Colorado Avalanche 08-09

The forecast mags don't give the Avs much of a chance to make the playoffs.

I think this team could surprise. they have some great young guns like stasny and wolski. They have some gritty leaders Sakic and Smyth (now Tucker?) . I think if Sakic and Smyth stay healthy (they average 70+ games but last year they each missed around 30) the Avs have a shot of a playoff birth.

The big question is between the pipes: - Budaj and Raycroft both had poor performances last year.

Sakic has back surgery, will miss 10 weeks

Sakic opted for back surgery to deal with his herniated disc. He had hoped rehab, including exercises to strengthen his core muscles, would get him back on the ice. That didn't happen, so surgery was the best step. It will keep him out of the line up for at least 10 weeks. The 39 year old hopes to be back playing for Colorado before the end of the season.

It is only a matter of months I think before he will hang up his skates.
