Defensive lapses contributed to Detroit's downfall. Justin Upton lost flyball in the lights in the first inning for a ground rule double and two runs. That came after a stolen base. Detroit appeared to be caught guard by a sacrifice bunt forcing James McCann to throw to first after having no play at third. Camryn Maybin threw to the wrong base after a sliding catch in the sixth when he may have had a play a the plate. Jose Ramirez'a bases loaded single drives in the only run of the game in a pitcher's duel. Detroit managed only four hits against nine pitchers and its only chance was eliminated in the sixth with an over the shoulder catch by second baseman Jason Kipnis and a strikeout with the bases loaded. Curtis Granderson's home runs in the 11th and 12th innings move the Mets into a tie for the top wild card spot in the National League. Bauer walked two and plunked three batters, one came around to score and another forced in a run. Detroit benefitted from five walks three of which also came around to score. Matt Boyd shuts down Minnesota on three hits in eight innings, one of them a fastball that Robbie Gfrossman caught up with. Detroit teed off on Hector Santiago for six of their runs, three on a sinkerball that didn't sink to James McCann that reached the second deck. First game started at 2:10 P.M. The second will start at 8:10 P.M. Detroit 1 Minnesota 1, Twins batting in the bottom of the third inning with one out and a runner at first. Aggressive base running and Minnesota miscues game Detroit the go ahead runs in the sixth. Justin Upton singled and went to second on a error. Erick Aybar singled home Upton and went to second on the throw to the plate. Aybar went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Detroit benefitted from three walks, a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, and wild pitch for two first inning runs. Duffy served up three gopher ball to account for four of Detroit's runs. Detroit also shot itself in the foot in the third inning after reloading the bases after a grand slam home run by Victor Martinez when Andrew Romine tried to bunt his way on and dribbled into an easy force out at the plate. Cleveland's bullpen beats Detroit's as starter Corey Kluber left after four innings with tightness in his groin. Detroit starter Buck Farmer gave four of Cleveland's runs and the bullpen once again failed to give Detroit a chance though J.D. Martinez was charged with an eighth inning error that allowed Cleveland's final run to score. Jose Iglesias watched a slider catch the insider corner for strike three leaving the bases loaded in the fourth. Justin Verlander shuts down a makeshift Cleveland lineup the night after clinching the AL Central on four hits in 7 2/3 innings of work striking out 12. Detroit's offense jumped on Mike Clevenger who lasted two innings and 43 pitches for five of their runs and a longball. The bullpen allowed six Detroit runs an two homers. Atlanta is able to wear down Detroit's bullpen for three runs after starter Jordan Zimmerman pitched four innings allowing only three hits. But one of those was a hanging slider that found the seats in the fourth to account for Atlanta's first two runs. Detroit also hurt itself swinging at pitches out of the strike zone and missed a chance in the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs. Miguel Cabrera swung at a slider out of the zone for strike three and Dansby Swanson turned J. D. Martinez's hard smash into an inning ending double play. Julio Teheran combines with two relievers to shut down Detroit on five hits getting hitters to chase pitches out of the strike zone and making a first inning sacrifice fly stand up. Detroit missed a first and second chance in the second inning on a strike out and a line out. In the eighth, with a runner at second, Ian Kinsler lined into a double play. Detroit finished the season watching two pitches cross the strike zone. This was a team that was too reliant on the longball and could not manufacture runs.
