Mike Komisarek: Cap Hit: 1,700,000$.

Komisarek wasn’t hired for his goal-scoring prowess, though the Hulk of Montreal’s defense didn’t disappoint with a couple of highlights against Toronto and Boston last season. All kidding aside, as the league’s top shot-blocker (227 blocked shots), who also finished 2nd overall in hits with 266, Komisarek shows a nice balance between taking pain and handing it out. His skating has improved with each season, and his confidence as part of the team’s top defense pairing is accented by the +9 he put up last year. As this season gets underway, Komisarek is in position to be the club’s most coveted free agent. At the very least he’s looking at triple his current salary, given what the market has paid other defensemen this summer, not to mention a minimum of 5 years on his next contract.

A great year for Mike Komisarek would be: Leading the league in blocked shots/hits, a + rating, and less—but more significant penalty minutes. By no means should a player be encouraged to play dirty, but Komisarek could afford to employ a bit more edge if he hopes to avoid some of the liberties other players will take with him. Everyone knows Komisarek is much more valuable to the Canadiens on the ice, as opposed to trading 5 minutes in the box with inferior players. That being said, Komisarek will have to keep his elbows up, and not be afraid to send early messages in games to opponents who think they can get away with cheap shots, knowing he won’t drop the gloves for a bad tradeoff. Anything less than an appearance in the top 5 in both hits and blocked shots, and a – rating would be a disappointment for Komisarek.

I think that BG should try to re-sign Komi before the 2008-09 season starts. If Komi expects to be paid $5 million or higher then unforunately the best option at the trade deadline is to trade Komi. I think that Komi is very good defensively, physical, lots of body checks, and lots of blocked shots. However the offensive numbers for Komi are not impressive. Not a slam against Komi as players that can block shots and land huge body checks are normally not offensively gifted. I think that Komi would have to sign for $3.5 million per season to allow BG to keep the other UFA and RFA players on the roster. I am assuming the current salary cap will not increase for next season.

If BG tries before the regular season begins with Komi hopefully a contract for 3 to 5 years can be signed. If Komi is looking for big money (and other teams would pay it) then BG puts the negotiations on hold until next summer. If Montreal looks like a Cup contender then Komi remains on the team until the victory parade. If Montreal does not look like a Cup contender then BG tries to get a great player / prospect for Komi.

I sort of agree. If it comes down to signing Komisarek or an equally gifted but offensive player they can't afford to sign him, seeing as we have Valentenko, O'Byrne, Emelin, and maybe Torp in the system. He can be partially replaced from within, the offense can't. I think he should be signed for 4.5 tops.

I hope Komisarek gets lock up for 6 years +

Not me. I want something more close to a 4-year contract. Sure he's going to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the deal, but we have several other bruising defencemen coming up through our system that could possibly replace Komisarek in 4 years if money becomes an issue at that point. One thing I don't want, is no contract. If we can't get him signed I will be thoroughly disappointed, but I don't think that's going to happen. Everyone knows Komisarek has brought an element to Montreal's defence that we haven't had for years... Toughness, sandpaper, grittiness. We aren't going to let that walk away right now. My preferred deal is a 4-year contract.

$3.50 million.

$3.85 million.

$4.15 million.

$5.00 million.

Annual cap hit of $4.125 million. I hope something like this can be worked out. Considering that Komisarek's offensive game is non-existent this doesn't seem too far-fetched to me. ;)

Agreed. Maybe if the team has a great season he'll sign for less knowing that the team is on the verge of greatness.
