SteenIsThaFuture
Hello people, I would like to hear your opinoin on something that could really help me out. I have developed some theories about hockey which I plan to copyright, but I was debating whether or not to just write up a resarch paper, or write a full-fledged book on it. The book would about my takes on hockey, explaning its obvious flaws in the way its A ) Coached B ) Managed and C ) Scouted amonst other things and providing well thought out solutions using stats as a mainstay. If I were to bring it to a publisher he would need to make sure there is a market for the book (only one book on hockey stats has been published ever), however this is a book about the sport in general moreso than just plain stats. Thats why I would want to know if any of you would consider buying something like that?

roy_133
I'd be interested and I think a lot of hockey fans would, whether or not they agreed with what you're saying the majority of true fans like to explore every opinion and way of thinking. SteenIsThaFuture
Nope never written before ( I'm only 19), but my positions on the matter is explaining how poorly hockey people evaluate hockey players, use them, the way people percieve the sport and suggesting much better ways to do so. Some are my ideas and some are others who I will quote accordingly. Example: The debate on the 2nd assist, why is there only 2 assists on a goal? What is the logical reason behind not having just one or not having three? Those kinds of arguments and of course with logical solutions.
SK74_mtl
I'd read it, while your at it can you develop a whole system of sabermetrics for Hockey?
SteenIsThaFuture
I'd read it, while your at it can you develop a whole system of sabermetrics for Hockey? Like I said, there would be solutions to the obvious problems in hockey.
Telly_39_s_1
Sounds a bit like Mark Moore's "Saving the Game", though that really didn't go in depth with coaching and managing outside of encouraging the neutral zone trap. Best of luck with it!

gracie12
I will step out of the topic of content & give a little advice on the publishing of said book. As someone who's currently in the process of writing 2 books (one already picked up & in development stage, the other I have not yet shown to publishers) there are some things to consider. First, I would suggest you go to your local library & pick up some books on writing/publishing books. Do this now - before you have gotten into the writing, because planning some things out before you start will help you exponentially over doing so upon completion. Second, while I would say stick to your guns, do be aware that editors love to tinker & if you are not willing to at least listen to what they say & take constructive criticism, you will most likely never get your book published. Third, be prepared for rejection. Lots of it. You might get a super lucky break & end up getting an offer from the first company you approach - but dont expect it. Far better to expect that its going to take a lot of time, effort & hard work - and THEN - be surprised in a positive manner if it doesnt. Fourth & Finally: Stay focused & have fun. Remember that while the ultimate goal may be to get this book published, for now just writing it should be sufficient to drive you and get you excited each day you work on it. Of course there are options of self publishing, but remember that a) they can be hugely expensive (think $1000+ for 100 books) and b ) they are difficult to sell - I mean no bookstore will take them so where are you going to sell them? Online or in a small retail shop would be about the only option - neither of which may be an option unless the book appeals to a very varied audience. Good luck & keep us posted! SteenIsThaFuture
Hey MP, so how's the book going right now?? just curious cuz it seems interesting Kinda hit a snag due to work and such. If you want to see some of my writing, go to www.puckprospectus.com and search any articles made with a first name of Corey. That's essentially the only writing I will be doing for now at least until next year. As of now I haven't done much hard statistical writing its mostly been prospects stuff, I'm going to start though come like late January. Cheers. Phizetheole
I don't know if writing a book about whats "wrong" with hockey would be the best idea because the game suffers to other sports as it is and the NHL is trying to attract more fans. Making a negative book would probably just make the game look bad to bandwagon fans who are known for buying jerseys and merchandise left and right and provide the NHL with revenue so it can continue to grow.
