gracie12
From the fourth Period: (http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/mtl090208.html) Canadiens interested in Pronger? TheFourthPeriod.com Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey is actively searching for a top defenseman and appears to have set his sights on a six-time All-Star. The Boston Globe hints the Canadiens are among the teams interested in Anaheim Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger, along with the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals. Pronger, who has one-year left on his contract beyond this season at $6.25 million, is being shopped by the Ducks and could be dealt before the March 4 trade deadline. Sources tell TFP the Ducks could move Pronger if GM Bob Murray feels the team is not in a strong enough position to compete for the Stanley Cup this spring. Gainey has been looking for a top-four defenseman to bolster the team's transition out of its own zone and its powerplay. However, with center Robert Lang now out for the season, the Habs are also looking for a top-six forward. Pronger, 34, has registered nine goals and 23 assists in 56 games with the Ducks so far this season. From the Editor: The Habs have extra cap space now that Lang's out of action for the rest of the regular-season, but they'd have to move a few million dollars more to fit Pronger's price tag under the cap. So far, I haven't heard anything concrete about Montreal's interest, other than a simple inquiry, so I honestly don't know if these teams are in serious trade talks, but I'd suspect things to pick up for Gainey (on an overall scale) as we inch closer to the deadline. -- David Pagnotta. Interesting. It is possible that with a game breaking defenseman like Pronger, we woudlnt even need another forward (although i would feel better with at least 1 more offensive-minded centre). Probably wont come to pass, but sounds like Gainey is at least talking to Anaheim.
hockey_gal89
If this rumor is close to true, this is my offer: To Ana: Higgins, D'Agostini, Fisher, 1st in 09 To MTL: Chris Pronger

At $6.25m he's hardly a steal but obviously much cheaper than what he'd fetch as an UFA.
leafs_rock_go_mccabe
Well... He'd certainly help bolster our defensive depth and our PP.

ChiLla
Would be great to have him for a Cup run, unfortunately we aren't exactly there yet. Major cap hit as well, could be problematic for next year considering all the UFAs we've got. If we're about to resign Komisarek and keep all three of Markov, Hamrlik, and Pronger, we'd be looking at approximately $21-22M tied up to 4 defensemen. I'm not sure if I like that. Although we'd arguably have the best top 4 defense in the league, it might seriously handcuff us when it comes to bolstering our offense.

ChiLla
this trade makes no since ,the habs would have to give up a lot to get this guy ,,mabe off season ,,mabe Essentially, this trade would make a lot of sense, considering our defensive struggles and the continuing misery on the PP. hockey_gal89
this trade makes no since ,the habs would have to give up a lot to get this guy ,,mabe off season ,,mabe I disagree, I think MTL can take advantage of an opportunity here and clear out some of the dead weight forward depth that is wasting space in the system to make room for Pronger...Plus if Komisarek walks over the summer, You've still got Pronger in place for 1 more season, while you develop replacements on the farm. Lynch_mtl
Does anybody remember the skate stomp incident a while back? This guy seems like an idiot, and I'm definetely not overpaying for this guy. Remember what Avery did for Dallas? That's what cheap shots do for a lockerroom. FirstStar
Not that I have my hopes up, but this is someone I'd love to see in Montreal. I loved what he did in Edmonton, he has had injuries but nothing like Havlat or Gaborik. He's still young enough to stick with us for a few years (that is if he's willing to stay here... Left Edmonton). Now this is someone I could get excited over... He's the type of guy who turns it up in the post-season and when he's on a role, he's pretty much unstoppable. What will it take to get him here... For starters a young defensive prospect or one from Hamilton. Higgins just might be the type of player the ducks could use. He can play the 1st line, but is more of a 2nd line winger, can also play well on a defensive line. The ducks have talent on that team, surprised they haven't done better. Could be a win-win for both teams, if Plex and Higgins were to go there, it could spark their game.Pronger, he does well where ever he is.

Do you remember the run to the cup the Oilers had a few seasons back? It was all Pronger and Roli. This is one issue, my concern is will he be with us when it comes time to re-new his contract? FirstStar
this trade makes no since ,the habs would have to give up a lot to get this guy ,,mabe off season ,,mabe You just don't want to face us with a Pronger. We've got most of his cap cleared with Lang on IR. Dealing Higgins to Anaheim would clear up the rest. Won't take much, and he's definitely worth it, also gives us another veteran on the blueline. Not to take away from Hamrlik or Markov, but their english isn't the best. I think he'd be an amazing fit, look what he did for the Oilers!
