Canadiens ink prospect David Desharnais to two-year contract

Wednesday, 11.05.2008 / 6:07 PM / News

Canadian Press

MONTREAL - Forward David Desharnais has signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens, the NHL club announced Wednesday.

The 22-year-old has nine points in 11 games this season with the Canadiens top farm club, the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League.

Desharnais, a five-foot-six centre, was scoring champion of the ECHL last season with 29 goals and 106 points. The Quebec City native was also named most valuable player and rookie of the year while leading the Cincinnati Cyclones to a Kelly Cup championship.

not bad but wont make it to the nhl.

If Marty St. Louis can make it. So can he.

If memory serves Marty wasn't a high end prospect either until he reached the Big League. David has made himself known through hard work, and not being drafted by any team.

Also to boot...even though David is small in stature, this guy is built like a TRAIN at 5'6''.

Desharnais will definatly make up for the loss of Grabovski at the centre position.

106 points is pretty impressive, even if it is in the ECHL.

Plenty of players who started in the ECHL have made it to the nhl, perfect example is Alexander Burrows.

And size IS NOT i repeat, IS NOT an issue in the new NHL.

He had a great training camp, i do beleive that during the training camp he got more points then games played.

If he has another great camp, he may be able to see some ice time next year, beacause wether we like it or not, ALOT of players will be leaving this summer beacause of all the contracts that are gonna run out.

Can't wait to see how this guy progresses.

Awesome news. This guy is a great player. I call him Roadrunner 2 ;) Heeheehee...

Glad the Canadiens gave him this. I was very impressed when I saw him play, but I was actually looking out for him because of all the things I heard about him from his other leagues. However people next to me were like "who is that little guy? he's quick! he's strong! wow! hey it's him again!" When Desharnais gets the puck, it ain't easy to get it away from him. Plus he's damn good at faceoffs and excellent at setting up his linemates. Who cares about height when you're a speedy little ROCK capable of skating through the legs of sluggish giants. If room ever appears, hopefully we'll see him with the Habs one day.

Those who watched the Roberval preseason game will remember that he was our best player. Wasn't afraid to stand in front of the net and dig for pucks. He made smart, solid plays and good passes.

His size can be used to his advantage. Imagine him in front of the net next to Chara, for example. How do you check a guy that small without cross checking him in the back of the head? Could be great at drawing penalties.

Desharnais' play forces Lever's hand

Don Lever said he was impressed by the performance of youngsters Ben Maxwell, David Desharnais, Yannick Weber and Ryan White since the beginning of the season. "They learn quickly", he said. "Desharnais has a great vision of the game and I try to find ways to use it more, especially in special teams. "

The best scorer of the ECHL last season with 106 points in the uniform of the Cyclones Cincinnati is centering the fourth trio with hard-hitting Ryan Flinn and Ryan White. Being on the fourth trio hasn't prevented him from being the third best scorer of the Bulldogs with three goals and six assists in 11 games.

Third, fourth line duties and almost a point a game. Not bad for "Tiny Mite." :D

Interesting to see how far he will go.

Nobody that small or undrafted could possibly make to the big leagues.

Marty St. Louis. Listed 5'9" 185lbs. (He's 5'7", really) Undrafted. 4 time All Star. Hart Trophy Winner. Lester B. Pearson Winner. Stanley Cup Winner.

Never say never.

Tell that to Theoren Fleury or Yvon Cournoyer or Brian Gionta for that matter

Buffalo has a top prospect named Nathan Gerbe, who is also listed at 5'5"-5'6" and about the same weight.

Obviously their size will be a detriment, but I don't think you can categorically rule them out.

Dezzy tore up the Q despite his size.

He tore up the ECHL despite his size.

He's more than holding his own in the AHL so far this year.

I'm pullin' for the little guy.

I guess I should have added sarcasm indicators. Read the bottom of my post. ;)

edit: Or where you just adding those players to my St. Louis reference? Either way, I agree with you concerning those guys. Mats Naslund could be another example. Last Hab to have a 100 point season. 5'7", 160lbs.
