#40 - Maxim Lapierre 2008-09

AK-1

Recommended Posts

I have to get this thread started I fully expect Laps to have a decent year - If ther are injuries he will fill in for a short time(a game or two) Have a great year Laps - no pressure- let the others take care of that

It'll be interesting to see what his role is this coming season after the acquisition of Lang and Laracque.

I am really excited to see what kind of a player Max is going to be for us this year. I hope his skating has improved and that he's going to play more of a defensive, instead of energetic, role with the club. I would really love to see him turn into a shutdown center, who can be a pest, and put up 20-30 points yearly. Someone who steps up in the post-season! Perhaps Max can work his way toward that this season.

I haven't seen Lapierre play a whole lot in the pre-season, but I think this year's going to be good for him. It seems that he's able to improve on his play pretty regularly. If he can improve on last year, he'll be a solid fourth, perhaps third liner.

Can't wait to see this guy in action for the regular season.

Well in the face off department neither him nor Chipchura have impressed me - they both have been inconsistent.

true, but I think Laps brings more to the Habs at this point. If there comes a time they would have to decide between the 2, I hope Laps is the one to stay.
According to the bunch at 110% Lapierre is the one who is under the most pressure to perform better if he wishes to remain a Hab... another bubble player (I don't agree with this BTW)

He has, once again, started off very slow this preseason. In my mind, he has done nothing to convince me, for the second straight year, that he deserves his spot any more than Chipchura does. He might be a little better on face-offs (I don't know the numbers), but his play hasn't been noticeable. If he does get sent down to start the season I wonder if that means a trade.

Can he be sent down without clearing waivers???

I think the Habs should keep him though, he usually starts a bit slow but he brings good energy to the game. I see him as one of our long term guys.

Good question.

Also, besides being able to play defense, what does Dandenault bring to the table that Maxim doesn't? Other than a higher salary, that is. If anyone should be on the bubble it should be Dandenault. As much as Lapierre hasn't shown me anything this camp, I would rather him stay and Dandenault go than Lapierre be sent to the minors again.

it wouldn't be bad to rotate our fourth liners to keep them hungry. i'm sure that both laps & chips are staying up with the habs. fully expect them both to see some time in the box even at the same time for example a game against the bruins we may see a fourth line as kosto-begin-laroq

Since he's on his second contract I believe he has to clear waivers.

I don't believe that's technically the reason, it has to do with games played not contract number; but in any case he needs to clear waivers.

I'm fine if we want to bench Lapierre, he's a good 13th-14th forward. His upside is somewhat limited, so I'm not too worried about messing with his development. I wouldn't necessarily just hand him a lineup spot (like the other 4th liners)

I don't really think there has ever really been a problem with the guys skating, I think for his size he's an excellent skater and its hard to take the puck from him once he has it I think, I kind of like the fact that he's an energy guy, but i do agree I'd like to see him become more of a shutdown center, I still remember in his rookie season when we used him against Sidney Crosby, Lapierre annoyed the crap out of Crosby from the beginning of the game right to the end, and this year he'll have George Laraque on his side too which would really help if he would take on more of a role like that, and I love the fact too that Lapierre is a pesky player...I think if Lapierre is up with Montreal right away and doesn't get sent down that he can deliver 20 to 30 points consistantly.....remember that last year he had 7 goals and 18 points in 53 games for Montreal....I think he would have had something like 10 to 15 goals and 25 to 30 points if he would have played a full season in Montreal........pretty good for a player who is consistantly on our third and fourth line who has never and probably will never get on to the 2nd line or receive any power play time

I dont understand how people arnt talking about how poorly Laps has been playing. I personally think he seems out of place and no legs on the ice. 2 2 on 1's and he decided to shoot both times, and missed i think both times. People are so hard on other players (Lats) but i had to almost go thte second page to talk about how Laps should be benched next game and CHippy given a chance in his place.

Well, on both his breaks he was with worse players than him (Dandenault and Bégin, respectively), he just played percentages and got blocked one time, missing the other.

Plus, he actually did good in the faceoffs department (7 for 13), which were a knock against him last year and in the offseason, which shows progress.

Granted there are more progress to be made, but for the moment, he is one big step over Chipchura.

Yeah, Lapierre doesn't need to generate offense. That's not what the line is for. They need to forecheck aggressively, generate energy, throw hits, win more faceoffs than they lose, and generally avoid giving up goals against during the short time they're on the ice. Lapierre has done well in that role through two games.

Only three games so far, but I have been very pleased with Lapierre's play. He had an excellent play-offs last year, and seems to be picking up where he left off.

Except maybe he's skating even faster! Is it just me, or does it seem to others that he has sped up?

There's no way Chichura (who I like) can compete with Lapierre on speed or on face-offs, so Chips will have a tough time knocking Laps out of the 4th line centre spot.
