Detroit scores four runs in the ninth against closer Chris Perez who couldn't get anyone out to pull out a 4-2 win over Cleveland. Prince Fielder led off the ninth with a double and scored on a single by Victor Martinez. Andy Dirks walked and Alex Avila followed with a three run homer on a belt high fastball that got a little too much of the outside part of the plate. The ninth inning rally wasted an outstanding effort by starter Corey Kluber who pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing six hits and some highlight reel defense by the Indians.

Anibal Sanchez started and went 7 2/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits, striking out 11 and walking two. Al Albuquerque got the win in relief to even his record at 2-2. Joaquin Benoit pitched the ninth for his 13th save. The home run brought Avila's season batting average to .199.

A five run fifth inning gives Detroit a 5-1 win over Cleveland. Cleveland starter Justin Masterson aided Detroit's big inning by plunking Ramon Santiago on a bunt attempt and Victor Martinez in the right foot both on sliders, the first which was yanked too far inside. That was followed by an RBI groundout that tied the game. The second hit batter extended the inning for Don Kelly who sent a 1-1 four seam fastball, that Masterson wanted to bust Kelly inside on but got it over the plate, into the rightfield seats to highlight the inning. Miguel Cabrera's double off the centerfield wall gave Detroit a 2-1 lead.

Justin Verlander made an adjustment and reverted to past form hitting the radar gun at 100 MPH on two occassions and essentially had command of his pitches throughout the eight innings he worked alllowing one run on four hits striking out seven and not issuing any walks. Cleveland's lone run came in the second inning on RBI groundout by Ryan Raburn. That came after a double by Andrubal Cabrera and a single by Michael Brantley. Cabrera aided Verlander by getting caught in a rundown between third and home for the first out. Verlander would escape a two on no out situation in the sixth by getting Nick Swisher on a deep fly to right. He then blew a 100 MPH fastball by Jason Kipnis for strike two before putting him away with an 84 MPH changeup. Verlander got the third out on another 100 MPH fastball that Andrubal Cabrera grounded out on.

Verlander improved his record to 12-8.

Prince Fielder's two run double in the top of the 14th inning gives Detroit a 6-5 win over Cleveland. Fielder's double came on a pitch that got too much of the outside part of the plate that Fielder sent into the gap in leftcenter field. Detroit had taken a 4-3 lead in the eighth on Miguel Cabrera's 32nd home run on a 96 MPH fastball down Broadway that was sent 449 feet to dead center off starter Danny Salazar who had struck out Cabrera the previous three times. Cleveland would tie the game in the bottom half on consecutive doubles and an RBI groundout against. If you're wondering, consecutive doubles don't always score a run. Detroit's bullpen would hold up the rest of the way until Joaquin Benoit was reached in the bottom of the 14th on a run on two hits. Doug Fister pitched six innings allowing two runs on seven hits.

Detroit completes a four game sweep of Cleveland with a 10-3 win. Detroit would score six times in the third inning when Cleveland starter Zach McAllister experienced control problems in the third walking four and allowing three hits including consecutive doubles by Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez. The one bright for Cleveland came after Terry Francona had used up his bullpen and brought in Ryan Raburn who pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck Matt Tuiasosopo with an 89 MPH fastball.

Max Scherzer pitched seven innings allowing two runs on four hits to become the first pitcher to start 17-1 since Roger Clemens and topping the 16-2 starts of Bobo Newsom in 1940 and Denny McLain in 1968 who was also the last 30 game winner in the majors.

New York ends Detroit's 12 game winning with a 4-3 win in 10 innings on Brett Gardner's two out bases loaded single. All that came after a game tying two run homer in the ninth by Miguel Cabrera against closer Mariano Rivera. Rivera was pitching Cabrera inside trying to force him to hit to the deepest part of the park and succeeded more than he intended. The at-bat started by Cabrera fouling off two pitches, one of which firstbaseman Lyle Overbay couldn't quite reach, a play that would have ended the game. After the count reached 2-2, Cabrera fouled two inside pitches off his knee causing him to limp around the batter's box and stretching his legs. Rivera then left a fastball over the plate at the knees, one that he wanted further inside, that Cabrera sent into the netting over the centerfield wall 410 feet from home plate.

