NHL executive Gregory hospitalized Friday

02.27.2009 / 3:12 PM / News By NHL.com

Staff Jim Gregory, NHL Senior Vice President, Hockey Operations Supervision and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame is in critical condition at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.

Gregory, 73, suffered a heart attack Thursday afternoon at the NHL offices in Toronto.

He was stabilized before being moved from the Emergency Ward to the Intensive Care Unit on Thursday night.

Gregory has been involved in professional hockey for more than five decades and began his association with the NHL in the late 1960s when he was hired as a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The next spring, the 33-year-old Gregory replaced the legendary Punch Imlach as the team's general manager, a position he would hold for a decade.

In 1979, he was hired by the League as Director of Central Scouting. Seven years later, he moved to the hockey operations department where he has been a guiding force in many of the on-ice improvements that have happened to the game in the past two decades -- including the institution of a goal-review procedure.

In addition to his duties with the NHL, Jim has served as Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame's Selection Committee since 1998. He was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the builder category in 2007.
