Another bullpen failure results in a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay in 10 innings. Yunel Escobar's single in the 10th off Bruce Rondon won it after one out singles by James Loney and Wil Myers. Pinch runner Sam Fuld scored the winning run. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Rondon had relieved Drew Smyly who pitched a perfect ninth. It might come off as sour grapes since Rondon gave up the winning run, but Smyly has shown to be capable successfully pitching in long relief.

The real culprit however, was Detroit's inability to score after the third inning when they got all three of their runs, especially in the late innigs. Only Seattle has scored fewer runs in the late innings.

Scherzer is now 11-0. You just watch - Leyland will have him pitch on the last day before the All-Star Game. The Tigers bullpen is a mess, and the bats have gotten cold outside of Cabrera, Peralta and at times Fielder. Martinez is more unlucky than anything else.

Scherzer is 12-0. Benoit and Smyly have been the only two consistent relievers. Why would you relieve Smyly after one inning when he's proven to be capable of several innings in relief? Fielder has been better against lefthanders and certainly against Tampa Bay there was no hitting from the bottom third of the lineup.

Lack of hitting and a rough fourth inning for Rick Porcello results in a 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay. Porcello worked 6 innings allowing three runs on eight hits and struggled with location in the fourth inning allowing two runs on four straight singles and bases loaded walk. An inning ending linedrive double kept it from being worse. Detroit's only offense was a hanging curveball to Miguel Cabrera which landed in the fish tank behind the centerfield fence 424 feet from homeplate and plucked out by a Detroit fan in attendence. Detroit would waste a bases loaded no out chance in the seventh.

Jose Alverez struggles with location allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in three innings of work with three walks in an 8-3 loss to Toronto. Alverez went to 3-0 counts three times in the third inning getting the ball up in the strike zone. Luke Putkonen didn't do much better allowing three runs on three hits in four innings. An RBI double by Omar Infante was Detroit's only hit with runners in scoring postition. Detroit's other two runs came on solo home runs by Fielder in the fourth and Infante in the ninth.

Doug Fister overcomes a rocky first two innings in which he was basically all over the place when he got shelled for six runs and six hits. He would recover and retire 13 of the next 14 hitters and allow one more hit in his remaining four innings of work. Toronto's Chien-Ming Wang, however, would not make it of out the second inning allowing six runs to erase a 4-0 lead. Toronto would tie the game on a two out walk and a two run homer by Colby Rasmus. Torii Hunter drove the winning run in the eighth on an infield single to give Detroit a 7-6 win over Toronto.

Cincinnati's Homer Bailey no hits San Francisco in a 3-0 win. Bailey becomes the third Reds pitcher with at least two joing JIm Maloney and Johnny Vander Meer who threw two consecutive no hitters. He also threw the previous no-hitter in the majors when he no hit Pittsburgh joing Nolan Ryan in accomplishing this feat. He had a perfect game until he walked Gregor Blanco to start the seventh. Blanco would preserve Bailey's no hitter when he tried to advance to third on a high hopper and got thrown out on a ball on which Bailey was slow in covering first base. That would turn a probable base hit into a fielder's choice.

Justin Verlander pitches seven shutout innings allowing three singles in an 11-1 over Toronto. It was Verlander's fisrt win since June 7 and his ninth win against five losses. It was also his first start in Toronto since his second career no-hitter on May 7, 2011. Miguel Cabrera was kept out with a sore back and Omar Infante was out with a bruised shin.

Rick Porcello pitches seven innings allowing no runs on five hits, two of them one singles in the sixth and combines with two relievers to shutout Cleveland 7-0. Porcello could have ended the sixth with a doubleplay, but his throw to second was high allowing Michael Brantley to reach on a fielder's choice. Carlos Santana flied out deep to the warning track in center field to end that threat. Al Alburquerque and Bruce Rondon finished up. Rondon struggled a bit in the ninth, but looked a little better.

Detroit continued its trend of jumping on Cleveland getting three runs after three innings and three more in the fifth.

Anibal Sanchez returns from the disabled list to pitch five innings allowing one run on three hits in a 9-4 win over Cleveland. Phil Coke allowed one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings and Darin Downs surrendered a two run homer to Ryan Raburn in the ninth. It looks like Raburn found a hitting coach in Cleveland.

Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco wouldn't make it out of the fourth inning surrendering seven runs on ten hits including consecutive home runs from Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder in the third inning. There were also two doubles and a single in the four run third. Detroit has now won 11 of the last 14 meetings with Cleveland and have outscored the Tribe 16-4 in the first two games of this series.

Doug Fister gets too many pitches up in the strike and over the plate in allowing three of Cleveland's four home runs. Fister would allow six runs on six hits in six innings with three walks, but was not involved in the decision. The loss would go to Al Alburqurque who gave the goahead runs in the eighth on Cleveland's other home run - a curveball that Michael Brantley was waiting for. That wasted a Detroit comeback from a 6-1 deficit when they scored two in the seventh and three in the eighth on a three run homer by Torii Hunter on a belt high curveball. MIguel Cabrera sent a bomb well up into the leftfield seats to open the scoring. Detroit would lose 9-6.

