#79 - Andrei Markov 2008-09

AK-1

Recommended Posts

The injury has moved up from the leg to the shoulder now  is it expected to move further up and be expelled through the nose by tomorrow night?

It will be decided today if he plays or not tonight. He trained with the team yesterday in St-Jovite and did a bit of extra shooting practice. Depending on who you read or listen to, some say he could play, some say he should play and some say he will play. Typical reporting on Markie, noone knows anything

Tanguay on Markov:

It roughly translate to:

He's part of the two or three best quarterbacks in the league. He reminds me of Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski or Scott Niedermayer. He's in the same category. It's a question of time before he gets the same recognition.

I'm very happy to play with Markov. With him we never make a bad pass. He recovers all the pucks, even those he receives in his skates. Communication is also very good.

Me likes Tanguay

i've been waiting for tanguay to be part of our team...now i know why

seriously though, i actually think it's a bad decision to put markov on the right point. the kovalev-markov tandem was unmatched in the east. prove me wrong but as much as i like markov's shot i appreciate his passing game more.

It was Streit/Markov on the point last season.....

Anyway, Markov can still pass the puck, no?

The same though came to my mind.

But re-thinking about it, we now have two great passers at the point. We will be able to do cross-ice passes just like Markov did to Kovy from BOTH side of the ice. Left point to right corner and right point to left corner. We all know the power and quality of kovalevs shot after receiving a sharp pass from markov ... but we might just discover a other ultimate weapon. Andrei Kostitsyn is often on the left side and will reveive many a quality pass from Markov. Andrei's shot is well known to be excellent ...

We will be dangerous.

I have a feeling that the initial positioning on any given PP shift will be as stated, but after one or two shots we will witness a dizzying 'ballet' of positions switches and passes. Once again, Markie said it best: they have to move the puck but they also have to move their feet.

Regarding Markov's passing, we'll see plenty of it at even strenght and, eventhough I dont want too many games going into in OT, we all know how Markov can be dominant manning the blue line by himself in those additional minutes. It's always a treat to watch.

Is it Friday yet?

Edit: maybe we'll finally have someone able to keep the zone on the right side on the PP ;)

Written peice from the interview:

Markov becomes new rocket man for Habs (Is that Elton John I hear in the background?... )

http://www.faceoff.com/hockey/nhlnews/stor...topstories.atom

"Andrei Markov loves the playmaker role but the veteran defenceman is being asked to shoot the puck more as he moves into a new role with the No. 1 power play in the National Hockey League. Markov moves from the left point to the right point and that's where the Montreal Canadiens look for the shot."

I concur entirely. "Static" and "same old" appeared to be a big part of the problem with the PP during the play-offs last year (that and the opposition studying the tapes of the Hab PP to death, which speaks to the "same old"). Looking forward to Friday; I'm at the game, and I'll be studying the Hab PP function from on high.

yes, but i was referring to the cross-ice feeds: markov to kovalev for the one-timer. :D

the point of moving him to the right is so he shoots more than he passes.

interesting perspective. you've eased my mind a bit - i'll be happy to hear, "tanguay...a markov...a kostitseen...le tire...et le but!!!" :P (will brunet mispronounce ak's name too?!)

although, as was noted above, the point of moving markov to the right is so he shoots. i guess we'll see if tanguay can set up the boys as well as markov has over the last two seasons and here's hoping markov's worked on his accuracy. ;)

Markov has a hell of a shot, and using it will be beneficial.

Don't worry about missing his passing, Tanguay is just as capable, and as mentioned above, Markov feeding Andrei is another weapon.

As I have said before, our PP will be just as good without Streit, just different.

Agree entirely. You know, the part I liked about Streit best, and the part where he provided a significant improvement over Souray, was in his bringing the puck up ice. He was just really good at it 5-on-4.
