Nice initiative. but 400+ for a brick in the wall....no thanks

They start at $175, but still... no thanks...

Buy a brick and you will be forever immortalized in stone.

Maybe the brick is engraved in gold foil.

Someone needs to be fired in the Marketing Department. First the Koivu English-only debacle and now this blatant money grab. Fans pay enough to go see a game, now we're expected to pay for the construction of a courtyard that will become prime real estate for scalpers to ply their trade? Do they think we're stupid?

If they want to have a plaza, Mr. Gillett should pay for it himself, just like Molson did when they built the Bell Centre.

If they want to include the fans in the centennial celebrations in a meaningful way, 100% of the cost of a brick would go to the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation. That's a winning proposition that I would get behind.

Just Like Habs tickets!

wouldn't it be great if that wiz was due to a number of beers being drunk during a habs stanley cup win? mmm, success wiz.

I'd consider it maybe if the money went to charity, if it doesn't this is just a disgusting money grab.

A portion of the proceeds from brick sales will benefit the Montreal Canadiens Alumni Association.

I tend ot agree with you. When I fist saw the add I assumed that the money was going to the Montreal Canadiens' Foundation but then I read further and realized it wasn't.... The Habs are usually very classy but this seems move looks rather cheap.

Any idea the definition of portion?

Seriously, this is the 3rd most valuable NHL franchise that makes millions each year, do they really need to do this? I could understand if it was Nashville and a "save the team" sort of initiative, but this is just getting selfish.

Although I do agree with this being very expensive, (as in way out of my realm of financial possibilities at the moment) I'm not sure I follow when you say that the Habs Marketing Dept. had something to do with the Koivu language debate. Wasn't that an elected official's spare time side-project that the media got a hold of and blew out of proportion? I guess I'm just not seeing the link between the Koivu language issue and the Marketing Department....

I was going to get a brick, so I could take the family out on a vacation when the kids get older and show them that our family has a brick in the centennial plaza, but as I was reading the fine print, it said that the Montreal Canadiens organization is obligated to keep the plaza up after July of 2013 or something to that matter. So I thought for $175 + taxes it wasnt worth it although I still would like to get one.

The issue wasn't some politician's pet project that was blown out of proportion by the media. French is the language of the majority here and it's also the official language. Imagine the same happening in reverse in Calgary or Toronto. The Habs made a mistake and were caught. Damage control was brilliant thanks to Koivu being smart and charming enough to offer up a quote about speaking "en Francais" to his wife in certain situations. ;):P

The organization blamed the Koivu screw-up on their marketing department and quickly hustled out the French version in time for the next home game. It was unbelievable that it was actually shown only in English in the first place - crikey, I'm an Anglo and knew there would be trouble when I saw it.

The marketing dept. is responsible for all promotion of the Habs, from all the content on this Website, to what's seen on-screen at the games, to promos like the commemorative bricks. Ergo, someone in that part of the organization was asleep at the switch with the Koivu thing and so IMHO, the brick promo is yet another bone-head move by some supposed marketing genius who found yet another way to make money. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The bricks are a great idea, the concept is already used as a fundraiser to build the Trans-Canada trail (www.tctrail.ca). Make 100% of the proceeds go to charity and I'll buy one.

I for one think its pretty cool. Why all the hate calling it a money grab? Who cares? Y ou don't want to buy one than don't! If I could afford one right now I so would! Its like anyother luxury purchase. sometime you have the cash for it sometimes you don't. Its about choices and they are yours to make..

I don't blame the Habs one bit for cashing in on the idea thats just good buisness. At the end of the day they are building something really cool that will honnor the tradition on the team.. It will give fans something cool to check out when visting the Bell Centre and since its outside anyone can enjoy it you don't need a game ticket.. To me thats cool.. As for the bricks It gives you an oppertuinty to put your mark on the teams history yes its a very small mark but a mark none the less. I would love to visit the Bell Centre and see my name in this awesome display. Years from now when I take my future son to his first game I can go and show him where daddys name is at the Bell Centre.. Thats cool. After I am dead and gone my name is still there... Thats cool..

I love this idea and I just wish I wasn't so poor right now!!

This is just a great all around idea and I don't call it a cash grab hat so ever.. You want a example of a cash grab here are a few..

1. The Toronto Maple Leafs creating a pay channel and giving that channel exlusive coverage of 12 games.. You have to pay to watch you home town team play.. Thats a cash grab.

2. Calagary and some other teams with actaul PAY PER VIEW games.

3. Again the Leafs sending Bills to bars that have Leafs TV (ussaly 2.50 per month) and billing them $5000. no notice just here is the bill you owe us.

4. Raptors chargeing there courtside ticket season ticket holders a 30% front row rights fee, and than subsequently puting another row of seats in front of them.. They where not refunded there 30% fee.

Those are cash grabs this is a choice.. Its not preventing you from seeing the games if you don't buy a brink. Its no different than selling a Jersery or a Hat why aren't people calling that a cash grab too?
