Preference: Early Playoff Exit Or Better Draft Pick?

What would you rather see take place?

1) Habs come in around ~10th in the Eastern Conference like they did in 2006-07, and then we get an expected draft pick of ~11th overall with some lottery modifications likely. In 2006-07 we used the 12th overall to draft McDonagh.

2) Habs come in around 7th, and play between 4 and 10 playoff games. Habs young nucleus (Kostitsyn, Kostitsyn, Plekanec, Price, O'Byrne, Lapierre, Latendresse) get playoff experience. Come late June we have the ~15th or so overall pick.

Who cares about picks, play to win the game, I don't even care about getting players playoff experience, get into the dance and anything can happen from there.

This team CAN BE competitive. If we had the whole squad firing on all cylinders Id say we'd have a good chance to make the final 4. Problem is that we have 8 games to try to make these guys believe in themselves.

IF they can start doing that, and win 7, 8 or 9 of the final 10 games, I think we have a good chance to do well in the playoffs.

IMHo you cant play odds & say "well, we probably wont win in the playoffs anyway, so..."

I STILL believe in this team....I only hope they start to believe in themselves.

Playoffs for sure!!!

Like Sportsfreak just said anything can happen after that......yes even with this team.

....and besides a couple slots higher in the draft doesn't neccesarily mean anything anyways. It's all about scouting and picking the right players at your position. Something I think the Habs have doen pretty well as of late.

Easy proof of this comes from.......you guessed it, the Wings with Zetterberb, The Datsukyin' One and the list goes on with all the really good players they have drafted without a high draft pick.

So I was playoffs and pick 20th or lower over a 10th overall pick, if your scouts do their jobs right, there won't be a difference between 10th and 20th, hell, there won't sometimes be a difference between the 10th pick and the 160th pick.

WE WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.....JUST BELIEVE!!!!!

Making the playoffs only masks the fact that we need a major shift in our philosophy behind the bench and in management. You guys can say 'anything can happen in the playoffs' all you want, but when we bow out in five games to [insert division leader here], I'll be wishing for the higher draft pick myself. ;)

Don't get me wrong. If the team makes the playoffs, I'll cheer for them to go as far as they can. Human nature. But this team couldn't hit water falling out of a boat and hasn't been able to even find the ocean on the map for almost three months. Are they going to stop playing a 0-5 trap or giving up the blue line because it's the playoffs? We already have difficulty adjusting to what teams are doing. How on earth is that going to improve in a seven-game series with the same opponent? We had all kinds of trouble adjusting last season in the playoffs and we were the conference leader playing the 8th and 7th seeds!

Thats not the issue I'm pointing out, I'm not an idiot, I have low expectations of the team making noise in the postseason, but the matter of the fact is all of a sudden if they get hot and become October Habs for a week or 2 all of a sudden everything changes.

Is it realistic? Heck no, but wanting to not put yourself in a position to win so you can get a few higher positions in the draft is crazy IMO, you play to win, and if you're not playing to win, please forfeit the games so the real teams can play.

As usual well said, this team has no direction and no heart these things won't change come playoff time. I'd rather they don't make the playoffs at this point they're an embarrassment. Nothing can come out of a first round exit I'd rather they get a chance at decent player through the draft.

I get that. I wasn't actually implying anything different, just stating my own viewpoint.

Again, I never said the team should or would tank games to finish out of the playoffs. You play to win, and to advance as far as you can. But if you gave me a choice between making the playoffs and not making the playoffs, I'd hope we wind up doing the latter, because as much as 'anything can happen' in the postseason, there is very little chance of the team doing anything except bowing out in the first round. I'm not interested in pinning my hopes on miracles is all. :)

Finishing out of the playoffs would be a clear, unmistakable message to Gillett that sweeping changes need to happen.

listen weep sweeping changes are going to me made no matter what happens

But you dont play through a grueling 6 month 82 game season for a draft pick, you go through it with hopes of being in the stanley cup tournament... thats what its all about

I really hope you're right.

Obviously. I'm not saying we should tank. But the prospect of scraping into the playoffs only to be eliminated in four or five games by whoever we face doesn't exactly thrill me. ;)

It's pretty sad that this is even a topic of discussion but this is where we are. No, a high draft pick won't make much of a difference or fix the many problems with this team. All we can do as fans is cheer for them if they make the playoffs or hope for better times ahead.

True..........

But just think of all the storylines if the Habs won the Stanley Cup. Hey......it's fun to dream. LOL

Agreed. The playoffs are an entirely different game as illustrated by Montreal's poor playoff performance last year. The team had trouble with two teams who they swept the season series with. Kind of shows that regular season rank doesn't mean much except for home ice advantage.

A different perspective:

Not only will it serve as good experience to make the playoffs for the young players, but it will also generate that much needed revenue for Gilette. This could make him think twice before he tries to sell the team because we all know he's been a pretty great owner. Last thing we need is Jim Balsillie trying to move us to Hamilton!

If the difference of a measly 2 points or whatever is what keeps the president from claiming changes need to be made, its clear the owner made a mistake in hiring a guy who should be able to evaluate hockey and hockey GM's, and therefore the problems stems higher than Gainey if thats the case.

I'll take an early playoff exit

Unless the Habs end up last, or in the bottom 3, in the entire league they probably won't draft a playter who could step right in and play .

Besides , the Habs usually draft college D men who are 5 years away from being ready to play in the AHL
