Another Montreal Team

Hypothetically speaking:

Imagine if you won lottery and won a billion dollars.

The NHL was awarding a new franchise (or maybe relocating the Nashville Preds).

The Montreal Canadiens were not for sale but the NHL would allow you start a second new franchise in Montreal.

Would you do it and start a new hockey team in Montreal? (Of course this would never happen, but hypothetically speaking.....)

Do you think Montreal would be able to support two hockey franchises? Before you say no, consider other big market cities who support two teams.

A) New York Yankees & New York Mets

B) LA Dodgers & LA Angels

C) LA Lakers & LA Clippers (they share the same arena)

Yankees, Dodgers, Lakers are all teams with deep history & many championships. Grant it Montreal does not have the same population of New York or LA but Montreal (Quebec) hockey is considered a religion and the fan base is big. I'm sure once your new Montreal team won a championship, your loyalty would grow.

So if you did start a new club, what would you call the team? Don't forget it has to be bilingual.

I was thinking, The Montreal Mission. Colors might be maroon.

FYI - I would also bring back the Montreal Expos (with a new ballpark).

(Like I said, I'm a big HABS fan, this is all hypothetical.)

Montreal Maroons were the second team 1924-1938, won stanley in 1926 and 1935. Hockey Hall of Famers are

* Clint Benedict

* Toe Blake

* Buck Boucher

* Punch Broadbent

* King Clancy

* Lionel Conacher

* Alex Connell

* Red Dutton

* Reg Noble

* Babe Siebert

* Hooley Smith

* Nels Stewart

The Montreal Forum was built specifically for the Maroons, the Forum, in an ironic twist, would become the most famous arena in hockey largely because of the Canadiens, who shared the arena with the Maroons from 1926 to 1938.

The maroons suffered the most during the depression and were geared toward the anglophone market in Montreal. They had co-owners with the Canadiens. Len Peto, a director with the [[[Montreal]] Canadiens, took control of the dormant Maroons and succeeded in getting the franchise transferred to Philadelphia. However, despite being larger than all but two NHL cities (New York and Chicago), Philadelphia didn't have an arena that could accommodate an NHL team. The largest arena in the city, the Palestra, didn't have an ice plant and would have seated only 9,000 people in any case. The second largest, Philadelphia Arena, seated only 6,000 people for hockey. The league gave Peto until the end of the 1946–47 season to rectify this. Unfortunately, Peto couldn't find a suitable venue, and the Maroons were gone for good in 1947.

If you did not know all this it is ironic you picked Maroon for their colours.

I think it would be great to have another NHL team in Quebec, but not in Montreal. Sure, lots of hockey fans in the city, but I say, I rather have the Nordiques back in Quebec city.

ya def...I would love to see the nordiques back...bring the nashville team to quebec!! they deserve it look at all the all stars that came from the nordiques

Sounds like the old Footlball team we had in the early 90s', the Montreal Machine. The jerseys were maroon. Big 'M' logo. Really nice, actually.

I think the city could handle another team, but would die hard Habs fans really want to go watch another team? I would, but only because the tickets would be cheaper and it would be a good chance to see more teams live.

Bring back the Nordiques first then let's talk.

Back in the days Montreal had 3 professional team playing at the same time in Montreal, the Canadiens, the Montreal Shamrocks & the Montreal Wanderers, the Maroons only joined years later with the boston bruins.

Since i'm a nostalgic if i had a billion dollars i would bring back the expos and the nordiques, even if im a die hard canadiens fan, that would be just so great for the rivalry i would have to do it lol.

If I were a billionaire, without a care for how my team did financially due to me being able to sponge up alarming loses, I would buy the Preds and move them to Winnipeg. I'd spend the cap every year. I would commit myself to making NHL hockey accessable fairly regularly to the majority of interested 'Peggers. You see, we are cheap folk (corporate community included) and are not willing to spend large sums of money on tickets. So, I'd have to make sure that a family of 4 could enjoy a hockey game for something like 50-60 bucks. I'd lose money, but if I'm a billionaire, I wouldn't care.

I would also have to build an arena. The MTS Centre is not large enough in many ways (not just seat-wise). It would also be cool to support youth hockey by building arenas in small towns that lack them and supplying a budget to maintain them.
