SteenIsThaFuture
The Buffalo Sabres have traded forward Steve Bernier to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 2nd in 2010 and 3rd in 2009 round draft pick. Bernier was a key part of the Brian Campbell trade that Buffalo had with San Jose. I don't get this trade, was this another example of Buffalo's inability to sign its players? Michael19Cammalleri67
I like Bernier, but good trade to both team imo.
westernleafsfan
So to get this straight: All that Buffalo got for Campbell in the end is a 2nd and a 3rd round pick? Wouldn't Campbell have liked to stay in Buffalo and they just didn't offer him the money he thought he was worth (and I'm sure he wouldn't have asked for the kind of deal he now signed in Chicago...)? That's quite close to nothing for a guy like Campbell... especially when you consider they did have Bernier in between how could turn out to be quite a good power forward in a couple of seasons... QbGamer
They offered cambel something like 5.7 million over 4 or 5 years in buffalo Which is pretty much NOTHING compared to what he received now
koreysecord1992
Back out West for Steve. Was kind of looking forward to seeing how he'd play in a full season in the East. Oh well.
Scott92
Nice trade for the Canucks. Bernier is young and has major upside in my mind. Now with all the moves that Vancouver has made, hopefully Bernier can fine his rhythm and grow with this "new" team. Good luck to him with the Vancouver Canucks next season! 19sammy44
this trade happened because idiot Mike Gillis basically told the Sabre well if you don't trade him to us we'll give me an offer sheet and so instead the Sabres traded him so they get soemthing back. Gillis can't sign any UFAs can't trade with any teams. this is the only way he can improve our team now. Bernier is a nice player but not enough at all. Canucks still lack A LOT. In basic terms, Bernier was traded for Rivet. Sabres management weren't going to give Campbell the money his agent wanted, nor should they have, he's way overrated, so they at least got something out of the deal instead of just letting him walk away with nothing in return. The Sabres have a surplus of forwards who already fit in with their system. They've needed tough, gritty defensive help and veteran leadership for a while. It's a step forward. franck5890
Nice pick-up for the Canucks, but I really don't see why Buffalo would ship Bernier out. It's not like they made any serious signings that would totally nullify his position on the team, and they could use a big forward with soft hands. BadBrains
From TSN http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242851&...os=topStory_nhl With the Canucks forced into a 2.5 Million Dollar contract they now have less money to offer Sundin. They could still table That 10 Million per season offer but it would leave them closer to the cap than they'd like to be. They still have 5 additional RFAs to sign. Good news for Habs fans.... Raimu
GOOD FOR ST.LOUIS! This is a great move! Finally somebody discouraging offer sheets by firing back a counter-offer. If the Canucks don't match, hey, Steve Bernier is a damn good player IMO.
Innis_Mor
GOOD FOR ST.LOUIS! This is a great move! Finally somebody discouraging offer sheets by firing back a counter-offer. If the Canucks don't match, hey, Steve Bernier is a damn good player IMO. Tit for tat! Gillis (the newbie manager) asked for that one. Methinks he won't be in a hurry to try an offer sheet again; all he did was drive both teams' payrolls up -- yeah, like that'll impress the owner!!. And then he offers Sundin an over-the-top contract when he knows Sundin does not want to go out west, doing nothing but prospectively driving his price up. Amateur; thinks he is in the "big leagues" now. "I gotta build this team back up through drafting and player development", he says when he was hired -- and then he immediately goes on the offer sheet and pay-too-much-for-UFA's roll!! A professional amateur.
