In a 5-4 win over San Diego, Los Angeles pulled off a ninth inning triple play on an attempted sacrifice bunt. With runners on first and second, the Padres' Jesus Guzman was sent up to bunt the runners over to second and third. On a pitch close to Guzman the ball hit his bat and landed in foul territory, but came back into fair territory. Guzman, being stunned at what happened, never left the batter's and both runners, figuring the ball was foul, never left their respective bases. Catcher A. J. Ellis pounced on the ball and threw to third , who threw to second for another force place. The second baseman made the throw to first to complete one of the more bizarre and ridiculously easy triple plays seen in the majors. Padres manager Bud Black was ejected from the game over this play.
