CANADIENS27
Billy Butler's RBI single in the first inning provided the only run of the game in a 1-0 Kansas City win over Detroit. Anibal Sanchez would strand runners over the next five innings, but Detroit got only two hits in the game. They would get three balls to center field with only outs to show for them. CANADIENS27
Justin Verlander struggles with control in allowing six runs on eight hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-5 loss to Kansas City. The winning came in the sixth on a Mike Moustakas home run to right as Verlander failed for the seventh time in 21 starts to make it into the sixth inning. Detroit would also squander scoring chances in the eighth and ninth innings as they continue to struggle to score in the late innings.
CANADIENS27
Solo shots by Miguel Cabrera and Andy Dirks and solid pitching by Detroit give the Tigers a 4-1 win over Kansas City to salvage one game of the three games series. Cabrera's came on a pitch five inches inside and down the leftfield line 387 feet from home. Dirks' went to dead centerfield over the 410 sign just out of the reach of Jarrod Dyson. Detroit would score two more runs in the late innings for a change, both on sacrifice flies by Brayan Pena. Doug Fister went the first six innings and allowed only one run on six hits. Drew Smyly, Bruce Rondon, and Joaquin Benoit allowed only hit and that runner was erased in a double play in the ninth.

The White Sox chipped in with a season high four errors, two in the fourth inning when Detroit scored three runs, and Hector Santiago added five walks. Jhonny Peralta had an RBI single in the fourth and a solo shot in the sixth. Porcello, after a shaky first inning in which the Sox loaded the bases, improved his record to 7-6. Prince Fielder started the scoring with a three run homer in the first that traveled 409 feet. Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter added solo shots. CANADIENS27
Justin Verlander struggles with mechanics in a 7-4 loss to the White Sox allowing 7 runs on 11 hits in six innings of work. CANADIENS27
Doug Fister shuts down Philadelphia on three hits over eight innings allowing an unearned run in the third inning which came after rookie second baseman Hernan Perez booted a ground ball in a 2-1 win over the Phillies. Detroit would also get timely from the bottom third of the lineup, in this case a trio that entered the game with a combined .183 average and .113 against lefthanders. The Tigers would get all the support Fister would need on a two run double by Alex Avila who rifled a hanging changeup into the gap in leftcenter after Phillies lefthander Cole Hamels blew two fastballs by Avila. He is now batting .187 for the season and entered the White Sox game against Danks with a 1-for-39 performance against lefthanders.

CANADIENS27
Detroit jumps on Philadelphia starter Raul Valdes who wasn't fooling anyone for 8 runs and 10 hits in the first two innings enroute to a 10-0 win over the Phillies. Valdes would last 3 2/3 innings allowing a total of 9 runs on 12 hits including home runs to Miguel Cabrera after one too many 87 MPH pitches and a 75 changeup to Matt Tuiasosopo who sent over the centerfield fence for a three run shot. Both home runs came in the first inning when Detroit got five runs. Max Scherzer became the majors' first 15 game winner running his record to 15-1 pitching six innings allowing only one hit, a double to center by Darin Ruf on a fastball Scherzer missed location on. Al Alburquerque and Evan Reed completed the shutout.
CANADIENS27
Poor fielding, poor decisions, and an inability to locate the strike zone allow Detroit to score three runs in the fifth and eight in the sixth after Philadelphia had taken a 3-0 lead. Detroit would win 12-4. The first bad decision came when Phillies firstbaseman Darin Ruf took the out at first when he should have thrown home. That allowed the tying run to score in the fifth when Victor Martinez slid in under the tag. The sixth inning could just as easily be placed on the "Good Laugh" thread. Detroit got eight runs on only two hits, three walks, two with the bases loaded, and three errors. The first error came on a throwing error by pitcher Jake Diekman on bunt when he should have taken the out at first. The second error came on a dropped fly ball by Don Kelly which allowed the go ahead run to score. The third was on an errant throw by first baseman Darin Ruf on an attempted force at home. The two hits were a bunt single and Jhonny Peralta's grand slam home run into the left field seats. The one bright spot for Philadelphia was they turned three double plays, two againt Prince Fielder. Miguel Cabrera would get tossed for arguing strikes and Jim Leyland would get his second thumb in three weeks, both at the hands of the same umpire. Bruce Rondon would allow one run on two hits, a line drive double and a single. Kevin Frandsen would bail Rondon out by getting thrown out at second trying to stretch his single into a double. CANADIENS27
Alex Avila's sixth inning grand slam home run on a room service 2-1 fastball from Stephen Strasburg into the rightfield seats gives Detroit a 5-1 win over Washington. It was a pitch Strasburg wanted away and ruined an otherwise outstanding pitching performance. Anibal Sanchez pitched seven innings allowing one run on five hits despite in his words needing to work on his command getting first pitch strikes. Newly acquired relief pitcher Jose Veras made his debut retiring all three batters he faced in the eighth. Joaquin Benoit finished up allowing one hit. CANADIENS27
Detroit sends minor leaguers outfielder Avisail Garcia and pitcher Brayan Villerreal to Boston as part of a three team trade to acquire shortstop Jose Iglesias. Jhonny Peralta might not be available since his name has been linked to the Biogenesis scandal. Boston then traded Garcia along with three other minor leaguers, pitchers J.B. Wendelken, Francelis Montas, infielder Cleuluis Rondon to the Chicago White Sox for pitcher Jake Peavy.
CANADIENS27
Justin Verlander pitches six innings allowing one run on four hits, despite struggling with command issues, especially his fastball in a 10-1 win over Washington. Verlander was able to escape the first inning in which the first three batters reached base allowing only a sacrice fly to a team has been nonexistent all season. Detroit would get two five run innings to put the game out of reach. Torii Hunter led the hitting attack going 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. CANADIENS27
Doug Fister shuts down Chicago White Sox on one run and seven hits over eight innings in a 2-1 win. Fister had good command of his curve ball and sinker and was able to get 13 groundball outs. The defense helped out with three double plays. Detroit got its runs on an RBI single by newly acquired Jose Inglesias who might be taking over for Jhonny Peralta and a solo shot by Austin Jackson on a belthigh hanging screwball that ended up in the Detroit bullpen. Chicago got its run in the sixth on a two out double by Alexi Ramirez and a single by Alex Rios. Rios bailed Fister out further trouble by foolishly trying to advance and getting trapped between first and second when Prince Fielder cut off the throw from centerfield.
