gunner_canadian
Having lost six straight and in jeopardy of falling out of the playoff race in the next two weeks, the Phoenix Coyotes may find themselves to be sellers by the March 4 trade deadline. Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris is in the final year of his contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1. Sources tell TFP the Montreal Canadiens, actively shopping for a top-four blueliner, have been scouting the Coyotes lately, presumably to watch Morris. Morris, 30, has a cap hit just under $4 million this season. He has a no-trade clause and would have to approve any move the Coyotes agree upon. Meanwhile, TSN also reported the Habs have sent out scouts to Phoenix's last few games, noting that Morris and center Olli Jokinen are believed to be available for trade. jean-1
I think anything may help right now, a little shake up is in order. Oli would be a great addition, big guy. I don't know enough about Morris.

babinator77
derek morris sounds like a pretty interesting pick up: reasonable price, seasoned vet, and we wouldn't have to give up nearly as much as they'd expect for jokinen - not that they gave up that much to get him... here's his sporstnet scouting report (keep in mind these are often outdated but still interesting): Assets: Possesses a well-rounded package of top-level skills, specifically an excellent skating stride and booming shot from the point. Is very strong and aggressive along the blueline. Flaws: Has a tendency to lose his concentration in the defensive zone and give the puck away at the most inopportune moments. Must learn to better harness his aggressive nature. Career Potential: No. 2 defenseman.

SteenIsThaFuture
Ya I made an inquiry about Morris about a whil ago Well Phoenix actually has a decent core, Turris, Mueller, Boedker, Tikhonov are on the big club. They've got Porter, Montoya and Summers coming up as well, so all those years of sucking have paid off (hello Kings?? I know they may have a promising future now but I mean cmon took long enough, haven't made the postseason since 01-02, Colcumbus gets a pass since they were an expansion and they're at least competetive this year). Where was I? O ya, on Phoenix dumping payroll! Well if Wayne wants to take a hit out of his pocketbook to keep the players there hes free too, but the fact that they needed to beg the NHL for funds doesn't bode well for their financial status. I'm a Jays fan and the same is happening to that team due to the economy, so hate to play big-market bullies ala Yankees, but hey you play to win the game, and Phoenix may be looking to dump payroll as they have up to 7 million to clear potentially. The only other big contracts asides from the aformentioned ones I eluded to are Bryzaglov at 4.25 million for the next 3, or/and more realistic, is defenseman Derek Morris, who is a pending UFA, age 30, is owed just under 4 million this year. Heres Sportsnet scouting report on him (I take these things with a grain of salt): Assets: Possesses a well-rounded package of top-level skills, specifically an excellent skating stride and booming shot from the point. Is very strong and aggressive along the blueline. Flaws: Has a tendency to lose his concentration in the defensive zone and give the puck away at the most inopportune moments. Must learn to better harness his aggressive nature. Potential: #2 D-Man He weighs in at 6'0 221 and shoots right (unfortunately), maybe not the ideal answer for our blueline, but its something!! I haven't watched him play so I have no clue what his value is for a suggested trade, but as an impending UFA it can't be that bad. He definetly would be worth looking into, Phoenix needs to dump money while it looks for a new owner and has lease issues I believe with the arena. Nothing spectacular, but he would definetly be a tweak in the right direction.

Jokinen is the only guy...period . And Jokinen would be one of the sure-fire keepers for that team. He's still signed for another year, and I have a strong feeling that they'll be wanting to keep him aboard as part of the core.
habs1119
Let us assume this would happen and assume also that Morris waives his no trade clause Morris is a cap hit of 4mil (but a UFA at end of season) Jokinen is a hit of 5.2 M this year and next This move could give us another solid dman (a top 4) and a great C who has size,skill(30-40G man) and faceoff guy To Mtl Morris Jokinen To Phx 1st rd 2010 2nd rd 2009 Chipchura Fisher Kovalev Rights to Valentenko (as the KHL is imploding and he may return to a team that would be more apt to play him ASAP) Bouillon I would make pleks available if required for this trade to work too This has an added advantage of shedding payroll and could let walk any of the players that are UFA if they don't fit their needs. I think the key part of the deal for Phx is the youth and picks as they can continue their rebuilding and not sacrifice too much this season, with these additions they should still be competitive for a playoff spot. If this trade flew I would wait to the end of season and see if Morris is a real fit here and resign him, the key of the deal for us is Jokinen as we have all thought about him in a CH for sometime
Bigbot
I was told maybe this is the spot for what I put in the Gaiiney and Carbo thread. From Spectors site. CORUSSPORTS.COM: reports Montreal Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau cancelled today's team practice in Edmonton and will explain to the media later today as for the reason behind the cancellation. SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Fourth Period reported earlier today their source claimed the Canadiens have been scouting the Phoenix Coyotes lately, leading to speculation they're interested in Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris, while there's also talk Olli Jokinen might be available. That's likely to add to the speculation that perhaps a Canadiens trade is going to be announced. Something might be brewing or then again this could be nothing at all. We'll find in soon enough

fourtrax
Agreed. Subban is not going to be moved unless we are talking Vinny Lecavalier. Oi. Is Subban the next Chris Chelios? Have I missed something? He projects as a good top-four offensive d-man, but he's brutal in his own end, why do we make a fetish out of canonizing second-tier prospects before they've played a minute of NHL hockey? If the right deal comes along, I have zero problem with packaging Subban in a trade.

DA_Champion
Jokinen and Morris? That'll cost a fortune. Yes and his shotty play in the World Juniors kept us all in a lackadazical state. The reason people think Subban is bad at defense is that he is good at offense. Don't try and make sense out of it.
