Best And Worst Gms, Coaches In The Nhl?

I'm wondering what people's opinions are.

My vote for worst GM: Ray Shero.

Had a decade of high draft picks.

Was focused on keeping 3 elite centers, and has now let go of Colby Armstrong, Angelo Esposito, Ryan Whitney and a 1st rounder... and got no long-term value out of FOUR first rounders, which is like most the first rounders from the past seven years. Soon he will give up Jordan Staal. He also lost Ryan Malone last year for nothing. Focused on Hossa on July 1st this year and ended up with ... Satan and Fedotenko. Soon Jordan Staal will be gone.

Imagine where Pittsburgh would be if they had traded Malkin or Crosby for a string of wingers, draft picks and prospects sometime last year?

Best coach possibly Lindy Ruff, he has good longevity, most coaches start to suck when they're with the same too long for too long, which is usually around 3 years. He's done well with mediocre teams.

No opinion on best GM and worst coach.

This paragraph from wikipedia says all you have to know about why Mike Milbury is the worst GM any team has ever had, and if it doesn't, look him up, he's a joke:

"Many young players and prospects that Milbury traded away went on to have distinguished careers, often eclipsing those of the players he received in return. He has traded away defensemen Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Eric Brewer, Darius Kasparaitis, and Bryan McCabe; goalies Roberto Luongo and Tommy Salo, as well as forwards Olli Jokinen, Todd Bertuzzi, Raffi Torres. Milbury has also come under fire for his draft day decisions such as choosing Rick DiPietro first overall in 2000 over Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik; as well as his decision to include the 2001 second overall draft pick (Jason Spezza) as part of the Alexei Yashin trade."

Alexei Yashin?

Ure just a thread idea guy aren't you :P

Actually, I only start around 5% of the topics around here, Greek Hockey Coach shuts down the other ones.

I got an agreement with him whereby I teach him about how to meet women and he allows my topics to stay. ;)

1) Nice thread.

2) I gotta say the worst case of general managing I have ever seen in the salary cap era is John Ferguson Jr.

3) That Milbury paragraph is just terrible.

4) In my opinion Glen Sather is a bad GM when it comes to free agent signings considering that there are players who actually want to play in New York.

5) Bryan Murray and Don Waddell do not impress me either.

6) Worst coach? Hmmmmm....tough call. I am going to go with, well, now that I think about it, I thought Carbo was pretty bad.

Worst GM currently: I will go with Garth Snow. It isn't all Snow's fault as the wacky owner gets his nose in things. That long term deal with DiPietro comes to mind.

Honourable mention: Glen Sather. Slats still doesn't understand the new NHL. Still looking to overpay for talent rather than developing players.

The best GM: Ken Holland

Worst Coach: Craig MacTavish I can't understand how this guy keeps his job. Guess it helps when the owner is your buddy..

best coach: tie Ken Hitchcock and Lindy Ruff

Honourable mention: Barry Trotz

I don't know how I missed this thread, I might as well close it now since you went public with our agreement.

Isn't he married? I smell adultery, that evil, kineving, sinning GHC.

Aren't you the little information detective.

Yeah Milbury is definitely the bench mark for bad GM's everywhere God forbid he ever gets another job as a GM.

The best GM in my opinion in recent history has to be Pierre Lacroix the man is a hockey genius.

Is this a current or all-time list? I will go for both:

GM - best:

Current - Ken Holland - record speaks for itself.

All-time - Frank Selke - ditto.

Coach - best:

Current: Mike Babcock - best coach in the game with the best team - excellent chance to win the Cup again this year.

All-time: Scotty Bowman and Hector "Toe" Blake - two of a kind - records speak for themselves.

GM - worst:

Current: Garth Snow - see below about once proud franchise.

All-time: Sid Abel (great player, but who can forget his refusal to play his best team against the Rangers in 1970, when the Rangers and Habs were fighting for the last playoff spot - they allowed the Rangers not only to win the game, but to score enough goals that Montreal had to score 5 against Chicago that night, which they couldn't do even though they pulled their goalie, like the Rangers did in winning their game against Detroit).

Coach - worst:

Current: Wayne Gretzky - hasn't been able to do a thing with the Phoenix Coyotes and has gotten a free pass for too long.

All-time: John Brophy

While we are at it, I will name my all-time owners

Best - Current: Mike Illitch - revitalized a once-downtrodden franchise into a major power in the NHL.

Best - All time: Senator Donat Raymond - hugely responsible for building the Montreal powerhouse of the 50s.

Worst - current: Charles Wang - Islanders (how can they let this once proud franchise go shabby?).

Worst - all-time: Harold Ballard - controversial, bombastic, and everything else you can put a tag on - he did ruin a once-proud hockey legacy, and they still haven't recovered yet.

I Harold Ballard - controversial, bombastic, and everything else you can put a tag on - he did ruin a once-proud hockey legacy, and they still haven't recovered yet.

Harold Ballard, just the mere mention of his name makes my blood boil. He was a scoundrel and convicted for multiple counts of fraud sentenced to 9 years. He was vindictive towards so many great players including Keon, Sittler, and Mahovlich. Not to mention just how crappy the Leafs were during the 70s and 80s. He ran the franchise on a shoe string and raked in the cash. He let the once proud Maple leaf gardens fall into disrepair and even sold the leafs' stanley cup banners and destroyed foster hewitt's gondola to make room for luxury boxes.

I can not believe that his name is enshrined in the hockey hall of fame as a builder. I just can't see how someone who was so detrimental to the sport should be honored.

If Bob Gainey doesn't pull a rabbit out of his hat this summer, he's definitely top 3 of the worst GM in the league by far.

He pretty much destroyed the main core of the Dallas Stars to win 1 cup then he came here and a couples of years later were in that kind of situation with a gazillion UFA's and RFA's and a Montreal market that usually scares UFA to come here.

It's make it or break it this summer for Bob.

And if he ever walks away this summer, he's a total douche, worst of the worst.

Bob's performance in Dallas as GM 1993 - 2002 : yes only one cup, two stanley cup final appearances (consecutive seasons), two presidents' trophies, only missed the play offs twice, 1st in their division for 5 straight years...

umm yeah he did horrible in Dallas