Al Albuquerque took the loss for Detroit. Austin Jackson had four hits for Detroit, including three doubles, the last which preceeded Cabrera's blast to dead center.

To add to the above post: Anibal Sanchez pitches seven innings allowing two runs on four hits, one of them a two run homer by Michael Overbay on oan offspeed pitch he was sitting on. Yankees starter Phil Hughes failed to make it past the fifth inning for ninth time in 22 starts and allowed two of Detroit's three home runs. Cabrera's homer came on a pitch that looked like it was going to hit his knee again. Cabrera and Torii Hunter had three hits apiece and Austin Jackson added a first inning triple to his home run.

Missed opportunities and a lack of command of Verlander's fastball early lead to a 5-4 loss to New York. Detroit would strand 10 runners against a struggling Andy Petite who lasted 4 1/3 innings and 12 total. Verlander would allow two home runs, one of them Alex Rodriguez's 648th career blast and the other to Alfonso Soriano. Austin Jackson would also commit a baserunning gaffe when he was already past second when Brett Gardner robbed Torii Hunter of extra bases by hauling in his long drive and firing to first to complete an inning ending double play when Jackson inexplicably stopped in the basepath after retouching second.

Detroit would tie the game in the ninth on home runs by Miguel Cabrera and Victor Marrtinez, both on sliders that were up in the strike zone against Mariano Rivera, who was saddled with his third consecutive blown save. Cabrera's homer came on a slider that also found too much of the outer half of the plate and Martinez's was on a slider down the middle and landed in the second deck in right field. Brayan Pena homered for Detroit in the eighth.

The final blow came when Jose Vera served up a gopher ball, a roomservice fastball to light hitting Brett Gardner who launched it into the upper deck in right field.

Chris Sale shuts down Detroit on two runs on nine hits in a complete game 6-2 win over Detroit, one a home run by Miguel Cabrera on the first pitch he saw. Doug Fister develop wildness in the fourth inning when he issued consecutive two out walks and uncorked two wild pitches in a span of six to score Chicago's first run. A leadoff double in the fifth was followed by four straight one out singles for three runs. Fister would allow four runs on eight hits in six innings. Al Albuquerque allowed the White Sox's final two runs in the eighth.

Alejandro De Aza's RBI single in the 11th inning allows the White Sox to overcome three errors by Shortstop Alexi Ramirez and gives Chicago a 4-3 win over Detroit. The Sox were able to take advantage of Max Scherzer's one bad inning when they reached him for three runs on four hits. Scherzer started the inning by plunking Gordon Beckham in the elbow and walked Ramirez. Former Tiger Avisail Garcia laced a two out triple down the right field line and scored on an errant throw to third by Omar Infante.

Ramirez's second error put runners at first and third allowed the tying run to score on a single by Brayan Pena in the eighth inning. Detroit also failed to take advantage of opportunities leaving 12 runners on base, including two in the 11th when winning pitcher Addison Reed knocked down Miguel Cabrera's ground ball that was fielded by Ramirez who threw out a sliding Cabrera at first.

i'm really disappointed:

in each league there's one team with a worse record than the Chicago team. I mean if you're going for worst then get there. :P

Lack of clutch hitting by the White Sox, who got 14 hits and five walks, allows Detroit to come back from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 6-4 win. Chicago would leave 15 runners stranded for the game. Starter Rick Porcello was roughed up for three runs and four hits in the first inning and would need 40 pitches to get out of the first inning. That accounted for him being lifted after six innings allowing an additional seven hits. Closer Joaquin Benoit was forced to strand two runners in each of the eighth and ninth innings, getting two punchouts in the eighth and a groundball in the ninth after the first reached. They would be sacrificed to second and third before Benoit was able to work out of trouble.

