Steve Mason

Mason is good, there's no question. The only real question mark is his mental game. Its the one thing that makes Carey Price seem like such a lock (although the verdict is still out even with him). I mean you look at the greats - guys like Roy, Brodeur, Dryden, Hasek - if you saw them play they'd let in some unbelievably bad goals (I seem to remember Roy letting in 2 goals from Ray Bourque from way back at the bruin's goal line - icing attemps - in one season!!) - BUT - they could shake off a bad goal, a bad game, a bad week - and bounce back.

So many of the guys who have looked like phenoms recently (Jim Carey, Theodore, Raycroft, Cam Ward, Brent Johnson) have ended up being flops at worst, or 'decent' at best. Even guys like Fleury who have had incredible stretches are still question marks in the big picture because they will slump for very long periods.

What will be interesting to see is how Mason can handle pressure long-term. So far he's looking like the real deal, but only time will tell.

lol your kidding right?

He is very good but not as good as price.

A rookie goalie playing hot.

The next Raycroft? or Roy?

frankly, that's rather sad... are you so insecure about Carey Price that you can't admit Steve Mason's been better, much better this year?...

Mason has been the best goalie in the NHL this season... the numbers don't lie: best GAA by an incredible 1/3 of a goal -- more than half a goal better than Price, best SV% -- Price is ninth, most Shutouts -- 6 to 1 over Price... he could win the Goaltending Triple Crown...

you have no reason to think he won't always be this good except for your desire for Price to be better... maybe Mason does fizzle in the future, maybe Price does too -- Price hasn't even been the undisputed number one goaltender for a year yet, maybe his time to fade is coming too?... there's no reason to believe either player won't be great in the future, so to try to demean Mason's outstanding play this year by implying it's a fluke is simply petty...

Id also point out that IF both goalies are "the real deal" then it would sort of be like saying who was better in late 80's/early 90's - Roy, Hasek or Belfour - and the answer is: they were all great. They all won venizas & were outstanding.

That being said, if Columbus called us up and said "we want to trade Mason for Price, straight up" I wouldnt do it. Not because I necessarily think Price is better (i personally think they may very have the makings of the 2 best goalies in the nhl for the next decade +) but because trading bluechip prospect for bluechip prospect is always a gamble - especially in nets.

We are happy with Price & Im sure Columbus is happy with mason - lets leave it at that :)

If I were Columbus I would trade Steve right now. They are in desperate need of D help in Columbus and if they could get Bernier and Doughty from LA it would be a good deal.

Should Montreal also trade Price?

Sorry but even though Bernier was a 1st round draft pick he was a bust last season when he tried to crack the Kings line up as the back up. He is in the AHL this year developing and having an average season in Manchester with a save percentage at just .900. He is defintely not an adequate replacement in my books. The Columbus organization does not have any depth in the goalie position and Bernier would make it worse. Doughty is 19 and he has a long way to go before he reaches his potential.

Steve Mason on the other hand is the real deal - just look at the team in fromt of him. Just because he was a 3rd draft pick (as was Patrick Roy by the way) means squat. He is doing it at the NHL level straight out of juniors having not played the first month of the season. Imagine when Pascal Leclaire returns what type of duo they will have. Quite a dilemna; though I would seriously consider trading Leclaire first as he tends to have a good season following a bad season.

There has not been a rookie goalie who has impacted the game like he has for ................how long???? The only concern I have is his durability. In 2008 he underwent two knee surgeries - April 18 2008 and in September 2008. Personally I hope he has the staying power for a long NHL career.

In my opinion, he is the front runner for the top NHL Rookie this season and the Calder Cup. Just imagine that he has a chance at winning the Vezina and Crozier Saving Grace award as well in his rookie season. We are looking at history in the making.

Just because it isn't a beloved Montreal goaltender doesn't make it any less special for the game of hockey. :D
