He signed a 25 games PTO...

HAMILTON, ON – Hamilton Bulldogs General Manager Julien BriseBois announced today that the club has signed defenceman Joel Bouchard to a 25-game Professional Tryout (P.T.O.) contract. Bouchard is scheduled to join the team in Hamilton tomorrow.

Bouchard, 33, most recently attended the Columbus Blue Jackets’ training camp before being released in September 2007. The 6-foot-1, 209-pound blueliner missed the majority of the 2006-2007 campaign due to injury, appearing in only four games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the American Hockey League and registering three assists.

The native of Montreal, Quebec, has appeared in 364 career National Hockey League games with the Calgary Flames (1994-1998), Nashville Predators (1998-2000), Dallas Stars (1999-2000), Phoenix Coyotes (2000-2001), New Jersey Devils (2001-2002), New York Rangers (2002-2003, 2003-2004), Pittsburgh Penguins (2002-2003), and New York Islanders (2005-2006), recording 22 goals, 53 assists, 75 points, and 264 penalty minutes.

Bouchard has also suited up in 273-career AHL games with the former Saint John Flames (1993-1996, 1997-1998), Albany River Rats (2001-2002), Hartford Wolf Pack (2002-2003, 2004-2005), and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (2005-2007), posting 137 points (36-101-137) with 239 penalty minutes. For his efforts, Bouchard represented the Saint John Flames in back-to-back AHL All-Star games in 1995 (Providence) and 1996 (Hershey).

Bouchard was originally selected by the Calgary Flames in the 6th round, 129th overall, in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.

Put Kovalchuk with Lapierre and we'll have the ultimate anti-Crosby line.

Bring Downey back, and add him to that line.

Kovalchuk - Lapierre - Downey

A bit late on this topic, I know; but I suspected as soon as I heard the "25 game PTO" that he was simply signing up for an extended training camp, such that once he played himself back into shape his agent could start sniffing around for offers from teams looking for a cheap veteran defensemen.

Nothing against the guy, just don't see much for him longterm in this organization unless four or five of our defensemen get injured.

Umm...question. I just saw a clear pictures of what Joel looks like.

Is this the same Joel Bouchard who has that show on RDS with all the Quebec NHL players doing practice drills?

Yes.

K. I thought Bouchard was just an announcer who had a real passion for hockey. :P Thought maybe he coached or something. He'd make a great leader on a team with his hockey sense and knowledge.

I'd like to see him make it. He's just 36 games of getting a full NHL pension I hope he makes it as well.

That's not really fair. Wasn't it injuries that he sustained while playing IN the NHL that took him out of commission? Something seems crooked...

Nothing crooked, you have to have 400 games played to get that pension. Trust me a person in his shoes would play if he could, especialy when your that close.

if another d-man got injured i'd call him up, this guy is a great leader, just watch the show how he's has the passion for hockey

We'd have to first sign him to an NHL contract as his rights don't even belong to Montreal. He signed a contract with Hamilton, no affiliation.

I see that he has played 19 of his 25 games tryouts so far, accumulating one goal, 6 assists for 7 points, with a +3 in that span which includes getting back into game shape. I'm curious if we'll trade someone out of Montreal and offer him a contract or not?
