catt-_mtlc
With the NHL awards taking place tonight I thought I might open this topic up for debate because its been on my mind for some time. Shouldn't it be time to rename some of these awards? Now I'm not saying that some of these trophies are not named after great men but it would be fun to think of some of our current era players being honored. To be honest I feel that some of these trophies are named after men that really don't deserve to be honored either such as Jack Adams the man was a tyrant who cheated his players for years while the owners reaped the rewards. Same goes for Norris and Smythe, while they were league pioneers they weren't very honest or ethical when it came to paying their players. Here are some suggestions as to what to rename these awards: Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky should have trophies named after them. Lets start with Gretzky, the man set records that I feel will never be broken. Not only that but opened markets in L.A. which paved the way for 2 other California teams he won the Art Ross so many times that he should have that trophy named after him. Mario Lemieux was amazing and true genius on the ice, came back and dominated after beating back cancer and severe injuries. Not only that but he saved his franchise not once but twice. He's truly an MVP and should have the League MVP trophy named after him. Bobby Orr was like a shooting star he wasn't in the league for very long but when he played he truly shined. Some of the achievements and records he currently owns: First defenceman to score 40 goals in a season Most points in one NHL season by a defenceman (139; 1970–71) Most assists in one NHL season by a defenceman (102; 1970–71) Highest plus/minus in one NHL season (+124; 1970–71) Won the Norris Trophy 9 times The man revolutionized the position of defenceman and thus should have the best defenceman of the year trophy named after him. Some other suggestions: Calder (best rookie) Teemu Selene probably the best rookie in recent memory set the record for most goals by a rookie (76) Jack Adams (best coach) Either Toe Blake or Scotty Bowman should have this trophy named after them Vezina and/or Jennings: Patrick Roy (yes I'm a tad biased), Jacques Plante, Dominic Hasek all would be good candidates for these trophies. I'll open this up for debate now this is the first topic I've started on these forums so please be kind
roy_133
I see no reason to change the names. The Vezina, for example, the Habs donated it to the league in honor of Georges Vezina after he passed away in 1926 so why change it to the Roy Trophy or the Hasek trophy? I don't have a problem with adding a trophy here or there and naming it after someone relatively recent but I don't see any reason to take away the honor you gave these people just to give it to someone who lived in a more recent era. Although I wouldn't mind renaming the Cy Young the Greg Maddux

Rocket-1
The NHL Awards are probably the most boring show ever. It was very nice to see "Le Gros Bill" win an award though, he's the man, the myth, the legend. When you look up the definition of class in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Jean Beliveau. Kubby31
The NHL Awards are probably the most boring show ever. Can't argue with that friend. And some say that the all-star game has no zip to it,this awards show beats that by miles.
leafs_rock_go_mccabe
The guy from Cirque du Soleil should buy the Montreal Canadiens and then they should hold the darn awards show in Montreal. Now THAT would be something else to watch!

blackbarbie11
Not sure about re-naming some of the trophies, but I did enjoy the NHL Awards last night. Of course I have to send out a special congradulations to my Nashville Predator Steve Sullivan for winning the Masterton Award. I enjoyed the show, and I also enjoyed the performance by Chaka Kahn. I think all of the European players have the cutest accents especially Malkin. Oh and I think the French-Canadian players have cute accents to. I love the French language, even though I can only speak a little.

Did you notice the size difference between him & Ovie, when they were on stage together. Man,he's a big boy. And ovie is no midget

It would have been cool to have some sort of show in between the awards and have the presenters..you know actually know their lines. I hate to see all those Bruins win those awards especially Chara but was happy for Ovechkin OVIE OVIE!!!. Beliveau was the highlight of the show for me he truly is a great man.
