Antonio20066
The Hamilton Bulldogs lost 2-1 in overtime last night to the Manitoba Moose, but earning that one single point at the end of regulation time was all that the team needed to clinch a spot in the 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs! Congrats Bulldogs!! GO DOGS GO!!!

Johnny_rudeboy
They are currently in 4th place. Fourth in the conference and tied for 6th in the AHL for points. The North Division is a very strong conference this year. The 5th, 6th and 7th place teams in the Conference are only separated by 2 points. Right now it looks like the Bulldogs will most play either Houston or the Toronto Marlies (what a series that would be); but Peoria could be their opponent in the 1st round. It is going to be an interesting finish for those 3 teams who would probably prefer to match up against Hamilton who has 7 rookies on the roster. Antonio20066
The Bulldogs are currently sitting in 3rd place in the North Division. If the standings remain the way they are, the Bulldogs would play the Grand Rapids Griffins in the 1st round.

I had thought (mistakenly) that the AHL followed the NHL and played 1-8 in the conference. Because of the uneven team split in the Divisions what would the playoff structure look like in the Western Conference if 5 teams qualified from the Western Division and 3 teams from the Northern Division? That is correct. The AHL still plays Divisions in the playoffs. The uneven team split in the divisions would come into effect if the 5th place team in the Western Division (currently the Chicago Wolves) finishes with more points than the 4th place team in the North Division (currently the Toronto Marlies). In that situation, the Wolves would bump out the Marlies and take over that playoff spot within the North Division. This is why it is so important that the Bulldogs finish 3rd place or higher. Thanks Lammy. Unless there is a late season surge it sure looks like last year's Calder Cup Champion Chicago is going to follow the same path of the Bulldogs and miss the playoffs this year.
