#20 Robert Lang 2008-2009

Let's be clear: we owed Lang nothing. He played for two-thirds of one season for us, he's 38, and coming off a serious injury. He got paid $4 million for not even a full season's worth of work. I have nothing but respect for the guy, but hockey is a business, and IMO Gainey was right to move on. Lang was never going to be more than a patch job at best. If we really want to develop a long-term option at scoring center for when Plekanec goes UFA and likely leaves, we can't have Lang taking a roster spot and playing time away from someone like Ben Maxwell.

It's time to stop living hand to mouth.

i think we just tend to forget that during those stretches when lang was our best forward on the ice it wasn't that he was that great it was that we were that bad.

Agreed. It said something very sad about our team last season that a 37-year-old third-line trade acquisition was one of our best forwards.

As much as I like Lang & wouldnt mind seeing him here from a depth standpoint, your statement is dead on the money.

Gomez is going to need icetime to be effective. Plekanec is going to need icetime to bounce back. Lapierre is going to need icetime to continue to develop. That leaves very little ice time as it is for our final centre. If Maxwell hopes to get any experience this year, he'll need us NOT to sign a guy like Lang.

I agree if tangay was paid 5.75 million last season, and is now taking 2.5

Im sure we could offer lang something along the lines of 1-1.5

to use as a backup..

Even if he isnt ready at the begining of the season. As he had some great chemestry with those kostitsyn bros

that being said who knows if he is even recovered yet...

No.

Lang was not invited.

You can find the complete list off the Canadiens website.

Not that im dispelling it - lang being invited didnt make sense based on gainey's other moves and our cap situation - but isnt that list only of members currently property of the habs? I think there are some invitees who are try-outs and not on the official list.

As far as I knew that was the official list.... and I haven't heard any names that aren't on this.

Lefevbre is the only invitee that isn't a Habs pick or in the system as far as I know....

But I'm open to being wrong.

+ 1 I'd only support resigning Lang if we were going to unload Pleks 100%......for a decent return too (ie, prospect with size).
