Hernandez had two years and $40.5 million remaining on his contract, but that apprarently will be replaced by the new contract which runs through 2019. ESPN's Buster Olny has reported the figure to be $28 million per season. On top of the Prince Fielder signing, it's a bit ridiculous. The extension keeps Verlander in Detroit through 2019. CANADIENS27 Posted April 2, 2013 Report Share Posted April 2, 2013 Justin Verlander shuts out Minnesota on two hits over five innings and 91 pitchers over five innings as Detroit wins its season opener 4-2. Drew Smyly gave up two runs and three hits in 1 1/3 innings. Phil Coke got the save. In all, the Detroit pitching staff struck out 12 hitters and stranded 12 runners.
