C.C. Sabbathia and two relievers shut down Detroit on eight hits, four after Sabathia left after the seventh inning to give the Yankees a 7-0 win. Justin Verlander took the loss giving up three runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings. One was home run on a hanging slider to Jayson Nix for a two run homer which came after a fastball over the plate to Francisco Cervelli for an RBI double.

The bullpen eliminated any chance Detroit might have had by giving up two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Relievers need to get batters out to give the team a chance to get back into the game if the starter has a bad outing or to hold the lead once the starter leaves. Until Detroit straightens out this problem, they will be in for a long season.

In a game that featured 40 strikeouts, 21 by Detroit to tie a franchise record, an RBI infield single against a drawn in infield by Brayan Pena gave Detroit a 2-1 win over Seattle in 14 innings. Max Scherzer and Felix Hernandez each went 8 innings and struck out 12 batters, a first since 2003. Detroit would get only seven hits while Seattle got 11. Drew Smyly got the win in relief and Joaquin Benoit got the save. The final out occured when Seattle's Justin Smoak was gunned down at the plate trying to score on a double to right field by Dustin Ackly.

A lack of timely hitting combined with an ineffective bullpen sends Detroit to an 8-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The Tigers left 5 runners in scoring position and were 2 for 12 in that category. They have been 4 for 38 this week. The bullpen gave five runs in the eighth inning aided in large part by a miscommunication between Austin Jackson and Matt Tuiasosopo in left center field. Starter Anibal Sanchez took the loss.
