maddienmike
squeze sang tempted right? Yes they were not very well known out of the Uk,and not that well known in it,but I love the stories their songs tell,it's like listening to a C&W song to new wave,I just love their lyrics, you should check them out sometime a bit dated but well worth listening to,that's why I like them the same with 10cc,I also like what Godly and Creme did after they left 10cc but they have to be listened to it's not background. maddienmike
I love music any kind but only some classical, but I think my favorite has to be rhythm and blues, although I love the blues but I love a faster beat, they didn't sing either one but I love the Mamas and Pappas,I have had a very different experience of music than most of you, because I was brought up in England. There are bands that I love now that I had never heard of until I moved here and there are bands that I know that a lot of you wouldn't have heard of,it makes me laugh when I watch MMM lists they talk of one hit wonders but that is only in NA,back in the Uk they could have had a hundred.I brought back a book for Mike from England called Uk hits there were so many bands in there that Mike has never heard of but were huge in the UK and Mike really knows his bands. One band I love is AHA if you have ever heard any of their other music beside their one hit they are amazing,I love Counting Crows and Mike and the Mechanics,I really don't know too much about todays bands although I love Sam Roberts. jenzed
I also loved the Clash one of the greatest bands to ever come out of England also the Squeeze, and UB40 like 5440, Pearl Jam,Beach boys,Guns and Roses,Bruce Springfield and millions of others, many you will never have heard of before most of you were born,I love all kinds of music not too up on the very modern ones but I love Arcade fire.My daughter once told me when she was about thirty, that the thing she was most proud of me when she was a kid was that I knew more about music than any of her friends parents,I kind of liked that. Music is food for Mike he spent years going to the Foufounes Electrique on St Catherines street saw some great bands there for next to nothing, through the eighties and nineties, wish I had been there. GO HABS GO  I like your taste in music Maddie, lot's of good bands..... i like most of the bands you mention, the Uk has produced so many great and influential bands over so many eras. I was born in '67 so was brought up with my parents listening to late fifties, and sixties music, i still love to check out bands like the Troggs, Searchers, Hermans Hermits on you tube and the list gets longer over the years. Presently watching on TV a duet with david Gray and Annie Lennox which is a very interesting combination. Did I read in another post that you attended the Cavern? Yes at the beginning of the sixties I was living in Liverpool,we would go to the Cavern in our lunch hour,it was just down the road from where I worked, they used to put bands on for the lunch time and if the people liked them they would get an evening booking, one lunch time Hermans Hermits were playing I was dancing with one of the swinging blue jeans when Peter Noon came and asked if I would tell the managers that I loved them,so I did ,I was walking down the road a couple of days later and so was Peter he stopped me to thank me because the got an evening booking. The people in the flat above mine were friends with the Beatles,I met them a couple of times at parties there, was not impressed by them. One of the best things about my time there was going to a blues club called the Sink, the membership card was a sink plug,on the walls of this club were painted covers of LP's one was of Muddy Walters the cover of his Down and Out album the other was a cover of Nina Simeon it was a great place we had lots of good bands there, no great ones but they should have been, well they were great but just not recognised as such. One of my favorite bands was a band called Blue Mink, they didn't make many records but they made one of the best songs ever called Melting Pot,with one of the best female singers ever Madeliene Bell she didn't make many records was mostly a backing singer but I loved her voice. I could spend all day writing about music even at my age,it is something that helps make life good. GO HABS GO

GO HABS GO  A woman who used to baby sit us as kids used to attend the cavern and used to tell us of all the artists who played, and the people who frequented the club. She once showed us her Cavern membership card, very tattered and hashed, but a great bit of memorabilia. What also sticks in my mind is her telling us how hot and sweaty the place was!! She also let us have a look at her collection of 45's which I was total awe off. I did once go to the cavern that exists now, but as it wasn't the original it didn't fuss me too much, it was more about being in the vicinity of where it all happened!!! Interesting to hear about your meeting with the Beatles, would love to hear more of your stories from that era Maddie, in the meantime i'm away to Google a few of the bands you metioned. Thanks for sharing.