Victor Martinez's two run double in the tenth inning after two out walks to Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder drive in the goahead runs in a 4-2 win over Cleveland. Max Scherzer allowed two runs, both on a two run single by Lonnie Chisenhall after one out singles and a double steal, on seven hits in seven innings. Detroit tied it in the fourth and their bullpen struggled a bit but was able to strand the winning run at second in the ninth.

Steve Swisher would prove to be the goat for Cleveland when he nubbed a grounder that appeared to be staying foul but started rolling toward fair territory again and stayed at home plate. Catcher Brayan Pena picked up the ball when it rolled back onto the third baseline and ran over to tag Swisher out. Swisher would not be smiling in the 10th when he slipped rounding third on a two out hit. Joaquin Benoit would get the final out for his seventh save.

Chicago White Sox light up the scoreboard and Detroit's pitching staff for 11 runs and 23 hits in an 11-4 win over Detroit. 10 of the runs and 15 hits came in the final two innings. The White Sox got seven of those runs and 9 hits in the eighth inning, two of them home runs. Justin Verlander pitched 7+ innings allowing 5 runs on 12 hits. The White Sox entered the game at 34-52. Only Houston has a worse record in the American League.

Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and Victor Matinez had three hits each to lead a 15 hit attact in an 8-5 win over Chicago White Sox. Rick Porcello pitched six innings allowing three runs on seven hits, two of them on a two run homer by Conor Gillaspie in the fourth. Detroit's bullpen struggle once again as Bruce Rondon was inconsistent at best in the seventh allowing a gopher ball to Gordon Beckham and a double to Alexi Ramirez, walked one batter and uncorked consecutive wild pitches. Drew Smyly set down the Sox in order in the eighth and Joaquin Benoit finished the game despite walking two batters.

Detroit loses 2 of 3 games to a Chicago White Sox team that is the second worst in the American League and third worst in the majors when Anibal Sanchez leaves his last pitch of the day over the plate for Josh Phegley to deposit in the left field seats for a grand slam home run in the sixth inning. Reliever Phil Coke would surrender a gopher ball Alejandro De Aza in the eighth to give the Sox an eventual 6-3 win over Detroit.

Sanchez gave up five runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings and Luke Putkonen got tossed for throwing behind Alexei Ramirez. Manager Jim Leyland also got an early shower.

Detroit scores all of its runs in the first two innings, five in the first and two in the second enroute to a 7-2 win over Texas. Doug Fister pitched six innings allowing two runs on eight hits. Bruce Rondon easily had his besting outing pitching 1 1/3 innings, throwing 10 pitches, all of them for strikes by getting his curveball and slider over for strikes. Drew Smyly also pitched 1 1/3 innings and Joaquin Benoit fanned Nelson Cruz to end the game.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum no hits San Diego in a 9-0 win. Lincecum threw 148 pitches with 13 strikeouts and four walks. Hunter Spence's diving catch of a line to end the eighth inning is the closest San Diego comes to getting a hit. It was Lincecum's first career no-hitter and the first for a pitcher with multiple Cy Young awards. Lincecum' recorded 29 swings and misses, the most since Randy Johnson in 2000. He also became the second losing pitcher in a no-hitter to throw one in his next start.

Texas hands Max Scherzer his first loss of the season in a 7-1 win over Detroit. Scherzer pitched six innings allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out six. He was sharp through the first three innings and started leaving pitches over the plate. Nelson Cruz lined the first one down the leftfield line and scored on a sacrifice fly. After a two out walk, Mitch Moreland sent another pitch left over the plate for a two run homer to the opposite field in left.

Detroit would have difficulty solving Derek Holland's slider getting only one run despite having runners in scoring position with one out in three of the first four innings. That lone run would come on a two out single by rookie Hernan Perez after Brayan Pena had hit into a double play. Al Albuquerque would allow the final three Texas runs in the ninth. Scherzer, however, got hit on the left wrist by a linedrive off the bat of Jurickson Profar. X-rays taken after the game were negative.

Justin Verlander takes a no hitter into the seventh inning in a 5-0 win over Texas. The only hit Verlander allowed was a two out double by Mitch Moreland into the gap in right center field gap. Verlander left after the seventh with a tight quadrocep in the right leg. The only other Ranger hit was a single off Drew Smyly in the eighth. Joaquin Benoit got the final two outs, both on punchouts.

Detroit would get only seven hits. However, the first three were a 2-2 hanging curveball to Torii Hunter in the first that found the leftfield seats in the first, a fourseam fastball to Victor Martinez that located the Texas bullpen in the third, and Jhonny Peralta followed with an opposite field home run to right on a pitch up in the strike zone.
