Having lost four straight, the Colorado Avalanche sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings and could start shedding some salary as the trade deadline approaches.

During last night's Hotstove segment of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada with Ron MacLean, Al Strachan, Mike Milbury and Pierre Lebrun, Strachan indicated that veteran forward Ryan Smyth was available.

Smyth, 32, has registered 18 goals and 26 assists in 56 games with the Avalanche so far this season. The Banff, Alberta, native signed a five-year contract with Colorado on July 1, 2007 and has a no-trade clause -- he would have to approve any deal the Avs make.

The Avalanche is believed to be entertaining calls for a number of its players, including defensemen Jordan Leopold, Brett Clark, John-Michael Liles and Ruslan Salei, and forwards Marek Svatos, Ian Laperriere and Darcy Tucker.

According to CBC, the Avs are looking to dump some salary, which could make them quite active in the coming weeks.
