RicochetII
I don't know where people are getting the $10 - $13M figures from in terms of leftover cap space. I've done the math from memory and from one of the salary cap pages and I can only find $4 maybe $5M available. If I'm wrong can someone explain why? It's driving me crazy because people keep saying we should get Havlat, Tanguay, etc. and I just don't see how!

When you look at what our RFAs are likely to cost and bringing up some kids to fill the roster, we are basically out of cap space.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing, it is like we have the never ending wallet in Montreal. Some fans here calculate Cap space with the same math as my wife I am afraid. We still have about 10M in cap space (NHL numbers), I think we can get Kovy or Tanguay back for about 4M to fill the second line spot, sign Lats and Kostopolous to a small contract and then trade Metro for a draft pick, put Chipchura on the forth line and then sign a speedy forth line player. I know it's not well thought out but that's what I would do... on NHL09
Telly_39_s_1
What really happened today: Gainey: Okay, so I managed to sign Spacek, Gill, Cammalleri, and Gionta. Heck, I even got Gomez and I gave up what, Higgins and a few minor league guys? This might be the best free agency period ever! Molson: Uh... that's nice, Bob, but what about our current bunch of unresistricted free agents we need to sign? Gainey: What? Who cares about them? Wave of the future, Molson! Get with the times! Molson: Are you feeling okay? Gainey rips off his mask. It was Réjan Houle all along! Houle: I'm feeling just SUPER! Houle runs off. The real Bob Gainey walks in... Gainey: Okay, so I've almost negociated a contract with Kova... um, what's with that shocked look? Molson: *stunned silence*

Kubby31
Well,ya have to admit,it looked gloom there for a bit. But,I say overall,at this time...we look pretty darn good on paper there. There's always gonna be room for improvements, but happy that at least BG was active in acquiring these skilled players. GO HABS GO... HockeyMan86
Bob needs to grab a second line center in plecs(which i do not approve of) or go after someone with a bigger frame probably antropov as much as no one likes him haha. I do not know who's left at the center position thats over 6'0 in the UFA market but as of right now we have about 10m in cap space to sign the RFA's we need and a center and i strongly stress that we need to keep 2-3m cap space for the cap drop for after next season. leafs_rock_go_mccabe
I think the State of the Habs is fine. I actually appreciated Gainey's no nonsense approach to the UFAs this time. He straight up said, "Listen, I will not handicap my ability to neogtiate with other UFAs and turn this team around by signing you all to contracts before July 1st." Would everyone have rather he'd signed the same guys again and missed out on an opportunity to get a 27 year old Cammalleri coming off of an 80+ point season with Calgary? Not me... I'm not going to miss Tanguay, Kovalev, Lang, Bouillon, Dandenault, Brisebois, or Komisarek. I will miss Koivu, and that is all... However, perhaps it was time for a changing of the guard. SpecialboyMikey
I still wish wed have kept Tnaguay, hes young and relatively cheap for a ppg player! Antropv over pleck is good!! for only about 1.5-2 mill more

I figured that either Koivu or Kovy wouldn't be back but i never figured no one would be coming back. The guys who i probably wouldn't have missed are the ones coming back. If he wasn't going to resign them he should have gotten us some high draft picks. Jokinen warranted a 1st rounder for example (and more), I'm sure Komisarek and Kovalev would have.
