Guest JL
Some predict that they'll be contenders this season... I say they're pretenders, aspiring to a playoffs spot.

Guest muskeg
while philadelphia is surely a better team than last year (on paper, at least...the season will tell how truly better they are) i don't think they're contenders...they may make the playoffs again, and then everyone is a contender. the goaltending is a weak point in my mind. better than last year, no doubt. and briere seems to be adjusting just fine. again, though, te season is young. i love speculating though because one of two things happens...you look like a genius or a fool. usually i wind up looking like the fool...like last year when i though kovalev would get around a point per game and samsonov would score 20-25. Yeah, it's kind of too early to tell just how much better they are and I agree on the goaltending. Biron is a definate upgrade but he is a back up goalie on many other teams. I say the Flyers finish no better than 6th place.
Guest JL
well it didn't take Briere much time to help out his new team. (2 goals /game winner included) In spite of their offensive contribution, that entire line of Brière (-1), Gagné (-1) and Knuble (-2) are in the minus column... Guest ChriS_HigGinS#1
Was Simon Gagne injured in tonights game? Yahoo! boxscores are showing that he only had 2 minutes and 48 seconds of ice time in tonight's loss to the Panthers. Huge blow if it's serious...to my fantasy team. He must be amazing!!!!! yeah, they do that a lot with Yahoo!, they have an obsession with Steve Downie for some reason... Just look at the penalty summary: Philadelphia roughing - 2 min 2:25, S. Hartnell served by S. Downie Philadelphia fighting - 5 min 7:49, S. Hartnell served by S. Downie Philadelphia holding - 2 min 2:44, R. Cote served by S. Downie Philadelphia fighting - 5 min 10:43, R. Guest FlHabsFan
Philly had the goon squad out last night in Tampa. Picking fights all night, and Brierre looked like he was at a swim meet. Havent seen that much diving since the 04 summer olympics.

Guest St. B. Voyageur
I think Philly's objective from the start of the year was to outgoon the Senators, and every other team in the Conference, and if that was their objective, I guess you can say they are so far successful. The Senators' aura grew last year after Neil cheap-shotted Drury, and it seems to me that the Flyers are out to send a message that they are the toughest customers this year. I personally despise this kind of hockey, and I hope the NHL punishes severely for Jones's hit. Unfortunately, however, there are too many players in hockey who will destroy star players careers for their teams, and a 10-25 game suspension doesn't seem to be a deterrent when the player injured isn't able to regain his form (like Drury last year). When they play us, we better have our heads up, and be ready to defend each other, unfortunately...

I don't think it's fair to put Jones in the same league as Downie and Boulerice. At least Jones was just finishing a hit and caught Patrice Bergeron in a bad position. Just look at the hit Latendresse put on Whitney in the pre-season, same type of hit from behind except Bergeron went off on a stretcher. Thats just bad luck for Jones in my opinion. I don't expect a suspension.

I don't expect a suspension. When I watched that hit again, I really didn't like Bergeron's position, you don't turn your back on the play with your head extended out near the glass in a race for the puck. A guy can't hook you anymore to straighten you out on the hit, so you are leaving yourself vulnerable. I wouldn't suspend Jones either, after looking at it again. A player needs to establish better body posistion (square the shoulders) in a situation where he knows he might get hit. Turning with your head to the glass is dangerous (Erik Cole) and I hope players are taking note. If Jones gets suspended, I don't know if that message will be conveyed. That said, maybe the NHL should think twice about the no-give glass, because in the old days a player could have bounced off the glass with that hit, instead of lying unconscious. Guest Miltie01
I think the players have to use their heads more, on both sides of this issue. Do they think the rules for hitting from behind protect them from getting crippled ? Do think it is worthwhile finishing the check when the other player is in no position to protect himself ? The players have to figure this one out quick .

AK-1
Bruins' Alberts leaves after head shot; Flyers strike AGAIN! Philadelphia, PA - Boston Bruins defenceman Andrew Alberts left Monday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers late in the second period with what appears to be a head injury. On the play, which occurred with 5:38 remaining in the second period, Flyers forward Scott Hartnell collided with Alberts, who was sliding on his knees near the boards at center ice. Hartnell's elbow and shoulder hit Alberts flush in the side of the head, causing it to collide with the dasher violently. Alberts lay on the ice for several minutes, and was eventually lifted to his feet and escorted to the locker room for evaluation. He did not return to the game. Hartnell received a major for boarding and a game misconduct for the infraction. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=223738&hubname=

Guest JL
Well, well, well... Here's how the Flyers are getting around the suspensions to both Boulerice and Downie... They're calling them up and sending them down (paperwork only, not physically) so that they can still play in the AHL and serve their suspension in the NHL at the same time! Proof... Philly is in a great position because the called up player actually has to show up to be considered "called up", but the Flyers and Phantoms play minutes away from each other, so they have a huge benefit there other teams don't, from what I heard. Guest js2
And it continues, this time with Riley Cote. It was a busy weekend on the NHL discipline front. Philadelphia Flyer forward Riley Cote is likely to be suspended for his match penalty at 17:46 of the third period in Dallas's 4-1 win over the Flyers on Saturday. Cote delivered a high head shot against Dallas defenceman Matt Niskanen. Any player assessed a match penalty is automatically suspended pending a review by the league. It will be a shock if Cote isn't suspended by the league. The larger issue is whether the NHL will consider penalizing the Flyers as an organization for yet another player being suspended. So far this season, the Flyers have had five players suspended for on-ice acts of violence: Steve Downie 20 games for a head shot on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond; Jesse Boulerice 25 games for a crosscheck to the head of Vancouver Ryan Kesler; Randy Jones two games for a hit from behind on Boston's Patrice Bergeron; Scott Hartnell two games for hitting Boston's Andrew Alberts' head into the boards when the player was on his knees and defenceless; and now Cote's high head-shot on Niskanen. There are no specific rules to penalize organizations that are frequent offenders, but in light of the Flyers' rap sheet this season, it has been suggested the league should take action. In other news, Nashville's Scott Nichol, who has been suspended several times by the league, is looking at another suspension for cross-checking Montreal's Patrice Brisebois in the head in the Predators' win over Montreal on Saturday night. http://www.tsn.ca/tsn_talent/columnists/bob_mckenzie/
