Long time broadcaster Joe Garagiola has died at 90. Garagiola began as a catcher playing for nine seasons before beginning a 57 year run as a broadcaster. A 27 year association with NBC included a stint as co-host on the "Today" show from 1969-73. He left NBC in 1988 after his contract expired.

Detroit 8 Miami 7, 11 innings. Detroit's bullpen picked where it left off in blowing an early 5-0 after Justin Verlander had taken a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Francisco Rodriguez was touched up for consecutive two out RBI doubles in the ninth. Detroit had three home runs, but two were back to back as Detroit was 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position before Ian Kinsler's RBI single in the 11th. Kinsler was the second of two runners picked off first base in the final two innings. Steven Gose was picked off trying to advance on a passed ball. Detroit jumped on Miami starter Wei-Yin Chen for five runs on misplaced fastballs.

Detroit 7 Miami 3. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had two hits and four RBI's, two came on a second inning home on a slider on the inside part of the plate and up in the strike zone. Detroit had 13 hits, but Miami starter Jose Fernandez also struck out 13 in 5 2/3 innings in a losing cause. The Tigers also left seven runners in scoring position and 10 left on base overall.

Detroit 4 New York Yankees 0. Detroit wins its home opener as George Zimmerman combines with two relievers to shut down the Yankees on three hits. Zimmerman mixed the fastball with the curveball and worked the corners with the fastball to keep New York off balance.

New York Yankees 8 Detroit 4. Yankees take advantage of Mike Pelfrey's struggle with location. Pelfrey left sinkerballs and fastball up and over the middle of the plate in surrendering home runs to Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran and a three run triple to Brian McCann.

Detroit also failed to take advantage of another bases loaded situation in the fourth inning after James McCann singled with the bases loaded earlier in the inning.

Houston 1 Detroit 0. Dallas Keuchel wins a pitchers duel shutting Detroit down on five hits in eight innings of work using two fastballs, cut fastballs, and sliders. Luke Gregerson retired the side in order in the ninth. Mike Pelfrey walked six and one of those allowed the game's only run to advance to second at that point.

Detroit 5 Houston 3. Justin Verlander shuts down Houston after the first inning in which he was reached for two home runs. Detroit turned two doubleplays but left stranded 11 runners and was 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position. They also had Nick Castellanos thrown out at third in the second inning trying to stretch an RBI double into a triple.
