Bourne
First and foremost, this is not, I repeat not an insinuation that Koivu is in any way a bad captain or should given up captaincy. I am merely curious that with the possibility of them signing elsewhere this off season, who you believe should replace him as captain. I understand Kovalev, Komisarek, Lang and Tanguay could all leave as well however for argument sake let us assume it was only Koivu and possibly Lang who did not resign. Personally, I without a shadow of a doubt believe the honor should be Markov's. I am amazed he is not even an assistant captain and unless I am completely unaware of why he shouldn't be, I believe he has earned the title. Not only is Markov our best player, he is one of most hard working, consistent and passionate. The team was utterly lost without him and while he may not be as vocal, he allows his stick to do the motivating. Lang, if he remained with us is another I would recommend because he remains me of another Koivu, someone who motivates the youth in our organization, who passes on words of wisdom and is a work hard, despite his age. Kovalev is a possibility as well however my concern derives from his inconsistency, which is why I favor Markov over Kovalev myself.
habulator
Like you, I believe the honor should be Markov's, although he did disappear in the /08 playoffs, not really what you want from a leader. I guess the big question is WHO is going to be here next season. We all love Saku but you know what - at 4.75 mill. I would be looking elsewhere. It's going to be an interesting summer for sure! leafs_rock_go_mccabe
Interesting thread. Also, I agree that this disucssion could become very real very quickly, considering the possibility of seeing major changes in Montreal next season. I think (assuming Koivu is not here) that the job should fall on Andrei Markov's shoulders, if he's up for it. I think next season could be a rebuilding year, and I don't believe there would be a ton of pressure on Markov should players like Koivu and Kovalev not be on the team anymore. js2
There should be a "None of the above.. please don't leave us, Koivu" option.
catt-_mtlc
There should be a "None of the above.. please don't leave us, Koivu" option. Amen to that. If Koivu does leave however I think the honor of wearing the C should go to Markov.
Manatee-X
I'd probably go with Markov too, only because I'm not really convinced on any of the other options. As it is though, I can't even bring myself to vote. I know this thread was a hypothetical, but unless he's gone I don't even want to think of anyone but Koivu with the C
Kubby31
Amen to that. If Koivu does leave however I think the honor of wearing the C should go to Markov. Our captain does not leave,he stays dammit. But ,I also would say Markov in a heart beat if it comes down to it,hoping it doesn't.

musicalhab
Komisarek, yes Markov's a better player on the ice and Komo is possibly going to another team, but I don't think Markov would be an ideal captain. He is to quiet, Komo has the ability to speak his mind and I think he will be the voice in the dressing room.
bombguy
Koivu will be back for another season, he will retire as a Hab therefore, he will remain Captain, at least he gives 110% each night even though he has slowed down, but we all do with age. Larry-Robinson
Well I think Koivu will still be here, so everything stays status quo. If Koivu moves on, then Kovy should get it, maybe this will give him a little more motovation to play a little harder and lead this team.
Habnation
With the exception of Markov and Lang. Get rid of everyone of those useless tools. Trade them all to Tampa Bay and get Lecavalier, then build a proper team around him. Price , Lecavalier, Markov= great base to start with. We have some awesome young talent in the system like Glumac, Pacioretty,Subban, etc. Get some size, get hard to play against, these are the teams that go deep in the playoffs. darren19
Markov a Captain??? He doesn't have the personality to be a captain. Why isn't Lapierre in the poll, he's one of the few players this season that has shown leadership on and off the ice.
teststory
Lets wait and see what the team is. There cold be a lot of new players playing for the Habs next year.
fourtrax
Why isn't Lapierre in the poll, he's one of the few players this season that has shown leadership on and off the ice. Because he's proven nothing in the grand scheme of things. He's had one good season, followed by a playoffs in which he completely disappeared. To me, the only reason for making a young player like Lapierre captain is when the player is so skilled and so clearly the center of the team that you have no choice (Crosby in Pittsburgh, Toews in Chicago). In 3-4 years, Lapierre might be captain material. Not today. I think AlexK is right, though. It's premature to talk about replacing Saku as captain when we don't know what the team will look like next season. Saku could return. Or we could sign someone else who could wind up becoming captain. Too early to say one way or another.

leafs_rock_go_mccabe
I wish WE had signed Zdeno Chara instead of Boston. Then we could give him the "C" if Koivu were ready to leave. Zdeno and Markov patrolling the blueline... SICK!

Zdeno and Markov patrolling the blueline... SICK! That would be tuff even though Chara is a very good defenseman. It's like that guy you hated for years coming over to your side. All of a sudden you are supposed to like the guy. There has to be someone else who is a good defenseman, but isn't hated as much. How about Bouwmeester? It is far too premature to talk about the next captain when the current captain could still be with us. I think the organization should focus its attention on building a better team, and then let the whole captain thing take care of itself. BTW: Thank you Saku, for everything you have meant to the Habs throughout your career. If you decide you want to leave for a chance to play for a winner, I don't blame you, and wish you well. swimmerpuck
Of the players on the list I voted for Alex Kovalev. However, I would give serious consideration to Lapierre also. I know he's young but he showed some sweet moves and potential. And I think he would absolutely relish the opportunity. And he's French-Canadien. And he's - well I can't think of anything else right now. LOL
