greetings gents,

no this doesnt belong in the negative thread, MN sub-forum or anywhere else as this will most likely be a little rant which will be closed and forgotten in a day or two, but i wanna blow off some steam ;)

walked into a capsule sportive yesterday to pick up two caps which i thought were "worth" the 90$(dont ask...), the north east division and stanley cup chmapionship caps. now im walking into carrefour laval expecting the usual saturday crowd and a close to empty capsule sportive. little did i realise we won the cup as of two days ago!

the place was hauled down except for a little entrance where two people could queeze through...they decorated it with a nice set of I-can-bench-press-350-lbs body/security guards...now i get anti theft devices, and it is playoffs so fine i just shake it off...its whats inside that really got me seing red, with no white and blue to cheer me up.

HUNDREDS of people inside getting there hands on EVERYTHING with a habs logo on it. were not just talking the "normal" fan stuff...pillows, pillow cases, sandels, thongs, shooters, caps, the go habs go tees, shoes, pucks, balls, jerseys(not the cheap kind!) and everything unmentionable in between!

now i get the "support your team" phenomena...but come on! spending 300-500$ just because they might have a shot at the cup? i spent 90 and i already want that money back!

what really gets to me though is this: these people were no where to be seen when the habs were slumping! there not even basement or closet habs fans! there just puck bunnies(both sexes fpr clarification) reproducing faster that one can say "et le but!" and as much as i like to see this city support its team...i cant help but imagine thousands of angry people down at ste catherines before june rolls around...

anybody else think its getting a tad bit out of hand?

Kind of like this Forum. Sudenly inundated with new members, which isn't a bad thing , or people posting for the first time in over a year , which isn't a bad thing , but where were these people all through the season

Better get some extra strong wheels, the wagon is filling up :P

i see what you mean JL, and yea regis this wagon is holding quite a weight right now...

i also want to make it real clear im not a "only real habs fans stick around when the team is down and out" type o guy...i just find this city's reaction to something that isnt garanteed is absolutly ridiculous.

I agree that there will most definitely be a load of people hopping on the bandwagon around this time of year but I like to look at this way: At least the city is not like Detroit which goes an entire season with their arena only half-full to sold-out during the playoffs. This team has sold out every game over the past 2 season so it is not like the fan-base was small to begin with.

I'm ambivalent about this. On the one hand, having people who know next to nothing about hockey come up to me and say, "How 'bout those Habs, eh?" is supremely irritating. On the other hand, I can't really fault people for jumping on the bandwagon -- winning attracts fans, and that's perfectly normal. I'd be willing to bet that a good chunk of today's fans only started following the team during the '93 Cup run. Heck, I became an Alouettes fan during the '02 Grey Cup year for precisely that reason. Of course, I've remained a fan since then, and that's the key for these fairweather fans. Becoming a fan when the team's winning is fine, as long as you remain a fan through the tough times.

Can't stand all this hype, i haven't posted in the 'car flag' thread because i'm pretty sure i'd get warned for saying something mean :P

My 21 year old sister who has never liked the habs or hockey, ever, told me she might watch the game (this was on monday). It is so frustrating that, like weep said, these hockey retarded 'fans' can think themselves in the same category as those who have been following for years, through thick and thin.

Sure, we might see a slight increase in 'real' fans after this, but all i see right now are tickets being bought up by suits and yuppies because the 'in' thing right now is the habs. All i see for the future is a larger group of moaners when/if the habs get bumped out of the playoffs and possibly another rise in ticket prices from dear old daddy gillett.

Sorry if i don't sound jubilant :P

this is why at time i love this forum!

"Religion is opium for the people" - Karl Marx ;)

that is a brilliant quote russian habs fan, and quite true that hockey, when the team is winning, becomes this city's religion. much like soccer in europe.

true, the fan base boom doesnt bother me since its always been there to begin with...its the ridiculous spending and ultimate faith of "theres no way this team can lose"

heck i warned some anti habs fans to stay far far away from carrefour, and i dared to say while in the shop, "until the habs are eliminated from the playoffs"...i think i was lucky to escape with my life! lol!

thats what defines a true fan weeping, the product attracted you but there was something more there to keep you around. sometimes its a player or a way of playing the game, but we know these pillow case buyers are far from sticking around when the going gets tough.

I'm torn about this too.

I've had habs stickers on my red car for the past 3 years. I was living in Toronto for part of that time, and it wasn't always easy to flaunt my allegiance to my team in a hostile environment.

Now I've added a car flag, and of course everyone else has too, even though a lot of these people didn't care about the Habs a few months ago. I feel like being a snob and saying to them: "Yes, but I've had my Habs stickers and plates for years!!!!"