We are very honoured. I have met a lot of famous people in my life I once had lunch with the English football team, that is like having lunch with the Canadian hockey team. The Beatles were never one of my favorite bands,I liked the Stones better a bit more raunchy, the music that is.A lot of the famous people I have met you would never have heard of,because they were not big in NA but were very big in the rest of the English speaking world and a lot are gone now I was quite young when I met them, yes I have had a very interesting life. There was also a club in Manchester where a lot of the sixties bands started it was called The Iron Door,I went to see Long John Baldry there,it was for a pilot TV show,as you all know I am only 5 ft one of the backing band lifted me onto a chair so I could talk to him, once I get started I keep remembering things that I had forgotten for years. The Troggs come from where I lived in England the singers daughter lived 2 doors down from me and the ex wife lived 3 doors down, that was in my later years,I left Liverpool back end of the sixties went back to Bristol where I was born when Jimmy Hendricks lived there although I didn't get to meet him, mores the pity, then I moved to the Salisbury Stonehenge area in the early 70's. Will tell you some more later. GO HABS GO

FirstStar
They never impressed me... I have over 250 cd's ....old classic rock (and of course blues)...no Beatles....but,I enjoy John Lennon's music for sure. Really? pound for pound they were and probably are one of the most talented bands ever. George was a chord genius, he played and knew chords most musicians didn't even know existed. Paul not only a great song writer, but probably one of the most underrated bassists. John, was a good guitarist but known more for his song writing abilities. Ringo was the closest thing to average in that band, even then, being a left handed drummer he created beats never heard before. They could all play their instruments and with the exception of Ringo, could also sing. Paul may not be known for this, but he has one of the best raspy voices in the business... "Twist and shout" anyone? They covered everything from classical, to country/werstern to heavy metal (helter skelter). If that doesn't impress you, how bout every one of their albums being incredible pieces of work. Including "let it be" and they weren't even on talking terms then... They still wrote beautiful music. Compare them to any other big band, stones, led zep, the who... They all had their "so-so" albums, Beatles never released a so-so album. With all the hits the stones released, a lot of their albums were filled with filler songs, Led Zeps last few albums kinda sucked (specially Coda) and the who, well, thy ended prematurely due to Moon's death... You can't say any of these things about the beatles. Rock and music wouldn't be what it is today without the Beatles. They were way before their time. its awesome how he played it on his lap like that Very cool, but nothing new. Some of the old blues greats use to play on their laps(mostly slide guitar). And Jeff Healey was a huge blues guitarist. Jeff brought it to another level.

FirstStar
You seem to be into a lot of 80's/90's alternative bands. You should check out The Cure and Jesus and the Mary chain. Didn't get into the Cure until I brought my (at the time gf) to one of their shows. I left the old Forum being a true fan. Jesus and Mary Chain, not a great live band... too drunk to actually finish a show. But a great band if you like feedback. There's a commercial I heard lately (car commercial) and they use the song, "just like honey" by jesus and the mary chain. Btw, they were banned from MTV in the 80's due to their name. Loved the cure and JMC,when I met the Beatles it was before their band took off,I don't dispute what good musicians they were or poets but at the time, they were full of them selves, and not the greatest people,I didn't like their early stuff, but we all have different tastes, one of the best musicians in the UK in the sixties was a guy call Roy wood no relation to Ron,he was with the Move ELO and Wizzard First Star you gave credit in an earlier post,to the Beatles for what Rock and Roll is today,I think you have to go back farther than that,to the people who influenced the Beatles, like Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters lots of blues musicians early rock and rollers, these are the people who influences today's rock, but most modern stuff sounds like pop that I hear on the radio. Most people think the sixties were the best as far as music is concerned, But I remember the first time I heard Chuck Berry,Buddy Holly and people like that,it was great. I used to make money off the records that were released in NA back then, often they were not released in the UK until some time later,I lived near a port and knew many of the local guys who were in the merchant navy, they would bring back records from the States and I would sell them to local bands so they could learn them before they were heard on British radio, yes the fifties were great too. One of my favorite records of all time is from back then it's an instrumental by Sandy Nelson called Let There be Drums,I just love the beat. First Star you should get into a conversation with Mike about the seventies and eighties,he knows as much about then as anybody I know.
