I think if we try and play a run and gun offensive game vs Ottawa on Saturday with Heatley and Alfredson back they will kill us. We have to play that boring defensive style and capitalize on scoring opportunities and powerplays.

I like that - like a road game! But we should also PRESS given the opportunity - first on the puck type thing and cycle. We have that ability this year. If we wheel back on the defensive - they'll kill us!!!

Absolutely. I don't mean sit back into a passive box and let them control the perimeter. That's often what's interpreted when I say defensive style.

I mean annoying, systematic, smart, boring road game type hockey.

But that wouldn't explain the lazy hooking penalties...

Just to clarify things I was referring to this part of Jigger's post:

"I am worried about Koivu. I've always defended him and have been a huge fan of his but lately I don't recognize him on the ice. Maybe all the injuries, age, cancer etc are catching up to him. I'm not sure what, if anything can be done but it's a situation that seems to not be improving unfortunately."

Kinda like New Jersey and Minnesota?

Gainey better be getting some massive deals soon. This shouldn't be happening with this team that's "on fire". They should never have any difficulty with the sens, if they do then start making some changes and I don't mean the lines (which doesn't do anything at all anyways). It's about time Gainey finds people who will play with grit and passion, not just roll over.

This just in folks, the Canadiens Forum's negative thread SWALLOWS the whole forum whole in a concentrated team implosion against the ottawa senators.

Yeah, for real. That was an embarrassment of a game we played against Ottawa. Or well, Kostitsyn getting punched in the face was rather embarrassing. It basically epitomized the game - A younger, less capable team, attempting to stand up to the bigger and best squad in the East, and gettin' drilled in the face.

You know what i hate right now about the Habs. The fact that if they end up staying steady in 4th place and jersey stays at 5 we would be lucky to stay 5 games in the playoffs. The only teams we will be able to get passed right now without some really good trade would be philly or boston

Here is the perfect quote for this thread:

Habs have no fire, no heart, no guts. AND NO GOALTENDING WHEN IT REALLY COUNTS. They really need a sparkplug who will run around and hit and start a few fires, intimidate the opposition. They desperately need a Georges Laraque. This current version is a total recipe for failure in the playoffs, assuming they make it.

Another perfect quote for this thread:

The loss tells us, that we need to be sellers, not buyers....

I've been saying this since january....

we're NOT contenders....so everyone needs to stop thinking we're contending for anything....by the end of February we're going to be fighting for 7th and 8th.

I will continue to reiterate that our defense is in poor shape. I don't care if you have 3 Vinny Lecavalier's playing forward. When your defensemen struggle to get the puck out of their own end on 5 on 5 then your forwards cannot score from their own end. If the team is in their own end the majority of the game it severely cuts down on time in the offensive zone and legitmate scoring chances....

A very apparant shortcoming since Hamrlik has been out of the line up.

For one they need to keep Breezer out of the lineup. Waive him for all I care. Stop juggling Streit and Dandy between defense and forward. They need some big thugs back there that can clear the net and make the smart play out of the zone and I am not talking about a desparation chip shot into the neutral zone just so they can back peddle in their own zone again...

Added to note that absolutely any goaltender can look average if their defensemen cannot help them out.

I am also tired of seeing Markov jump into the play in the offensive zone. He should not anywhere near the opposition team's net and getting caught as much as he is.

You are right about Markov. It reminds me of the Rangers game where Breezer was caught up the ice at least 3 times in the second period alone..

Why do you think our offense has been so potent this year? It's because our Dmen are pinching! Everyone is afraid of it and its one of our bread and butter plays. Markov is an offensive horse his partner is a defensive horse. It is only natural for Markov to try and jump into the play for a goal when he knows that he has Komi skating backwards who can normally break up 2 on 1s without much trouble.

Still. Its apparent our D cant handle elite teams and if they cant the forwards better help out more. There is no reason to cycle around your zone for minutes at a time and in desperation they ice they puck only to have to keep the same line out because of it...
