New Jersey In Need Of Help? Brodeur To Undergo Surgery

Martin Brodeur's assault on the record book will be put on hold as the Devils' goalkeeper will undergo surgery to repair torn bicep tendons and will be out of the lineup for up to four months.

''This Thursday morning, Martin Brodeur will undergo surgery to repair the distal bicep in the left elbow," Devils president, CEO and general manager Lou Lamriello said in a statement.

''We will not have any further comment or update until after the surgery is complete.''

His surgery will be performed by Dr. Steven Beldner, with the assistance of team orthopedist, Dr. Barry Fisher.

Lamoriello told the Bergen Record that Brodeur is expected to make a full recovery and should return before the end of the regular season.

Brodeur suffered the injury during the second period of Saturday's Devils victory over the Atlanta Thrashers with what was described as a "bruised elbow." He left the arena without talking to the media and was listed as day-to-day by the team.

Kevin Weekes got the start for the Devils in Monday's loss to the Sabres ending Brodeur's treak of 51 consecutive regular-season starts. Weekes is expected to see the majority of action in Brodeur's absence.

"When you have a Marty Brodeur as a goaltender and he's out for a significant amount of time sure it certainly gives you a knot in your stomach, but you have move forward," Devils coach Brent Sutter told the Bergen Record. "I'm confident and I trust the players here that they will do what needs to be done to move forward."

Brodeur, a three-time Stanley Cup champion is now stuck on 544 career victories, meaning he needs just seven victories to tie Patrick Roy's record of 551 wins. He is also five shutouts short of Terry Sawchuk's career mark for shutouts with 103.

There are possibilities given that Clemmensen is useless and Weeks is extremely questionable however I cannot see Montreal showing much interest in what New Jersey would be willing to part with. New Jersey would be better advised to trade with Philadelphia for Biron as a change in scenery may revive his performance while costing them little.

dont really see the point... there are other teams that have a goalie that is more experienced then halak. not hating on halak or anything but Dwayne Roloson, or Nikolai Khabibulin are higher on the list then halak, but then again i guess it all depends on what they are looking for, a quick fix or planning future as well.

True but they come with a price tag. Halak would be a cheap quality fix at the moment. Hmmm, who can we get from them.

very true, i forgot to add that in. the way i see it, all depends on what they are planning to do after broduer gets back. halak could step in after he is gone, or like i said are they just looking for a quick fix. they might as well stay with Weeks and just rough it out untill broduer comes back.

i dont know who we could get for halak anyways...

No one comes to mind. That means that no one is worth getting and therefore Halak stays with us. Problem solved. Now I have to bill the Habs for my GM services that I just rendered.

I was about to close this thread, but I can kind of see a point to it.

And, good sir, is there any point to the Gaborik, Sundin, and Kovalchuk threads from a, "Is anything actually going to happen" perspective? :D:lol:;)

And, come on, at least let's wait and see if Eklund drops any bombs regarding Halak to New Jersey by tomorrow!

Well I saw "Brodeur to Undergo Surgery" on the main page of the forum in General Habs, thinking some new member posted in the wrong location. Then I saw it was in Hot Stove and you were the author, it took me a minute to realize "ah there could be trade rumours". However, I did move your subtitle into the first slot of the title just to make the point of it more obvious.

And I personally have no problems with threads like this. As I said in "Welcome to the Forum" this subforum is a work in progress, so it may turn out threads like this generate interesting discussion.

Yes, hopefully so! It is something new to discuss for the time being. I, too, doubt very much that Montreal will make any move to assist New Jersey in the goaltending department as I can't really think of who New Jersey has that would help Montreal, but perhaps some board members will be creative with three-way ideas that can help Montreal, New Jersey, and another team! :)

So the question to those who think that there's a deal that could be had better the Devils and the Habs, what exactly do you think the return would be for Halak? Or should I say, what could we need from their line-up that would be better than having Halak with us?
