Guest habs_fan1160
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080410/...ghters_graffiti MONTREAL - The city's mayor is seeing red - and white and blue - after firefighters painted several fire stations to show their support for the Montreal Canadiens. As the Habs prepared to face the Boston Bruins in the first game of their playoff series on Thursday, Mayor Gerald Tremblay was getting ready to send in work crews to clean up the impromptu paint jobs. "And we're going to send the bill to the (firefighters') union... it's tolerance zero," he said. http://d.yimg.com/ca.yimg.com/p/news/cbc/j...tl-firehab2.jpg? http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/cbc/080410/cana...eal_qc_habsfire
Guest jennifer_rocket
Perhaps someone has some insight. I'm not quite sure why the mayor would be so upset (however, I did not read the articles ). Wouldn't it be a larger hazard to the public for the fire trucks to have flags on them, potentially being a hazard to fire crews on scene somewhere? However, maybe the trucks don't have the flags on them when they're working. I don't know. I still don't understand why the mayor is so upset over some painted garage doors. They should just ask them to repaint the doors after the post-season. What's wrong with that? Anyone have an opinion on the matter?

This (from the little I understand) is one those long-running city-vs.-employee squabble-battles with never any end in sight (a very long running labour relations battle is continuing on here). An objective bystander might say nothing wrong with it if:the firefighters had applied in advance to the City to 'decorate' their buildings (Habs clinched a play-off spot how long ago?) they'd spent some time and money (and some professionals(?)) to do a proper job (the ones I saw on the news looked like my kid's day care class had done them!! Well, actually, they would have done better work. ) This is more political than any of us not involved can relate to.
Guest Bobineau
The city and firefighter's union have been in dispute for about 300 years so any little surperfluous expense, like painting Habs logos, will be thrown in the union's face. Guest habsfan321
Ok... If Tremblay doesn't want Habs logos on fire stations, I say he becomes mayor of Toronto. For god sakes, this is rediculous... The whole city is feeling it... And on top of it he says something like: I'm not against supporting the Habs, I'm against "graffiti"... The whole thing is really dumb.

Guest Felquiste
Well I must admit Gérard Tremblay have a point. The stations are a public propriety and they can't make want they want with it. But in interview I think he really over-reacted Maybe if they would have asked it before...... Guest Beliveau4
If the logo's are removed and when the Habs win the Stanley Cup, the mayor will be the first one to say this " We are proud of our team, we should be proud, I urge everyone to wave flags and display the Habs logo everywhere" and of course he will say to the firefighters " You should put the habs logo back up. Guest jennifer_rocket
Alright, so "basically" this is just a case of the mayor squabbling over a dispute between the firefighters union and the city? Political levearge in negotiations of some sort, maybe? It seems silly to me.
Guest TheFly
Honestly, if the station would have put up flags, I wouldn't have mind, but they painted it on. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't fire station city property? What if you would have painted on the firestations, I'm sure you would have been charged for vandalism. I think it would have been more appropriate if they would have put up banners and flags rather than painting.

Guest habs_fan1160
I have a feeling in one way or another, this is going to come down to a waste of tax payers dollars. What a stupid Mayor...what Mayor demotes the promotion of their local hockey club, or any sports club for that matter?
Guest Clammy
Leave it to a politician to pull something ridiculous like this. I think it's great that the Firefighters are supporting the team, and considering what they do for a living, this petty moronic mayor should just STFU. GO HABS GO!!!!!! I've never heard of something this extreme thought. I in Ontario anyone could support the Leafs in anyway they wanted, and where I grew up - it was a smaller town, so they thrived on their minor hockey and it was everywhere come playoff time. I'm going to guess this guy isn't going to be very popular.

Guest CHimbued
Montreal doing well promotes civic pride. This just creates divides between hardliners and what I assume is the majority of people in the city atm, those who are happy the city's team is doing well and happy with the sense of community it creates.. No need to do this mr mayor.
