I think I've been neglecting something (it's not easy finding those gems):

On This Day in Habs History March 19 1959

Claude Pronovost (Goaltender and brother of Jean and Marcel) played in his third and final game as a member of the Montreal Canadiens organisation.

Seems a little mundane until you read this fact:

In his first NHL game as a member of the Montreal Canadiens (January 14 1956), he posted a shut-out... against the Canadiens.

??? ???

Terry Sawchuk, the Bruins starting goalie, was unwell. So their back-up, Long John Henderson, was to play in his place. However, as his size 13 skates had not made the journey from Boston to Montreal, the Habs backup, Claude Pronovost, was loaned to the Bruins for the game and posted a shut-out.

Bummer... WOW!!! Did the Bruins sign him long-term?

No, but if you look at the dates between his first game and his 3rd & final game, I think you can tell the Habs organisation wasn't too pleased.

On This Day In Habs History - March 20 1924

The Montreal Canadiens won their first Stanley cup as an NHL team, beating the Vancouver Maroons in a two game sweep. All goals scored in the final game were scored by two brothers. Frank Boucher opened the scoring for Vancouver. Billy Boucher then scored twice for the Montreal Canadiens.

On Billy Boucher's line was the overall points scoring leader for that year's cup: a rookie player called Howie Morenz.

Ah, the Glory days of the past... I wonder if the two were from Boucherville? And I wonder How he got the name Howie (short form... nickname?)... is there more as we are getting near the ends... of the Habs regular season.

Wonder no more, dear friend. Wonder no more:

Howie Morenz #7

...and there was me thinking it might be Howard...

(but I like the origins of "Toe" Blake's name - see if you can find that info...)

Nickname Toe Blake... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toe_Blake

His nickname came out of his childhood for his sister was unable to pronounce his name. When she said it, it often sounded like Hec-toe, hence Toe as his nickname which later replaced the nickname he had been given as a scorer, the Old Lamplighter, because he often activated the light behind the goal.

On This Day In Habs History - Two tidbits on this day

March 22 1927

George Hainsworth set a record for first year goaltenders with his 14th shutout of the season when the Canadiens beat Boston 1-0.

March 22 1959

Dickie Moore broke the record for most points scored in a single NHL season set by Gordie Howe (in the 1952-53 season) when he scored a goal and tallied an assist for his 96th point in a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers. The record held for 7 years until it was broken by Bobby Hull in 1965/66.

Number 4 is dear to my heart as well.

MN Jeopardy 4

These 2 diametrically opposite defencemen had their jerseys (#4) retired by their respective teams. One retired due to knee problems after 10 seasons and the other due to concussion problems after 22 seasons. While one player won 2 Stanley Cups the other hoisted the Cup 3 times.

Who were they?

Quick guess... who are Bobby Orr and Red Kelly?

Half right; however Red Kelly played 21 seasons and was on 8 Stanley Cup winning teams.

The other player is Scott Stevens.

Probably the last jeopardy question.

MN Jeopardy 2

The Montreal Canadiens twice (2) won the Stanley Cup in 4 consecutive years.

What were the two (2) decades they accomplish this feat?

  • 2 weeks later...
How would we run MN Jeopardy now? The MN Stanley number I guess?

If so let me be the first one to get the post-season run started:

MN JEOPARDY 16:

Over the course of the current season, we have outshot this by a total margin of 39-16

You say outshot... do you not mean that the Habs have outscored this team (Bruins?) 39-16
