The Bulldog Goaltending Thread 2008-09

I thought what with the signing of Mayer, and the possibility of a Dallas goalie prospect in Hamilton, and since we have an overabundance of goalie prospects in the system, maybe it would be a good idea to initiate a 'Goaltending' thread on the General Discussion page. (Not that I ever visit that thread  !). Hopefully we can keep this one on a professional discussion level.

I would expect Desjardins to be our #1 but with a veteran like Denis who seems to be pushing to resurrect his career it could be an interesting fight.

Oh no; not here too. :(

And here I thought this Sub Forum was going to be pleasant this year.

Yeah I thought of that :P but I have faith in you and the other regulars here......and when I've been drinking I'll only post in the Habs thread!   I do think we can keep it on an intellectual level here! ;)

seriously if you want to kill this go ahead!

With back-to-back games this weekend I would expect Desjardins to get the start tonight vs Norfolk....but then again with Marc Denis coming off the shutout win (and 3 wins in a row), Don Lever just might keep going with Denis for now.

(I keep wanting to type DANIS instead of DENIS. It's going to take a bit of time to get used to that.)

Last night...in that second period he went from a quiet night to a first star performance...nice to see some stability in net after last year being kinda all over the place. Moments of brilliance, but also some head shaking bad performances as well.

Not sure why we have gone with Denis in three straight games.....but with the way he is playing.....I hope it continues...he was dominant tonight and has been first star in 2 out of 3 games!

I have a funny feeling that the reason he is playing so much is that he is being tested to see if he can handle the load, and then carry it on in the NHL as a backup.

Which may mean a goalie move in Mtl, and then Denis back up with the big boys to backstop the #1.

So I guess what I'm saying is Halak is tradable. YIKES, I hope I'm wrong. :o

This is my theory too, which I hope is wrong for a number of reasons......it is very strange that Desjardins hasn't got a game yet......but on the other hand, Lever is usually loyal to a player performing well and Denis certainly has!!!!! It also doesn't hurt to continue our four game unbeaten streak (a team record!) to encourage our young players and give them confidence and to win back some of the fans lost last season! :D

The record is actually for longest unbeaten streak to start a season... I remember in 03/04 we had a 17 game unbeaten streak.. cant believe we didnt win it that year. I also remember winning 15-1... goood times.

Well a four game unbeaten streak is nice but Desjardins needs to play in some real games. Shoot Halak has played 2 games of the first 6 in Montreal and the Habs are unbeaten as well.

You and I both know that practice is one thing but game time is another. The back up goalie needs some playing time to stay sharp. What happens if Denis gets injured?

Exactly, it is strange that they have used him so little.....only one start.

OF other note Denis' mask is clearly a "Bulldogs" and not Habs mask.......obviously he is clear on what his role is with the organization

as most NHLers have the parent club mostly featured on the mask!

I still don't know why Desjardins is on the back burner but I am NOT complaining Denis has been as good as

anyone I've seen in the Bulldog nets so far......and that includes Price, Halak, Conklin, Fichaud and Garon......my pet theory is that the Habs are focussing on their potential D-men and forwards and having solid goaltending allows them to have confidence to develop their game.....if the young guys make mistakes Denis will back them up.......anyway great performance tonight, a well deserved shutout and first star of the game! :D :D :D :D

Desjardins has a GAA of 1.00 and a save percentage over .952 in the last 3 games (all wins). In 4 of the 5 games he has played in December he has allowed 2 goals or less (all wins).

I think Lever should stay with the hot goalie despite the fact that Denis is back with the club, or at the very least play Cedric more than he did before Denis was called up to Montreal.

If Cedric keeps playing great there will be less downside to trading Halak in 2010 at the trade deadline. From the stats it appears that Cedric has been extremely good while the Dogs are giving up 40+ shots in the games.
