Hawker_mtl
Yep, and I never compared the two. Ovechkin is a scoring machine and more importantly he's consistent. Kovalev's vision, ability pass make him superior in terms of pure talent and skill, but no doubt Ovechkin is 10 times better. And I think that lack of consistency would be the main argument against not resigning Kovy. It's a tough choice. Sure he can break games wide open, but he can also lose you some when he dreadfully underperforms. It will be interesting what Gainey does in the off-season. habsfanfla
I will be at the game tommrow night Sec 324 8th row Greens! GO HABS GO!!!! They better win this one.. I have been two 5 games this season I am 1-1 in Toronto and a brutal 0-3 in Montreal so I need this win to keep my self of a very high ledge!! Sad to see Kostitsyn is unlikely to play but hopefuly all we will need is the Kovalev, Koivu, Tanguay line to earn 2 points. GO HABS GO!!!!!!! I'm going to the game tonight! Habs fans will represent loud and proud tonight at Air Canada Centre. And hopefully we get a win. I'm 0-0-2 so far at games this season which were the CAR @ MTL game back in December and last week's contest at home against Buffalo. Reminds me of the scene in "Slapshot" Reggie Dunlop to the team before the game....."OK guys, it's their rink, it's their building and it's their #$$%^%$ town but tonight we got our fans with us, they spent their own dough to get here. So let's get out there and stick it to 'em" So.....let's do it......hit their organist in the head with a slapshot, question the sexual orientation of their goalies wife...but MOST important...WIN THE GAME!!! GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
audrey1188
From CKAC sports: first 2 lines stay the same (if we can consider the 3rd line our 2nd right now) 3rd : Higgins - Plek - Dandy 4th : Andrei k - Metro - Stewart Markov - Komo Breezer - Hammer Gorges - Schneider Carey is still on the ice, facing some shots. He feels much better today

Even if he was an average player on his bad nights I'd say resign him in a second. But when Kovy's bad, he can be one of the worst players in the league and a huge liability. Hard to say whether that's worth a premium salary.

Win-the-cup
And I think that lack of consistency would be the main argument against not resigning Kovy. It's a tough choice. Sure he can break games wide open, but he can also lose you some when he dreadfully underperforms. It will be interesting what Gainey does in the off-season. This year, for most of the season Kovy was lined up with players who didn't compliment his style. I guess that would frustrate anyone. This is a team sport, you can't do it all yourself (except for Grabs of Toronto ) Now that Koivy has team mates who work well with him you can see his true value to the team. Chemistry is a large part of hockey and when it works you keep the components together. I guess BG learned a valuable lesson when he let go of the quaterback to Montreal's powerplay last year (Streit) thereby giving up ....in the minimum a goal a game...or more this season.....just count the points we might have had when you look at the OT & shootout losses that may well have never got to that point because the team won it in regulation time. It's BG's job to find players who work well with one another.........you don't have to have a team of superstars......just good chemistry between the lines & pairings. audrey1188
I'd resign both Koivu and Kovalev IF we can find a few impact players to lead the team and IF they accept a lot less money and a less important role. We can't rely on two 35+ y/o guys to carry the team on their shoulder anymore.

Thats the thing 4.5 mil really isn't that bad if he really wanted to im sure he could have made himself a 7 mil player in the past if he wanted to. I dont think he wants to be the best player he just wants to play hockey and im fine with that. He is just doing what he has to do now to make the playoffs and keep playing hockey

If we can keep him for 4.5, I'd be ok with that, despite his inconsistency. If his asking price goes way up, I'm not sure if Gainey will be willing to pay that premium salary. For sure not, but I really dont think he will, I could be wrong but i think he is happy with his situation. He is already rich playing in the best hockey city in the world and the majority of the fans love him. What more could someone who likes to take a night off here and there ask for? If you look at it from Gainey's point of view though, Kovy does add a lot to this team despite his inconsistency, and I believe he would be hard-pressed to find a replacement for him for under 5mil. If you look at our 5mil+ earners right now, they include Tanguay, Markov, Hamrlik, and Schneider (though we're only paying part of his salary... I seriously doubt Gainey would keep him on for that). When considering the amount of impact Kovy adds to the team, he easily fits with that group.
