colin Campbell. THat means any transgression in the play-offs could see a heavy suspension for "doing it again" so soon
Guest 1970 Habs
Maybe Pronger should start playing "smart" hockey like a Team Captain is expected. What goes around may come around as it may not be too long before he is on the receiving like Scott Stevens in New Jersey.