On one hand, this phenomenon bugs me, because I was defending my team to nay-sayers for years.

On the other hand, I want people to love the Habs as much as I do!

But this kind of mania is pretty superficial: those people aren't going to be into the pre-season and training camp and all that stuff next season. They're just along for the playoff ride.

But you know what: the team appreciates it. They feed off all this support. Many of the guys have mentioned it.

So, I say, let the love flourish!!!

I really don't get your irritation with this, guys. You're making judgements on people you don't even know by calling them "fairweather" fans because there's something intriguing to them all of a sudden. Surprise surprise that's how the average human brain works. Show them something shiny and they flock to it. If that's irritating to you, days must be hard to go by... :D Just chill and enjoy! ;)

And I don't mean to offend anyone here but I don't see how owning a habs pillowcase or thong or spatula makes you a 'bigger fan.' I don't see why we need all of this material junk. I can proudly say that I own a hat with the habs crest on it but that is it. I don't need to 'prove' myself to anyone. I watch every game I can and that is enough for me.

Thank you, Mat... ;)

You, know I was at Carrefour yesterday too, and I agree it was annoying...it's all very commercialized and noisy...of course it's big business and we know that, but we also want our hallowed Habs to be respectfully worshipped.

It's a delicate balance, i guess.

Here are my two cents Mateus.

I don't feel that there's anything wrong with bandwagon fans. After all, most bandwagon fans were true fans at some point that just got frustrated with all the losing in the past 15 years. Same thing with this forum, we see members that haven't posted in years posting all of a sudden. One even got into a fight with me last night in the GDT

If you really think about it, there are only a few of us, that will watch every single game, that will read whatever is written about the Habs, that constantly know the state of the Habs. The rest, even though they don't follow every game or read every article are fans as well. They seem to care if Montreal does well and will fade if they do poorly. It's hard to be passionate about something when you're constantly disappointed.

I'm not totally disagreeing with your post, I think you make some very valid and accurate points but I interpret the whole "bandwagon fan" phenomena a little differently.

Cheers

see its like thefooligan5 said a few posts ago: you want to get a cap or a jersey, alright cool...but why buy 500$ in memoribilia if you are just going to disapear again and we know it?

why overeact to that extreme?

I'm not too sure with what I'm reading in this thread, probably because I had a late nite, or an early morning (real early) whatever - but I don't understand the issue being presented.

Bandwagon Fans? Wishy-Washy Fans? Wannabe Fans? Huh??? Geez, "Let my People GO". OK, I'm not a bible toter and maybe this is a trubute to Charleton Heston (rest his soul), but why should how OTHER people react and what they do or say make any difference to what our HABS are doing. And why should it make any difference WHO jumps on the WAGON and who doesn't and that maybe next year some of these so called HABS fans will be Red WIngs fans - who cares!

SOME PEOPLE - work hard or have hardships in their REAL life and love the opportunity to come together collectively and - change their minds - for a few hours and ENJOY!! Because many of these people get back to the reality of life afterwards - which SLAP them square on the chin! And thank you HABS - for what you guys are doing - to give a temporary relief to many fans - that may not have - GOOD lives - as many of us might have. I take exception to comments made about 'wannabe's' and their efforts to try to be a part of something good. WHO cares! And to label or judge certain people is not in the SPIRIT of good sportsmanship as far as I'm concerned. Example - I may have some 300+ posts in the last couple years or so but I'll put myself up against any fan who thinks they know it all. Afterall - I have a real life and may not have the opportunity to post thousands of posts - which say the same thing and is based on conjecture.

So unlike this posts idea of - Who are True fans and WHo are not' - I welcome everyone to ENJOY this present MANIA of HABS land and hope - whoever you are - that it brings you some joy to your day. And if in JUNE we are not planning the parade - so beit, and if you jump wagon because you want to feel like you're part of a winner - sobeit. I would rather see fans spend $500 on Habs stuff then turning it in on a street corner or gambling it away at the Casino.

All the power to anyone that can bring passion out - with NO restrictions!!

It's the nature of the beast my friend. It's wanting to belong to something grand, something great. No one wants to be left out. It's part of human nature, it's part of society.

Euro2004 :) . That was the same thing, I was on Notre Dame and 100th in Laval after we won, it was chaotic. I have it on video. Thousands of people that probably never watched soccer before united by the accomplishments of a nation that they probably never even visited. Most of those people will probably never watch soccer again, but I'm fine with that. The experience of everyone singing Ole and partying together was electrifying and something that I'll cherish forever. This is very similar to the Habs and your post. My point being, if the Habs win the cup, I'll party with the bandwagon fans as well and not even give it a second thought.
