tmash
Hopefully everything is okay with Burke. This is quite sudden and strange to happen mid-season. One explanation may be that they felt it wasn't fair for him to be making decisions for the future of the team he is leaving anyways (negotiating with UFAs, etc.)

I don't think its a health or personnal problem otherwise Murray would be noted as an interim. Way I probably see it is, they saw Burke wasn't going to re-up with them and they made a change so they could move in a new direction sooner rather than later. chrisjamessauve
Wow. I didn't see this coming. Now I really do believe Burke will be going to the Leafs.
Guest
Maybe the Leafs traded a 1st round pick for him.
DA_Champion
It seems he did a really bad job with Anaheim. Overpaid for players which created cap problems and caused the loss of Penner, half the team is UFA at the end of the season, and they don't seem to have many prospects. Their record is mediocre, and they drafted Bobby Ryan over players like Carey Price or Anze Kopitar.
tmash
okay so Burke to Toronto is all but done for next season. I'm not too worried, Burke hasn't shown he can build a competitor.
gracie12
okay so Burke to Toronto is all but done for next season. I'm not too worried, Burke hasn't shown he can build a competitor. I tend to agree. He got VERY lucky that anaheim had a tremendous depth pool which allowed him to go out & spend big on free agents/trades and not end up with AHL quality low cost players to fill the gaps. It will be interesting to see what he does in Toronto if/when they sign him, but it doesnt put fear into my heart or anything.

He did do a couple of very smart moves for the cup: mainly Selanee and Pronger (Nidermayer could have been done by a monkey). I also think he got Beauchemin. So he deserves some credit. However, while he did a great job putting the finishing touches on a franchise, he's never proven he's able to rebuild a franchise successfully. The Leafs are not in the same stage the Ducks were when he took over, it will be interesting to see how he can manage there.

I totally agree though he's over-hyped and it will be tough for him to meet the expectations in Toronto which will be nothing short of a cup. koreysecord1992
Eh, should he step into Toronto it'll be a little tougher than Anaheim that's for sure.
franck5890
Good on Anaheim, I say. I don't think that Brian Burke is a bad GM, but the drama being created is completely unnecessary, and it's a good move by the organization to be gone with it before it gets any worse than it already has become. SteenIsThaFuture
Theres become a sudden new twist to this, Burke will be going to Toronto, but not to do what we think he is: The Globe and Mail is reporting that Burke will finally confirm what everybody has been speculating for months -- that he's on his way to Toronto. Only the job isn't with the Leafs but with the Blue Jays as their next CEO. This is a report by only one paper but its certainly out there enough to be worthy of discussion. He was handed a terrible mess of a team from Quinn and MLSE still wanted them to make the playoffs at all costs. He was doomed from day one, so tough to judge him. And Fletcher has done a reasonable job so far at rebuilding while still making the team relatively competitive.
habsgal
The man has authority and ego issues. Other than winning a cup in Anaheim with a couple of key acquisition's and an already youth pool in that mix, Burke didn't do anything to deserve the hype that he's been getting since last year. Look no further than the Canadian West coast and you'll see my point.
hockey_gal89
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=255743&lid...s=topStory_main According Bob McKenzie, Jim Rutherford was offered the job last year.
