NHL Suspends Avery for Comments, Pending Hearing

BOB MCKENZIE

The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars' forward Sean Avery indefinitely, pending a hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and Avery will not be playing in tonight's game against the Calgary Flames.

Avery is being suspended for disparaging remarks he made this morning in reference to Calgary player Dion Phaneuf and Phaneuf's girl friend Elisha Cuthbert, who previously had a relationship with Avery.

"I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada," Avery said on camera this morning in Calgary. "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."

The hearing will take place in accordance with the NHL Constitution, for conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey," the NHL announced today.

More details to follow.

Although his comments were rude, I wish the suspension could be lifted for this one game tonight. I know that most of the Flames would want to beat the snot out of Avery for mocking Iginla earlier on this season by calling him boring. Iginla could win against Avery in a fight anyday, but I guess tonight won't be the night that it happens.

Unforntunately for Avery, he has dug himself an even deeper hole now. Next time he faces the Flames he'll be in for a rough night by having Phaneuf following him as well.

I hate Avery, always have. I think he should be taught a lesson, and sadly enough I don't feel that a suspension will do justice against him.

That's alright. Maybe Avery will face Komisarek first then, before he ever plays against Phaneuf again. ;):D:lol:

The quick suspension is the best thing the NHL did to protect the image of the League: Phaneuf pounding tonight on Avery would just escalate the story. I'm getting the sense Avery may be starting to feel the heat for the Dallas Stars woes.

I wonder if Brett Hull is starting (at least) to feel sorry he signed Avery. <_< Brett's not one to ever acknowledge he made a mistake. Pretty much the worst team in the NHL right now -- biggest change since last play-offs is Avery showed up. ;)

I do scratch my head though, about a lady who is attracted to Avery; not my type then, by default ;) (although she is most definitely attractive, I love that she loves hockey, and she is Canadian to boot!)

Knowing a bit about Modano, this episode will be more of Avery not impressing him -- what a mess.

Dion would have had a field day with him :lol:

Imagine if he tried to get himself suspended so he wouldn't have to get beat up, like how he always runs away when a bigger guy tries to fight him.

Man I was sooooo looking forward to this tonight

Couldn't they have waited just one day longer with the suspension

Hmmmm this is starting to sound even worse for Avery:

Stars are in a right mess right now, fans are calling for the coach's head, coach tries to protect Avery, and then Avery does this!?

Tippett may send a hooded guy of his own tonight to "fix-up" Avery!

Man, I kinda expect some poor Dallas Star player is going to get a shoulder full of open ice Phlying Phaneuf tonight because of Avery.

Stars 2-headed GM arrangement is being talked up as coming to an end, sooner than later. If it is Hull that goes, he can thank Avery.

Dallas should outright release him. Nobody else will pick him up, and he can permanently stay unemployed in the NHL. Can you imagine if he was a Hab and said something like that? I know there's no way in hell he would ever wear the Habs colours. However, with Gainey in charge, and the fan base that we have, Avery would by lynched and be in need of the witness protection program if he ever said something like that around here.

What a maroon.
