Max Scherzer and three relievers combine to stop Kansas City 7-5. Scherzer got the win despite giving up five runs on seven hits in five innings. Four of them in the third inning on five straight hits and a long sacrifice fly. Jose Valverde pitched aperfect ninth for the save. He showed up this year 15 pounds lighter. We'll see if he can maintain the lighter and whether weight was contributing factor last season. Detroit would retake the lead with a four run fourth.

Detroit's bullpen comes apart once again wasting an outstanding performance by Justin Verlander giving one run in the eighth and five in the 10th in an 8-3 loss to Kansas City. Verlander left after the seventh inning with cracked skin on his right thumb. Bruce Rondon made his major league debut and surrendered the tying run on two hits and struggled with the strike zone.

Rondon gave up a leadoff single to Billy Butler who left for pinch runner Jarrod Dyson. Dyson stole second when Rondon failed to keep him close to the first base bag. Dyson advanced to third on a ground ball back to the mound when Rondon forgot there was a runner on second, otherwise, he had Dyson trapped off second. Dyson scored on a sacrifice fly. Rondon will need to learn to hold runners and look the runner back to the bag. He would leave after allowing another hit in the ninth.

Phil Coke pitched the 10th and allowed three walks, one intentional which came after a wild pitch that allowed runners to advance to second and third. Another walk forced in the first the run of the inning before Coke allowed a grand slam home run to Billy Gordon.

Reliever Bruce Rondon gave two runs in the seventh and got only one out.