Detroit tied the game in the third on a three run homer by Miguel Cabrera on a slider up in the strike zone and too much of the inside part of the plate, a pitch Chicago starter John Danks wanted further inside. The go ahead runs were scored in the sixth on a RBI single by Omar Infante and a two run throwing error by third baseman Conor Gillaspie.

Prince Fielder's two run homer in the first, his first since July 24, leads Detroit to a 4-1 win over Kansas City in the first of a five game series, despite atrocious baserunning. In the third, Andy Dirks led off with a double and was caught in a rundown on a groundball back to the mound by Torii Hunter. Hunter would be doubled off first after rounding the bag too far. This episode would a candidate for the "Good Laugh" thread. In the sixth, Brayan Pena took too wide a turn at first after a single and was caught off the bag.

RBI singles by Hunter and Miguel Cabrera accounted for Detroit's other two runs. Anibal Sanchez pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing one run on seven hits. Kansas City stole three bases but were done in by missed scoring opportunities going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Philadelphia has fired manager Charlie Manuel amidst a 4-19 skid and are 53-67 for the season and have named Ryne Sandburg interim manager. The surprise is that it's taken this long into the season for the first firing to occur. An even bigger surprise is Houston hasn't fired their manager considering they have a major league worst 39-81 record and on their way to having the worst record for three seasons running.

Kansas City shuts down Detroit on one and six hits in a day-night doubleheader sweep, two of them by Miguel Cabrera. Danny Duffy took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Cabrera lined a single off the thirdbaseman's glove. Justin Verlander's only mistake was hanging curveball to Eric Hosmer who drilled it over the Detroit bullpen into the leftfield seats. Consecutive doubles in the seventh provided what proved to be the winning run. Detroit's only run of the doubleheader was a pinchhit home run by Ramon Santiago.

Jose Alverez pitched 5 2/3 innings in the nightcap well enough to win for Detroit, but Hosmer provided all the offense Royals starter James Shields would need when he hammered a hanging changeup into the right field seats. Detroit would squander two scoring chances in the nightcap.

Miguel Cabrera's leadoff home run to right field over the 330 foot sign in in the bottom of the ninth gives Detroit a 6-5 win over Kansas Cityto even the five game series at 2 games each. The home run came on 3-1 pitch that was belthigh and caught too much of the plate enabled Detroit to overcome a shaky bullpen that twice gave up game tying runs and starter Doug Fister who allowed three runs to tie the game after being staked to a 3-0 lead. The the fourth inning saw the ejections of manager Jim Leyland and catcher Brayabn Pena for arguing a wild pitch which replays showed actually hit Alcides Escobar's bat after it hit the dirt. Pena was slow to react allowing Chrius Getz to advance all the way to third. The umpires may have missed the call, but you've got to keep playing.

Max Scherzer becomes the major leagues' first 18 game winner pitching eight innings allowing two runs on five hits in a 6-3 win over Kansas City to take the series 3-2. Sherzer's only struggle came in the seventh when he allowed two runs and becomes the first pitcher with an 18-1 start since Roger Clemens in 2001. Joaquin Benoit served a leadoff gopher ball to Billy Butler in the ninth.

Miguel Cabrera added his 40th home in the first inning and became the third player since 1921 to have 40 home runs, 120 RBIs, and batting at .350 joing Babe Ruth and Jimmy Foxx.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster has been suspended five games for plunking Alex Rodriguez in the elbow. Dempster had thrown inside three times earlier in the at-bat in which Rodriguez was hit and claimed the pitch was in retaliation for an off field incident. That might be a little hard to believe.

Location proves to be a problem for Rick Porcello as he gets roughed up for five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 6-3 loss to Minnesota. Justin Morneau led the Twins with four hits, including a home run on a changeup he was sitting on and golfed it into the right field seats. Phil Coke continued his struggles against lefthanded hitters giving up one of Morneau's hits and later getting sent down to Toledo. Detroit would also strand two runners in each of the last three innings. In the ninth, Miguel Cabrera struck out on a 96 MPH fastball to end the game.
